The KDC is the most widely used classification system in the elementary school libraries of Korea, but it is only published in full edition. This study is to development abridged KDC edition for elementary school libraries as the subject of KDC. In order to do this, the present writer carried out as follows; to analyse the present state of an class in KDC, to analyse a distribution chart of a class in an practical books and to comes up with a plan of abridged KDC edition as the grounding in the foundation of volume a collection of books. The abridged edition for elementary school libraries is a structural hierarchy of the corresponding full edition which it is based, and is intended for general collections of 20,000 titles or less.
LAI(Library Assited Instruction) distinguished from classroom instruction viewpoint of use of school libraries's material and collaborative with teacher librarian. Thus LAI must be emphasized student's information activities and teacher librarian's support activities. This study is supposed to LAI model (information presentation-guide type, information search-organization type, information analysis- interpretation type, information synthesis-representation type, information query-projects type, information query-discussion type) based on student's information activities. The student's information activities were derived from the model of information use process. The Model of proposed LAI is constructed the role of classroom teacher, teacher librarian, student and the process of LAI process.
Recommended book lists make ‘a good book' known and help choose the books. Currently, the recommended book lists published by various institutions are primarily used as the selection tool for choosing children's and young adults' book in many libraries and schools. Considering this reality, I examined the present production condition of the recommended book lists and evaluated whether they were suitable as a selection tool. Afterwards, I suggested the development methods about how the recommended book lists will be developed for them to function as a selection tool.
The objective of this study is to analyse the current status and problems of the junior college libraries in Korea which is being placed in the inferior environment relatively and to present the improvement program against hereupon. The concept and an objective of the junior colleges were examined, the problems against an external environment through various statistics of their academic libraries were also presented. The instance academic libraries based on their number of book collection in the city of Taegu area were selected to prepare the improvement program. Information service instance which hits to the junior colleges were collected through analysing the web site of the corresponding library, and the depth interview to the corresponding junior college librarians was also executed.
According to the 7th education curriculum and advent of information society, people expect the school library to do various things. Based on an evaluation model of education policy, the policy process of the school library was divided into an agenda setting, policy making and policy implementation. Then I developed a method of evaluation from an administrative and political point of view. Using this, I analyzed problems with school library policy and I categorized them. I suggested better solutions for improving the school library policy.
This study intends to analyze the integrated search methods in digital libraries environment. To categorize various integration methods, I investigated the developmental properties and integration types of digital libraries from a users point of view. And then, I reviewed the current best practices of library portal which are JISC Information Environment, NSDL OCKHAM and Korea Knowledge Portal initiatives. Nextly, I derived the two methods of integrated search mechanisms such as aggregated search and distributed search that is useful in the digital libraries environment.
Motivated by the open access movement, research institutions are building institutional repositories for a nation-wide knowledge distribution infrastructure. IKIS(Institute Knowledge Inventory System) was proposed to integrate materials produced by government-sponsored 23 institutions of the economic, social and human fields, to contribute for policy-making in national agenda and to proffer services to a people. As IKIS project goes on, the project turns out to be slower than planned especially in terms of building up content and improving system functions. This study aims to investigate the methods for promoting the system in terms of management and system developments using multiple research methods such as surveys and interviews. Five issues including budgets and marketing are proposed for the management strategies, whereas three ones including content and system performance improvements are suggested for the system development. The study results can be utilized as guidelines for managing university and school repositories as well as IKIS.
The study investigated the continuing education program desirable for the academic librarian under digital circumstances. For this purpose the study investigated the education programs provided by the National Library of Korea, the American Library Association, and the Association of Research Libraries, and also undertook a questionnaire survey of academic librarians in Korea. As a result the study suggested user instruction, information retrieval, electronic licensing etc. as programs needed most by the academic librarians. And also suggested intellectual freedom, disaster planning, cooperation with faculty, presentation and teaching skill as desirable to be included in the continuing education program.
This paper deals with the definition, function and type of ontology based on precedent study. Particularly the paper describes a Using Methods for OWL vocabulary and syntactics to Ontology Automatic Construction. Also for easily learning the usage methods for OWL vocabulary and syntactics, it introduces a detailed definition for syntactics of Class, Property, Class relativeness, Property relativeness and presents a sample data and explanation based on Wine Ontology which have constructed.
This study aims to perform an evaluation of web-based encyclopedia services provided by major Korean search portals, Naver, Yahoo-Korea, Empas, and Daum. These encyclopedia services are evaluated in terms of the relevance, up-to-dateness, and multimedia features of search results. In conducting this study, real queries that real users submitted were used. This study also compares functional characteristics of these encyclopedia services. The results of this study can be implemented to the development and improvement of portal's encyclopedia services. Users can refer to the results of this study in choosing encyclopedia services from search portals.
This study intends to make a comprehensive inquiry about the theoretical foundations of cataloging outsourcing. To the end, this study examined (1) backgrounds of cataloging outsourcing, (2) the pros and cons of cataloging outsourcing, (3) theoretical justification suggested by guardians of cataloging outsourcing, and (4) methodological limitations found in literatures on the subject. On the basis of it, finally suggested are methodologies for evaluating ‘effectiveness' of cataloging outsourcing.
This study was investigated to the geography services and geographical directories through Internet in order to develop a geographical directory. Research method was the examination of different type of geography services through internet and geographical directories on the Internet search engines. The results show principles for a geographical directory construction: use both geographical names and subject names on the initial directory screen, repeated use the names through directory hierarchy, locality use on bottom directory as a geographical name, and fit use of the number of directories.
Recently, a digital divide has gotten worse in the information age. So LG Sangnam library developed the ubiquitous library for the improvement of information accessability of the blind. It utilizes a mobile phone applied with NFC(Near Field Communication) technology and automates a user's identification process and serve library services at anytime from anywhere. Users can use three access points of a web service, a mobile service and a telephone library service. As a conclusion of this paper, Several recommendations were proposed. For the development of ubiquitous library, various instruments should be considered to diversify user's access points and a usability test and analysis about user's environmental context should be done simultaneously.
The goal of this study is to investigate and analyse the status quo of the HANGEUL publications, and management of the HANGEUL information resources in Kazakhstan and Uzebekistan of the Central Asia. Documents analysis, and direct observation and interviews were used as research methods. This paper consists of as follows : setting up a goal of construction, defining and developing the HANGEUL information resources produced and collected by the Korean in Kazakhstan and Uzebekistan, and analysing information resources management, and a conclusion and suggestion.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of OPAC displays of three children's libraries in Korea: Seoul Children's Library, Cheongju Miracle Library, and Yongsan Public Library. 'OPAC Display Guidelines(Draft)' published by IFLA is used to examine the details of OPAC displays, and to suggest their improvement. Discussed are such topics as the features of basic and detailed search screens, the brief display of search results, the arrangement and full display of bibliographic records, and the use of terms and labels. All three libraries offer their users the same KOLAS' OPAC, only designed to serve general users rather than children, i.e., their primary user group. They show some weakness, and much improvement is urgently required to satisfy specifically the needs and information seeking behavior of children.
Faced with the establishment of Korean Law School which aims to educate the qualified lawyer to provide the high quality of legal service professionally and efficiently to the people with complicated legal problems, this study analysed the basic approval standards for Korean Law School Library which is described in the bill as a integral part of law school for effective legal education.
This study has been conducted in preparation for a library instruction program for the Sangmyung University Library. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of different types of library instruction in improving the information literacy of users. 112 questionnaires were measured and analyzed using SAS and t-test, ANOVA among other statistical techniques. The results were as follows: (1) Library instruction directly affects the information literacy of users. After taking library instruction, users were able to effectively use the AtoZ service, related Sites service, thesis service, E-resources, DDS service, off-campus service, translation system and the e-book service through the library homepage. (2) Group instruction proved to be the most effective type of library instruction while online instruction was the worst.
