Abstract

For over 60 years, public libraries in Korea has made an essential contribution to the social, educational, cultural well-being of local communities throughout the country. In spite of these contributions, the public library is regarded as being in crisis. If the current crisis is serious situation, the library and librarian should seek ways to overcome the such crisis. The aim of the paper is to analyse the various factors of the current crisis through an fish-bone diagram and to suggest the solutions to overcome the crisis.

Abstract

In this research the current situations of libraries of 119 rural elementary schools are examined. These schools are the applicants for the ‘Campaign for Libraries for Rural Schools’ sponsored by Chosun Ilbo in 2009. Through the content analysis of their applications, the factors of facilities, collection, and environment are described. One the surface, most of these applicants look fine with the current size of collection and annual additions. They, however, commonly document the extremely poor conditions of facilities, unbalanced and low quality of books, lack of financial support, and cultural isolation. Even though they are not the typical rural school libraries, it seems urgent to improve their inferior conditions that any library statistics never shows in numbers. In this research, it is considered significant to make local governments and offices of education change their attitude toward rural school libraries and increase their financial support to them. The suggestions are as follows: First, let them know that school library policies concern the voters in communities; Second, use the visibility of various authoritative library assessments and awards; Third, strengthen the qualitative aspect of library evaluations.

Abstract

These days, librarians working at university libraries have been suffering from uncertainty about their professional identity and their position stability by ever-changing circumstances. Therefore, librarians at university libraries have to adapt quickly to the informational and educational environment which are constantly changing. They have to alter their role to meet information needs of users and only then can boost their value to maintain their longstanding identity as an expert on information storage and access. The purpose of this study is to find factors which threaten the professional identity of librarians working at university libraries by analyzing the literature and phenomena and to research an effective counterplan to create conditions for librarians to take pride as professionals in stable circumstances.

Abstract

This study reviewed the library cooperation of the National Library of Korea and regional public libraries in Korea, and analyzed the actual condition and cooperation program of public libraries in Incheon. The results of this study proposed some directions to improve cooperation among public libraries in Incheon as follows: to strengthen infrastructure of local public libraries; to build up the position of regional representative library and set up effective management of library policy organization authorities; to resolve the problems derived from multiple administrations and harmonize communications among public libraries; to appoint and administer strongpoint libraries; to specialize local libraries concerning characteristics; to expand and improve the existing library cooperative programs such as shared purchasing, interlibrary loan, preservation, cooperation with small libraries etc.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop evaluation index for school library in order to find ways to continue the improvement of school library by examining deficient areas and developing necessary areas, in which almost every school have libraries as a result of school library promotion project for last five years. To fulfill this, the research analyzed 2009 evaluation of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism(MCST), policy research evaluation index of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology(MEST), BSC product index of school library from preceding research, school library evaluation standard of Korean Library Association (KLA), two-phased base plan and school library promotion law of school library promotion of the MEST and evaluation index of municipal/province education agency of MEST, and thereby developed 54 evaluation index from 8 areas. The research ultimately presents 48 evaluation index from 8 areas. Also, analysis result was first verified by school library experts to increase credibility of the evaluation standard of the research. Based on the result, second evaluation was done by school library faculty staff, and thus went through two-phased verification process.

Abstract

With the introduction of new teacher evaluation system, teacher librarians' evaluation indicators and questions were presented for the first time. The purpose of this study is to review the validity of current indicators and questions and to develop new one, based on it. The result is as follows : Current indicators mainly focus on the management of school library facility and collection, not on teacher librarians' educational activities and have the low validity to evaluate the expertise of teacher librarians. As a result, this study will suggest new evaluation indicators and questions to evaluate their expertise appropriately.

Abstract

A book index is a locater system that ordinarily connects a set of terms from a text of a book to the page where they occur in the book's text. The DDC Relative Index differs somewhat in both of this matters. Its terms refers to classification notations and their corresponding category statements as found in the schedule text rather than to page numbers. The index is the final equipment of a classification scheme. The index is of primary importance to any classification scheme. Therefore The purpose of this study is to analysis DDC Relative Index.

Abstract

This study discusses the meanings of nationality in information behaviour. In this study nationality was represented by citizenship and group personality(here, dependency) Surveys were conducted for data collection, and a questionnaire were completed by 331 participants(158 Korean students and 183 Japanese students). Simple frequency tests and chi-square tests were conducted to examine the proposed relation between citizenship and information behavior, that between dependency and information behavior. Also conducted was two-way ANOVA test to examine the relative significance of two independent variables(citizenship and dependency) in information behavior. The results of chi-square tests showed that both variables have statistically significant relationship with information behavior although the relationship was partially significant. And the results of ANOVA test showed that between the two variables, citizenship was more significant than dependency.

Abstract

The purpose of this study aims to present the base for the rational management of printed music as an important primary source of music materials. In this study, therefore, the selection and acquisition, organization, user services for the management of printed music are investigated. Then the present situation for management of printed music of university libraries in Daejeon and Chungnam are surveyed. Finally, the special issues to be considered in the management of printed music are presented.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to propose the functions of the School Library Support Center of the Ulsan Metropolitan City. The findings are based on the 2009 and 2010 statistics of the school libraries in the Ulsan Metropolitan City, and a questionnaire survey that was conducted for teacher librarians and the class teachers who manage their school libraries without a Library Science degree. The proposed tasks of the School Library Support Center fall into two categories: administrative and practical. Administrative tasks include assigning teacher librarians to schools, expanding library resources, and establishing an integrated supervision system for both school libraries and student reading programs. Practical tasks include developing educational programs, informing library program providers to school, and public relations programs about the Center's services.

Establishing public libraries is more convenient in new towns than in older cities. This is because public libraries can be established during the construction of new towns. This study examined how public libraries were built in B new town, which is one of the first new towns constructed in the capital region of Korea. B new town has problems that not even one public library was operated before the people moved to the B new town and that establishing public libraries was not finished when the construction of the new town was completed. The number of public libraries is not enough in B new town. In conclusion, there are many problems in establishing public libraries in B new town.

Applying one specific thesaurus might cause several problems because each thesaurus has its own characteristics inherited from its construction process. Therefore, integration of thesauri can be an appropriate approach to overcome the difficulties. This current research selected physics as a domain and two thesauri in the domain: PACS and PIRA. By integrating these two heterogeneous thesauri, this research could construct a conceptual structure that covers the whole concepts related to physics. By constructing the conceptual structure with the use of facet analysis from integrated thesaurus, it provides knowledge base with hierarchical structure and clear relationships between concepts. It can be an alternate approach to effective and efficient information retrieval and knowledge discovery.

Abstract

This study investigates the participants' perception and satisfaction score for culture and education programs operating in public libraries and culture & art centers in Daegu Metropolitan City. Attendees of the public libraries' programs have higher overall satisfaction, customer loyalty on the contents of the program and lecturers than those of the culture & art centers' programs. Attendees of the culture & art centers' programs rated staff supports and services, facilities and educational equipments higher than those in the public libraries' programs. This study calculates the LCSI score in public libraries(78.02) and culture & art centers(77.22).

Abstract

Regardless of age, ethnic group, status, public library service should be provided equally to everyone. However, people with disabilities have been recognized as a uncomfortable facility for public library. In this study was investigated and analyzed the library anxiety of public library handicapped users utilize K-LAS. As a result, Library anxiety is very differed according to sex, age categories, disability type, the frequency of library visit, purpose of visit, Especially, the factor on library staff and psychological․emotional factor was high.

Abstract

Colophon means an element to describe bibliographic areas of the concerned book on the specific space like a back of the title page or the last page of a book. Colophon functioned as an information source when cataloging in a library, an area concerning the copyright and as an useful information to readers. The publication of a new book has begun since early 1900s in Korea. And the element of the colophon is dependent on changes in the social and cultural environment. Among the element of the colophon early 1900s until now, the elements consistently appear on the title and the author, a place of publication, a publisher, the date of publication and the price. Additional the elements according to the change of social environment are the edition, ISBN, the registration of publisher, the address of publisher and an author career. On the other hand, omitted elements are the address of author, the account number and the seal. In the future, the size of the book is additionally wanted to describe in the colophon.

Abstract

This study was conducted to improve the classification schemes of KDC in the fields of motion picture materials. Classification schemes of the KDC, DDC and LCC for motion picture materials were analyzed and compared. From the results, KDC was found to be the least suitable classification system to handle motion picture materials because it had very poorly detailed subdivisions of items and incomplete subsidiary tables to develop some subject items to represent various aspects of motion picture fields. Some suggestions to cover the deficiencies of KDC for motion picture fields were made in terms of 9 subdivisions and 53 sub-items. Particularly, new subdivisions of ‘types of genre', ‘motion picture festival', ‘worldwide motion pictures' and ‘people related to motion pictures' were added.

Abstract

Bookmagic is a new reading program that encourages children of 5-15 ages to enjoy reading. Bookmagic provides free downloadable resources such as pre-reading and after-reading activities, booklists, posters and awards. Since a number of reading programs have already been developed, published and used, Bookmagic is not a toally new project. However, it is distinguished by the process of creating the program. While most of the reading programs available in Korea were developed by individual occupations(academic experts, private enterprises, civic organisations, associations of librarians or teachers), Bookmagic was designed by a team of various professionals including a picture book author, an academic researcher, a primary school teacher, a school librarian and two public librarians. Working in a partnership with other professionals, participant librarians had a unique opportunity to develop expertises on reading education as a creator of a program rather than as a deliverer.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factor that brings about information literacy gap by comparing and analyzing the group with high level and not so high level information literacy for migrant workers and to seek policy to clear the information literacy gap. To accomplish such purpose, the author found the operation of various factors that bring about information literacy gap through in-depth interview of migrant workers and working level NGO staff. The result of interview revealed that information literacy gap of migrant workers is generated by the complex operation of personal characteristics, technical factor, social and economical factor, government policy factor and so on.
