Most web portals provide a web directory service which selects and classifies web sites according to their subject matter. In order to investigate the directory access behavior of general Korean web users, this study analyzes directory access logs of NAVER, a major Korean web search engine. This study suggests a methodology to classify the total sessions into six different session types. This study also discusses directory access behaviors of the NAVER users by examining the distribution of sessions according to session types, the lengths of navigation within a session, and the most frequently visited categories. It is expected that this study could contribute to the development of more effective web directory services.

Abstract The Internet has rapidly become a global publishing platform, and electronic scholarly journals covering a wide range of subject areas are now available via WWW. The purpose of this study is to investigate the production and delivery of electronic scholarly journals between national information circulation institutions, the degree of overlap in services between these institutions, and the degree of differences in terms of the amount of electronic scholarly journals between subjects in science and technology(S&T) areas. For the study, Registered and Register-Candidate scholarly journals designated by Korea Research Foundation in S&T areas are used. This study also provided some considerations for the services of domestic electronic scholarly journals between national information circulation institutions.
Abstract Most university libraries in Korea have expanded the subscription of high-quality electronic resources in their amount and category, which are directly available to academic and research users via the web. Despite more than a decade's history, however, a lack of statistics made it difficult to get the overall pictures of electronic resources subscription status in Korea. The purpose of this study is to provide the analysis on nationwide statistics survey of how much money are spent on electronic resources, what kinds of subject resources are mainly subscribed, and how they are used and required by academic users, etc. Some comparisons are made with several factors that have effect on collection development of university libraries. This study will contribute to the future selection and subscription of electronic resources.
This study has compared the job performance of librarian director with that of non-librarian director, by making use of the public library evaluation research executed by Ministry of Culture & Tourism. The result was that the performance score of librarian director is much superior to that of non-librarian director. It is found that the more director's librarianship level is high, the more director's performance score is high. Moreover, it is confirmed a clear relationship between director's performance score and his librarianship level. And so it is evaluated that 'the Library and Reading Promotion Act' which regulates only a librarian to be a public library director is absolutely right.

Nowadays changes of financial environment are internalization, generalization and autonomous system. The most importance in a struggle for existence is to secure a customer. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether information on financial service accounts have fully offered over internet, which information consumers needed in buying financial service accounts and whether consumer have satisfied with offered information Through this, to enhance the efficiency of financial information offered to consumer over internet and to explore the consumer demanding information model by finding the problems of offering financial information. The specific purpose of this study are following; 1. to investigate the actual situation which consumers behaviour of information providing and choosing about financial accounts items on internet. 2. to analyze the relationship between the level of consumer information need about financial information and related variables. 3. to analyze the relationship between the level of consumer information satisfaction about financial information over internet and related variables. 4. to analyze the new information financial service and contents. 5. to analyze the informatic information and financial service accounts.
FRBR(Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) provides a structured conceptual model for relating the data which are recorded in bibliographic records to identify information resources. FRBR has 4 bibliographic entities - the work, expression, manifestation, and item - in its conceptual model. In this paper, the difference in the 'work' conception between FRBR and international standard numbers is examined. Consequently, the following points are observed:(1) The ISBN, ISSN, and ISMN identify manifestation level, as they refer to the physical expression of a work. The IARN, ISRC, and ISAN identify expression level, irrespective of its manifestation. The ISWC and ISTC identify work level - the unique artistic creation, whatever its expression or manifestation is. (2) ISWC and ISTC does not use the word 'work' in the same way as FRBR does. I think that the differences in meanings of the two usages 'work' come from the different positions to information resources.
The issue of the cataloging the electronic resources have been vigorously presented recently because of many problems involved in it. The study aims to examine the various formats of the electronic resources mainly centering around the internet as well as the need for cooperative cataloging of the resources. In addition, the study attempts to analyse the CORC of OCLC and the PCC of LC. Based on these, the cooperative cataloging system for online electronic resources in Korea is suggested.
To promote the efficiency of university library information service, the analysis of information-seeking behavior of information service users must be pre-examined. Under such assumption, this study made a survey of the information-seeking behavior of university faculty and students of five National Universities and the Universities of Education. This research found out the difference of behavior among main users when they sought the information, which was supplied by university libraries, and gave suggestion and advice for the improvement of the university library information service.

The purpose of this study was to develop a framework for predicting searching performance through an understanding of how cognitive ability relates to searching process and outcome. Specifically, this study examined the relationship between spatial visualization, logical reasoning, integrative reasoning, and information searching process and outcome. Information searching process was assessed by seven search process indicators: (1) search command selection; (2) combination of search commands; (3) application of Boolean logic; (4) application of truncation; (5) use of limit search function; (6) number of search statements; and (7) number of search errors made. Searching outcome was assessed by the number of correct answers to search questions. Subjects first took three standardized cognitive tests that measured cognitive abilities, and performed online catalog searching in response to seven information search questions. The searches were logged using Lotus ScreenCam, and reviewed for the analysis. Factor analysis was used to find underlying structures of the seven search process variables. Multiple regression analysis was applied to examine the predictive power of three cognitive variables on three extracted factors, and search outcome. Results of the data analysis showed that individual differences in logical reasoning could predict information searching process and outcome.
This paper suggests how to systemize administrative metadata required for managing intellectual property rights and their applications, which has been newly requested in digital library environment. For this purpose, firstly, the types of metadata required in digital libraries were identified. Secondly, this paper detected problems in MARC that digital libraries have been using as the tool for information organization. Finally, the structures of administrative metadata required by copyright laws were analyzed. On the basis of the researches above, this paper proposed how to systemize and operate administrative metadata that interlocks MARC, Dublin Core and administrative system of copyright trust agencies.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the cases of cooperation between school libraries and public libraries in order to reinforce their cooperation, and to prepare the base for development of school libraries. Data is collected through five workshops which attended school librarians, public librarians, and the peoples in the several regional offices of education. The results show three models of school and public library cooperation. School library - public library cooperation model is suited for metropolitan area where school library and public library are developed. Public library support model is suited for mid-size cities where school libraries are undeveloped. School library and public library integration model is suited for small towns where both school libraries and public libraries are undeveloped. These models, however, should be revised through testing several libraries and different situations
The role of scholarly journals in academic world is widely known and is recognized as the most important tool to improve the quality of scholarly communication. To do this, reasonable and legitimate evaluation methods are to be designed and to be applied. However, despite a lot of criticism regarding this issue, current journal evaluation policies have not drawn attention in related disciplines. In this regard, this paper attempts to shed light on some aspects related to the Korea Research Foundation‘s journal evaluation policy. Potential problems are particularly highlighted. It also addresses issues in using such data and tools in evaluating scholarly performance of researchers in academic institutions.
This study investigated the use of community information and communication technologies in light of its dual visions (i.e., serving as an affordable Internet service provider and a community building tool). Surveying the randomly selected users of a community network (n = 213), this study examined the influence of the community features on service use compared to that of Internet features. The present study found that the respondents were using the service mainly for general Internet features, such as email and web access. More than two-thirds of the respondents did not recognize community contents as available service. Community features of the service were found as significant predictors of use only among people who were aware of community contents but not among people who were not. Nonetheless, there was no difference in the amount of use between the two groups, indicating that the awareness of community contents itself did not increase use. Findings suggest that the service providers did not fully communicate the community aspect of the service with the users although the very aspect distinguishes the service from other Internet services.
