Abstract

This study is the most important component in establishing the court library as the best legal library in Korea responsible for professional legal services. A perception survey was conducted on the target. As a result, first, looking at the collection direction based on the needs of general users, in the case of collection types, preference in the order of books, electronic materials, and non-books should be considered. It seems to be necessary to plan a collection development policy reflecting the high preference for books. In addition, in the non-books section, the preference for non-book materials in the form of video rather than audio is much higher, and in the case of language, domestic books should be collected mainly. Second, looking at the collection direction based on the needs of experts, the satisfaction of experts is generally low, so it seems that a collection development policy should be established to improve this. As for the type of information source, preference was shown in the order of electronic materials, books, and non-books. There is a need. The future collection direction should be based on the preference shown in the order of procedural law, specialized field, basic substantive law, and legal series. Also, when collecting the same book, electronic form of legal data should be considered rather than printed. In addition, it is necessary to collect collections mainly from domestic books, and then, it is expected that the scope of collection should be expanded to prioritize English and American books, Japanese books, and German books.

Abstract

Today, with countless health information being accessible through online and offline, the public has been able to explore health-related information in various ways. The current study focuses on the information-seeking behavior of the mothers who actively explore information related to the health of their healthy infants (aged between 0 and 3 years). The researcher had conducted in-depth interviews of 24 American, Korean, and Korean immigrant mothers living in the United States, and then analyzed the sequential order of the information sources that they have used to search for the health-related information about their children. The current research highlights that the mothers' information-seeking pathways and searched topics tended to differ in accordance with their child(ren)'s health conditions (e.g., ill vs. healthy). For instance, regarding the information sources used, more diverse health information sources (e.g., public libraries, government health agencies, daycare teachers) were used when their child(ren) was not ill. In addition, when a child was ill, mothers were likely to focus on information about specific diseases or symptoms first, whereas when the child was healthy, they used to explore information on various health topics such as growth and development, nutrition and diets, parenting, and so on. Based on the results, implications for the information professionals are discussed when designing and providing health-related information services to mothers of healthy infants and toddlers.

Abstract

Based on the analysis of the NDL authority system, this study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of subject authorities related to Korea in the NDL. The results are as follows. First, NDL subject authorities related to Korea are 3,143 in total including 2,205 headings and 938 subdivisions. Among them, social sciences accounted for more than half with 52.4%, and economics by individual discipline accounted for the most with 552 cases, 17.6%. Second, most of the subject headings of historical events caused by or directly related to Japan are described from the Japanese perspective, and terms familiar to Korea are mainly described in reference, not in heading. Third, subject headings representing Korean characteristics or historical events are considerably lacking or nondescript. Forth, when referring the name of the country, the term 'Joseon (朝鮮)' continues to be used to refer to both South and North Korea; however, it is necessary to subdivide the history after 1948 which includes the era of the 'Republic of Korea' and the 'Democratic People's Republic of Korea'. Using the term Joseon to refer North and South Korea may cause the reader to perceive Korea as persisting in the Joseon Dynasty. Furthermore, while 'Balhae (渤海)' is regarded as Chinese history, it is a part of Korean history and should be added to the Korean historical periods.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of podcast-produced reading activity programs on reading attitudes and communication skills of high-grade elementary school students. To that end, 20 fifth and sixth graders applied for a reading culture program conducted at N Public Library located in Seoul, Korea, were assigned as experimental and control groups. The total research period is from 8 October 2018 to 11 February 2019. and the class was conducted once a week for 90 minutes, six times for each group, and a total of 12 sessions. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; First, it was found that the reading activity program produced by podcast had a positive effect in all four areas: value domain, motivation·interest domain, habit·attitude, and expectation domain in the reading attitude of high-grade in elementary school. Second, communication skills were found to have a positive effect in all seven sub-areas, such as information collection and listening, overcoming stereotyped thinking, creative communication, self-disclosure, leading communication, and understanding of others' perspectives. In conclusion, the podcast-produced reading activity program had a positive effect on the reading attitude, communication ability, and media ability of high-grade in elementary school, suggesting that it is effective in applying various educational fields.

Abstract

Recently, several literary centers have been established and operated to professionally collect, preserve, manage, and utilize literature-related materials at domestic and foreign, the National Museum of Korean Literature will be opened for the first time in 2024. In this paper, at the time of opening the National Literary Museum, the current status and characteristics of the overall service of the National Literary Museum were reviewed based on prior research and advanced cases. For the case analysis, a total of 11 institutions were selected among national literary museums abroad and the status of each institution was analyzed according to the service elements provided, such as operational purpose and major services, exhibition services, library and archive services, educational programs and event services, research and publication services, and other convenience facilities services. Based on the research results, we explored implications that can be applied to the National Literary Museum in Korea, and cultural institutions such as libraries, museums and archives collaborated to discuss a comprehensive service direction to operate the National Literary Museum as a single complex cultural space. In order for the National Museum of Korean Literature to become a literary institution representing the country, it will be important to efficiently service literary resources by maximizing the unique characteristics of Korean literature through cooperation with other cultural institutions.

Abstract

This study tried to suggest the revitalization plans for specialized libraries by referring to various issues regarding specialized libraries in the sense that the issue of specialized libraries can soon become an opportunity for the development of specialized libraries. Through literature analysis, problems and issues related to specialized libraries were derived, and the perception of librarians was investigated through surveys. The policy directions presented based on the results are as follows. First, the 'Library Development Plan' should strengthen the part related to the specialized library development plan. Second, topic maps for specialized libraries in Korea are needed.(Second, the topic map for specialized libraries in Korea is needed.) Third, it is also necessary to operate to configure multiple councils based on the distinction between the specialized library. Fourth, an analysis of the duties of specialized library librarians should be made. Fifth, professional information services that specialized libraries can perform need to be developed. Sixth, among the information resources owned by specialized libraries, it is necessary to find ways to establish and jointly utilize information resources that are valuable and shareable as national resources. Seventh, specialized libraries should allow every library to participate in library evaluation, and make improvement plans for specialized libraries based on the collected data. Eighth, it is also necessary to publish a collection of best practices for specialized libraries.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the service quality of special libraries using Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) method. This study also applied the working year factor to IPA model for establishing more improved library service strategies. A total 127 library users who work in governmental policy or research institutions in South Korea participated in this study. This study conducted regression analysis to compare with the results of IPA. The results of survey revealed that special library users had high expectation for library services, but they perceived the performance of the library service as insufficient. Special library users assessed that the information services of libraries were well provided but required additional efforts in services related with space and provided by librarian. Interestingly, when the library services were measured by working years, special library users who have worked for more than eight years were generally satisfied with library services with no "possible overkill" services, but users with less than three years working experience particularly expressed dissatisfaction with the service provided by librarians. The results of regression analysis supported the results of IPA. Finally, this study provides several important suggestions for better special library service.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze priorities of competencies and to find the direction of development of teacher librarian training and retraining program. A total of 238 subjects were used for the final analysis. They were analayzed using IPA, Borich's needs analysis and the Locus for Focus model. As a result, First, teacher librarians perceived that the importance and performance of teacher and manager competency were higher than information specialist and cooperative leader. Second, they needed competencies of data-science, coding, Internet of Things in the field of information specialist as changing educational environment. Third, they needed competencies of information ethics, copyright instruction, and digital and media literacy education in the field of teacher. Fourth, they needed competencies of facility designing for future education, online and offline school library marketing skills, and establishment of makerspaces and learning commons in the field of ibrary manager. Fifth, they needed competencies of library based instruction, library cooperative instruction, and building a collection related to subject in the field of cooperative leader. Sixth, the highest required competency for teacher librarians was suggested for teacher librarians' role area.

Abstract

This study analyzed experimental studies of intervention programs provided to improve reading comprehension of elementary school students using a systematic review research method. Cochrane's handbook was applied, and key questions were formulated according to the PICOTS-SD. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to 1,610 papers searched in KCI, and the final 18 cases were selected for analysis. The risk of bias was evaluated using the 'RevMan5' tool provided by Cochrane. As a result of the evaluation, the risk of bias was low in most areas. And for the qualitative analysis of these papers, a data summary table was prepared. As a result, the types of intervention programs were diverse, and in many cases, upper grade students were applied. The size of the experimental group ranged from 6 to 29, and there were more QED-based studies than RCT-based studies. The most mediation time was 40 minutes, and the number of mediation sessions was 8 to 24. And in all studies, the intervention programs were found to be effective in improving reading comprehension.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the problems of describing bibliographic elements such as edition, impression, and year of publication in the current Cataloging Rules, and to present improvements to the KCR and the KORMARC Format. According to changes in the information technology environment in the library, the level and scope of the cataloging that can be provided to users should be adjusted. As data is diversified and descriptive method of metadata develops, the development of bibliographic elements and the change of the descriptive method are changing the framework of the existing standardization. As a research method, we will examine the concept of edition and impression, examine the transition process of description of edition and impression targeting KCR. And we would like to present the methods of bibliographic description to be added or modified through cataloging examples, and examine the format reflected in KORMARC. This study is intended to be limited to the descriptive form of books. The bibliographic elements of the entry in the library must be fully consistent with the bibliographic elements of the material to be catalogued. This study suggests an improvement to the cataloging rules. First, the edition of the cataloging rules shall describe the edition statement and the impression statement. In addition, the description of the year of publication describes the latest year, not the first year of publication of the edition of the material to be catalogued. The descriptive scope of the year of publication is extended to the month of publication. Second, in the KORMARC format, the description of impression in edition statement is given to the identifier in the 250 field, and is numerically described as the second impression. When presenting the month and year of publication, one identifier in the field 260 describes the year of publication and the other identifier describes the month of publication. The description for the month and year of publication is stated the latest month and year on the title page and the colophon of the publication.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the usage behaviors of university students seeking and sharing everyday life information through an online community called Everytime. The study was designed based on everyday life information-seeking and activity theory models, and students from various universities were interviewed using a qualitative research method. Findings showed that Everytime users perceive Everytime as a valuable online community for pursuing and sharing everyday life information. It was primarily used to search for university life information, such as academic calendar, class, and graduation, and health, restaurants, and housing. In the case of the freshmen and sophomores who entered during the COVID-19 pandemic, their dependence on Everytime was high, and juniors and seniors who experienced university life before COVID-19 also responded that Everytime is one of the essential sources of information in university life. Although Everytime provides quick and valuable information, users mentioned the moral hazard as a major factor hindering the active use of Everytime. The results of this study are expected to be used as primary data for informatics research on the online community of college students and the development and operation of online communities for university students.

Abstract

Due to COVID-19, user instruction programs could not be conducted face-to-face, and the sessions have been moved online. The present study attempted to investigate how online user instruction influences the information literacy ability of college students. The study randomly selected college students (N=50) who completed online user instruction sessions and college college students (N=50) who did not complete them among freshment who went to to college in 2020 to measure their information literacy abilities. For this study, a tool for measuring information literacy abilities was developed by referring to several previous studies. The measurement results were analyzed by the independent samples t-test, and significant differences were found between students who completed online user instruction sessions and those who did not. The findings of the study have confirmed that it is effective in enhancing library users' information literacy abilities to provide user instruction online under the COVID-19 situation, and even in post-COVID 19 times, which helps them appropriately utilize the characteristics of digital libraries. The information literacy measurement tool used in the present study was developed to evaluate online information literacy, and thus contributed to the extension of the literature of digital information literacy and user instruction. The present study provided practical implications for how academic libraries will promote information services to cope with environmental changes in which contact-free (untact) services are obliged.

Abstract

It is not easy for information users to find books that are suitable for them in a knowledge information society. There is a growing need for libraries to break away from traditional services and provide user-tailored recommendation services, but there are few qualitative studies on user satisfaction so far. In this study, a user-customized book recommendation was performed by applying Apriori, a correlation analysis algorithm, and satisfaction factors were analyzed in depth through interviews. The experimental data was the loan data of 100 people who used the most frequently used loan data for 10 years from 2009 to 2019 of the S library in Seoul. The interviewees of the experiment were those who could be interviewed in depth. After the correlation analysis, the concepts and categories derived by analyzing the interview data were 59 concepts, 6 sub-categories, and 2 upper categories, respectively. The upper categories were 'reading' and 'book recommendation service'. In the 'reading' category, there were 16 concepts of motivation for reading, 8 concepts of preferred books, and 12 concepts of expected effects. Also, in the category of 'reading recommendation service', there were 10 'reflection factors', 4 'reflection methods', and 9 'satisfaction factors'.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze AI research trends related to elementary, middle, and high school education. To this end, the related literature was collected from the SCOPUS database and the publication period of the collected literature was from 1974 to March 2021, with 154 journal papers and 571 conference papers. Research trends were analyzed based on the co-occurrences analysis technique of 4,521 words of author keyword and index keyword included in these papers. As a result of the analysis, big data, data mining, data science and deep learning were found as the latest research trends with machine learning and there was a difference between elementary, middle and high school education. It can be seen that elementary school had a lot of robot-related research, middle school had a lot of game and data-related research, and high school had various and in-depth research. In discussion, we mapped the top 50 words common to elementary, middle, and high schools with the 'Artificial Intelligence Basics' curriculum of Korean Government and '5 Big Ideas' of the United States Government so that AI research can be viewed at a glance.

Abstract

This study was performed in order to to suggest the library service direction and program provision method for single-person households in the Seoul Public Library. by analyzing the current status of the operation of public services and library services for domestic and foreign single-person households and the results of the survey on perception of library users and experts. As a result, the suggested library service direction for single-person households was proposed to secure and provide information resources closely related to the lives of single-person households, and establish a support center in charge of services to utilize human resources efficiently with local libraries, and create a user-centered facility infrastructure including single-person households away from the material-oriented library, provide regional specifications and customised services based on the characteristics and distribution of single-person households. In addition, the reading culture program for single-person households believes that social activities support for vulnerable single-person households, social ties, care, volunteer work, leisure and cultural activities are more necessary than anything else, and proposed specialized library services and programs for young, middle-aged, and female single-person households.

Abstract

The legal deposit is a comprehensive and systemic method for acquiring a country's publications. This study aims to compare laws and regulations about legal deposit among several countries that have different histories and traditions and to supplement laws and regulations of Korea's legal deposit. To do this, research papers and laws, regulations, guides, web sites and online systems about legal deposit of eight countries including USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Singapore, and Korea were reviewed. This study tried to compare and analyse several categories including publications to be deposited or not deposited, requirements, due dates, expenses, and numbers of copies for deposit, and penalty for noncompliance with legal deposit. Also, online publications to be deposited or not deposited, requirements and methods for deposit were compared and analysed. At last, some suggestions were also made for improvement in laws and regulations of <Library Law> in Korea.
