본 연구는 공공도서관의 효율적인 갤러리 설치․운영 방안을 모색하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구를 위해 문헌 및 현장 사례 조사, 인터뷰 방법을 사용하였다. 국내 12개 지자체의 15개, 해외 3개국 11개 도시의 11개 공공도서관 갤러리를 조사․분석하였다. 국내 갤러리 운영 관계자 등 22명을 인터뷰하였고, 이 중 21명(95.5%)이 공공도서관의 갤러리 운영이 필요하다고 하였다. 효율적인 갤러리 운영을 위해 다음과 같이 제안한다. 첫째, 도서관의 상황에 따라 큐레이터를 배치한다. 둘째, 최소한 55㎡ 이상 규모의 갤러리를 설치한다. 셋째, 적절한 규모의 예산을 편성한다. 넷째, 가급적 외부 전문가의 심사에 따라 갤러리 대관 요청을 심사하고 공간을 시민들에게 무료로 대관한다. 다섯째, 운영 매뉴얼 및 규정을 만들어 활용한다. 여섯째, 갤러리는 도서관이 직접 운영한다.

Abstract
This study aims to find an efficient establishment and operation of a gallery in public libraries. A literature review, field case study, and interview method were used. 15 public library galleries in 5 regions in Korea and 11 public library galleries in 11 cities in 3 countries were examined. 22 people were interviewed and 21 (95.5%) of them claimed that a gallery needs to be operated in a public library. The result of the analysis proposes the followings for an efficient establishment and operation of a gallery in public libraries: firstly, employing an art gallery curator according to the library’s situation. Secondly, establishing a gallery of at least 55㎡ in size. Thirdly, allocating an appropriate budget. Fourthly, if possible, gallery rental requests are reviewed by external experts and a gallery needs to be rented out to the public free of charge. Fifthly, having an operating manual or a regulation. Sixthly, a gallery should be operated directly by the library.
