Abstract

Througout the literature, various opinions and recommendations are presented concerning educational backgrounds for subject specialist librarianship. However, the Korean library and information science education is designed as the college program, and so, utilization of either minor or double major programs is regarded as the best to produce qualified subject specialist librarians. Nevertheless, the courses in the library and information science should be promoted first. Accordingly, this study starts with the assumtion that the subject bibliography course in the library and information science is designed directly or indirectly to educate students as subject specialist librarians. For this, law and law firm library were explored as examples, and then, finally a law bibliography was provided for the training of the law specialist librarians.

This study examines overall user experience associated with Web search engine use including selection, usage of search features, evaluation. The data were collected through individual interviews with 28 faculty members and graduate students. It was found that users tend to select a search engine based on experience and knowledge of certain features and familiarity with an engine itself more than based on previous experience with search results. The results showed the users had mixed opinions regarding cross language retrieval while they did not believe the usage of operators effect the search results. It appears that users are interested in interface design as well as the accuracy of search results.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to extract metadata based on Dublin Core from national construction information DBs, to design XML schema from the extracted metadata, and to apply the previous works to integrated information retrieval system. To extract metadata, co-work was performed with librarians in the field of construction information, and, as a result, twelve metadata elements from Dublin Core and one administrative metadata could be extracted. Based on the investigation and analysis of those thirteen metadata elements, XML schema design process was described in detail. Finally, the service environments of integrated information retrieval system to which XML schema was applied was introduced. Further study was also provided.

Abstract

Recently, a great deal of corporations have adopted knowledge management system with eagerness to enhance the company competitiveness. However, since the main feature of knowledge management system is not just a simple information system but another entity creating intangible assets called “knowledge”, we need to develop a new approach to investigating the performance and acceptance of knowledge management systems from a perspective allowing knowledge-sensitive constructs. In this regard, we develop new constructs like knowledge schema and several knowledge circulation-related activities. As a research model, we adopt a famous technology acceptance model or TAM by Davis (1989), and extend it into incorporating knowledge schema. With the statistically valid and usable questionnaire survey data collected from 886 respondents in a big corporation typically using knowledge management system, we induced a robust result empirically, saying that knowledge schema and knowledge circulation activities are valid determinants of performance and acceptance of knowledge management systems.

Abstract

This paper estimates the relative efficiency of 29 university libraries in Seoul by data envelopment analysis. We employed library space, staff and book collection as inputs, and book circulation and reader visits as outputs. The result shows that average efficiency score is 0.5248 and only 3 libraries are efficient. Inefficiency is estimated to be 47.52%. Reorganization may be necessary in order to achieve greater efficiency.

Abstract

A public librarian is an occupation, which requires long-term, continuous training and difficult study to acquire and cultivate professional knowledge and skills. It is a necessity to achieve new knowledge, information and skills via appropriate retraining. A training system is the method which gives chances of retraining to public librarians. After examining some of the problems with the existing training system, it is apparent that the direction of training system needs to be decentralized. That is each local branch should be autonomous in terms of new training for librarians. For the method of training system, each autonomous unit would integrate the different theories to apply to the community-at-large and invite practical specialists from the local community to lecture. The training classes would be elective in that the each librarian could choose the classes he/she wants to take and give them credits for that, but the certificate for the class would also go towards completion for the required technical training. Finally, the utilization of cyber-education should be introduced, and the library association’s role strengthened, to help public librarians cultivate their specialties.
