Abstract

In most countries the public library run as a public institution and a symbolic icon for a democratic society. Therefore public library's publicity is absolutely essential value and profit should not be made on their maintenance. More recently, as the government's budget spending increase, however, many local governments contract out to manage an entire library or new library system. Three main reasons could be identified. Firstly, alternative solutions for maintenance were supposed to save money. Secondly, contracting out provides an opportunity to improve the quality of service delivery. Thirdly, central government and some local authorities had very strong ideological reasons for contracting out of the public libraries. However, nothing proved that alternative maintenance had caused lower cost and better services in Korea. In this paper, the reasoning of a move from the traditional form of public library governance is discussed, as well as the advantages and disadvantages contracting out of the public libraries, and suggested various practical solutions in Korea.

Abstract

This paper tries to interpret the processes of small libraries changing sociological role and its direction of movement in Masan City. The roles of small libraries are changing according to the aspects of the communities. Thus the roles of the small libraries in Masan have also changed with the various changes in Korean society. The periods are divided into three : 1980's : the appearances of civil libraries, 1990's : maeul libraries that the citizens have established and participated, 2000's : small libraries that have established from cooperation of government and private. By the three periods this paper interprets the processes of small libraries changing sociological role and its direction of movement in Masan City.

Abstract

This study attempts to analyse factors that influence the level of career decision for prospective librarians. To this end, an empirical study was conducted on the students from the department of Library & Information Science at universities located in Seoul, Gyeong Gi and Chung Cheong Areas. Exogenous variables included curriculum, career-related departmental activities, and librarian-related institutional factors. The result of analysis using the Structural Equation Model reveals that career-related departmental activities are preceding factors which affect the level of career decision and that personality types function as a modulator. This suggests that, in order to raise the career decision level, prospective librarians need to participate in career-related departmental activities, which make it easier to share information regarding career and thus enhance the level of career. Such career-related departmental activities include participating in job-oriented circles and career-consulting programs, communicating with seniors, and operating and joining career programs. Further organizational and institutional development is required : better curriculum, improved practical ability and qualifications as librarians. This study also discusses its limits and areas for future research.

Abstract

The purpose of this research are to develop patterns for integrated culture and arts education program in libraries. In order to conduct the research, I analyzed the status of the culture and arts education programs in domestic and U.S. libraries. The basic aim of the culture and arts education program in libraries is based on a nature of the library. I presented the patterns of a integrated culture and arts education programs (experience-understanding-communication). Also, I presented a various culture and arts education programs in based cultural facilities of a region.

Abstract

As the foundation of the National Digital Library(NDL) by the National Library of Korea is in progress, there has been an increasing interest in developing a policy for its successful operations. Although the research and support related to building domestic library policies have been limited so far, it is an important ongoing problem to develop and improve systematic and detailed policies for information services of digital libraries in order for them to continuously advance in a rapidly changing information environment along with various issues. Therefore, through a thorough review of the literature and overseas cases related to the development of digital library policies, this research aims to provide a new direction for establishing service policies of domestic digital libraries including the NDL by extracting its critical factors and issues.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the character types and job satisfaction of the college university librarians by using the Enneagram personality analysis tools. The study of the job satisfaction still remains as a permanent research subject in the actual field because it is directly related with library service. Furthermore, this study intends to develop the desirable professional skills of the librarians through presenting the distinctive characters that can increase the job satisfaction. It will also provide the basic materials for educating the librarians with man-power development program which can also include the distinctive characters.

Much of the current literature on reading instruction supports the idea of teaching students a series of reading strategies instead of isolated reading skills. Reading strategies are plans or methods that can be used or taught to facilitate reading proficiency. In the meantime, the reading instruction program of school library is the reading promotion event has been limited. Therefore, the reading instruction program of school library need to focus reading strategies oriented instruction rather than reading skill. This Study categorizes Reading Strategies that divided into text type, text structure, reading process, cognitive strategies.

Abstract

Through the present training condition of Korean teacher librarians and their supply-demand prospects, this paper pointed out problems both of the educational system and of its supply-demand and suggested the solution as well. Particularly, focusing on the educational system of teacher librarians and the present condition of the training organizations, this paper predicted their supply ability in the future and analyzed the demand which is necessary, when applying the standards of Korean Library Association and School Library Promotional Law with the selective situation of teacher librarians. In this way, the problems of supply-demand imbalance were indicated and, as a method for training the proper number which is required for the future demand, the rearrangement of the approval number of a course of study for the teaching profession and the establishment of Library and Information education department in education college were proposed.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the qualities for the reading education professionals and to suggest a training program of reading education professionals through comparing our educational programs for training of reading education professionals with those of U.S and Japan. The training program of reading education professionals in U.S is composed of Pedagogy and English language subjects and it emphasizes on literacy instruction. However, in Japan they make much account of the academic system of reading education and emphasize on various reading activities and the neighboring knowledge related with reading education. In our country, the program is composed with Korean language subjects concentrated on reading and comprehension. The training program of reading education professionals should consider three factors of reading such as readers, reading materials and reading professionals. It should include theory and philosophy and emphasize on educational experience and practice. It also should cover the neighboring knowledge related with reading education.

The aim of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of bibliotherapy program for university students. Bibliotherapy program was designed and apply to crash course of 'Library Science' at Graduate School of Library, Archive & Information Studies in Pusan National University for fall semester 2006. A evaluation way of bibliotherapy program was a self-evaluation method for 5 cases of 39 university students participated in bibliotherapy program with examining of self-identity. The results have two obtains. 1) This program has a effectiveness in change of inner world. 2) Bibliotherapy program has a effectiveness in establishing ego-identity of university students.

Abstract

‘One Book One City' project is regarded as one of the most successful reading promotion campaign conducted by public libraries in this age. The purpose of this research is to analyze the present stage of this campaign in Korea, and to suggest the actual plans to make this campaign successful. To look into deep context and process of this campaign in Korea, I did a case study for ‘One Book One Busan’ project. After analyzing the strength and weakness of the project, I suggested the strategies for the development of ‘One Book One City' campaigns in Korea.

This research purpose to investigate aspect of reading movement and readers' interest in the period of 2000’s, This is succession research that is the Japanese Occupation Period, after release, the 1950s, the 1960s, the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s. Through such series, namly, reading phenomenon analyzing comparison, is to find present address of reading popularization movement and reading education. In main discourse, First, investigated reading movement, in the period of 2000’s(1. the reading movement of library and public institution, 2. the reading movement of bookstore and medium, and several organization's, 3. student reading movement and school reading education). Second, readers' interest observed in the period of 2000’s.(1. ordinary readers' interest, 2. student readers' interest). If we correct judgment about reading phenomenon from now. It will be foundation that unfold reading education more effectively.

Abstract

This study examined the historical background and structural characteristics of the UDC(Universal Decimal Classification) standard edition which has been created from the entire content of the Master Reference File database. We made a comparison of the structural characteristics between UDC standard edition and Korean abridged edition. UDC is a hybrid of two kinds of documentary classification scheme, that is enumerative and analytico-synthetic, and its structure reflects this feature. It is found that UDC standard edition extended the universality and synthetic method using its auxiliary tables compare to Korean abridged edition.

Abstract

This study tries to compare the classification systems of major internet portals and their sub-portals specialized for the children and of major online book stores. It compares and analyzes the major directories of them and suggests recommendations not only to improve their own systems but also to apply to the development for the classification systems for children's library. Some of them are: ① The system should reflect information requests and use behaviors of the children netizen. ② It should select the terms reflecting the children's viewpoints and expressions and suggest the guidelines by ages. ③ It should maintain the clear hierarchies and grouping for the accessability and convenience of the users. ④ It will be helpful to establish the categories to mix the subject- or concept-based categories and the activities and objects of the children. ⑤ It will also be helpful to establish the categories based on the curricula added by those creating the imagination and interest and to subdivide by subject.

Abstract

This study investigated the general problems concerning the subject Computer Science in the KDC(Korean Decimal Classification) 4th edition based on the comparative analysis with DDC, NDC, Disciplinary Classification System of Korean Research Foundation and National Standard Science and Technology Classification and Science and Technology Classification of Korea Science and Engineering Foundation, and suggested some ideas for the improvements of them. The subject of Computer science in the KDC 4th edition will be helpful to be improved to integrate in classes 004-005 now separated into two main classes of 000(004-005) and 500(566) in KDC4, to systematize subdivisions, to add new subjects, to delete and relocate some inappropriate subjects and to add notes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is investigate to compare with knowledge classification and library classification system of botany. First, the knowledge field of botany is mainly classified in morphology, physiology, ecology, taxonomy, genetics, evolution and others by the study object of plants. Second, the division of plants is treated in the field of taxonomy, that is, a lower subdivision study of botany, and Engler's classification is still prevalent in the taxonomy. Third, in library classification, KDC, NDC, UDC and CC adopted the Engler's classification, but DDC and LCC was taken of the Bentham & Hooker's classification. In the Engler's classification, plants are arranged by evolution's order, from lower vegetation to higher vegetation, but Bentham & Hooker's classification is arranged in the reverse order. Forth, it is desirable that every plants(482-489) of KDC' botany are subdivided by the attribute or structure of plants being treated in the general botany as if they are subdivided in the DDC or CC.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out user`s information needs in university libraries based on websites. The data were collected from the bulletin board in university libraries websites. To identify the user`s information needs, the works in the university libraries including acquisition, cataloging, circulation, digital collection and electronic system were analyzed. The results of the study will be useful for designing and developing the library system.

Today, the importance of library services for children is well acknowledged by many. The children’s rooms of the public library in addition to the children’s library must be the place where the community’s young ones grow up and learn to give back to their society. Also, the libraries are a life-long source of education. However, not all of the public libraries in our country have librarians specialized in children and young adults. The lack of specialized librarians prevents the public libraries from keeping up with the rapid change of society, which in turn prevents the libraries from meeting children’s needs for information, culture, and recreation. The purpose of this research has two goals in mind. The first objective is to find out how to effectively build cooperative networks that will help the children’s librarians of both public and children’s libraries to better serve the children. The second objective is to solve any problems the librarians may encounter while serving the children by studying the formal and informal contents of the cooperative networks, and identifying which areas are in need of these cooperative networks.

Abstract

This study deals with problems of acquisition of multicultural materials published in many countries where immigrants living in Korea came from. Until these days, libraries that want to support immigrant community in S. Korea have had many difficulties in acquiring those materials because they used informal acquisition methods and mother countries of the immigrants in Korea have lower quantities and quality of book production and distribution system than developed countries. Through literature review and interviews, some recommendations are suggested : utilizing domestic vendors or book jobbers, contacting online bookstores, publishers and local bookstores in mother countries of the immigrants in Korea, attending international book fairs held in different Asian countries and taking buying trips for multicultural materials and connecting organizations and people related with multicultural materials. This study gives some benefits to libraries that are developing area studies, language and literature collection as well as libraries that are developing multicultural collection.

Abstract

The purpose of this experimental study is to analyze the techniques of producing the traditional Korean ink sticks, in order to restore them. The major findings are as follows: (1) Korean traditional ink is a name which people generically calls a block of ink mass made from soots and pine pitch, and it can be classified into pine-pitch ink and oil-pitch ink according to the type of soot. (2) Pine-pitch ink is made from soot of burnt pine trees, and oil-pitch ink is made from soot of burnt plant, animal or mineral oil. Both are mixed with glue made from resin, and hardened into block form. (3) Raw materials of ink include soot, glue made from resin, and spices, and the techniques of making Korean traditional inks were documented in <Gosa Chwaryo> etc. (4) The techniques of making Korean traditional inks have not been handed down, but some craftsmen in modern Korea have restored those traditional techniques.
