Japanese colonial library policy was to interfere with the library activities by Korean leaders to enlighten Korean people as a form of independence movement, and through the government library to colonize Korean people into Japanese culture. This study investigates and analyzes the background of foundation and activities of the Taegu Burip Library which was officially founded first in Korea by Japanese colonial government. It tries to find the hided intention of the Japanese colonists to establish the libraries in Korea as a part of their colonial policy.
This study analyzes in detail the specific complaints of the dissatisfied public library users in Taegu Metropolitan city, with regard to materials, facilities, information services and staffs of the libraries. It also analyses the relatedness of complaining behaviors, complaints and demographic factors including gender, age, occupation, income, and education.
University library is more than just a collection. In other words, it is an access point and gateway to a world-wide information. Therefore, the evaluation of hybrid library and information services should be recognized an essential management activity. The goal of this study is to develope a new evaluation model for Korean university libraries, based on the analysis of existing models and perception level of the shakeholder groups. As result of statistical analysis, the study suggested six evaluation domains, thirty-seven indicators, and the relative importance (weight) and measure criterion.
As the role of a library has changed to the integrated management system of knowledge, the library needs new information retrieval tools. The purpose of this study is to propose a method and principle of the Korean-English semantic thesaurus construction for a knowledge management system. The method and principle is as follows; 1) in collecting terminology, I included not only internal documents but external documents on the web as a source for the descriptors extraction. 2) conceptual descriptors are more needed than semantic ones. I also proposed the necessity of the authority files for complement. 3) I proposed the appropriate scale of the descriptors to be 15,000 in a thesaurus. And 4) I proposed a hybrid method that used both a manual and an automatic process in establishing the relationship.
This paper reports on the development of an automatic book classification system using the faced classification principles of CC(Colon Classification). To conduct this study, some 670 words in the botanical field were selected, analyzed in terms [P], [M], [E], [S], [T] employed in CC 7, and included in a database for classification. The principle of an automatic classification system is to create classification numbers automatically through automatic subject recognition and processing of key words in titles through the facet combination method of CC. Particularly, a classification database was designed along with a matrix-principle specifying the subject field for each word, which can allow automatic subject recognition possible.
The purpose of school education and that of school library services are the same and the school librarians are expected to provide useful programs for the curriculum development. The effective operation of the school library need to be reformed in spite of various obstacles. If the primary school teachers perception and expectation on school librarians'roles are appropriate this will greatly motivate and mare active utilization of school library by the students. The purpose of this study are to survey the role of school librarian and to friend out the perception and expectation of primary school teachers on the school library services and finally to use its results for more efficient management of school library in teaching programs. It is conclude, base on the results, that they recognize the importance of school library and need to assign school librarians and also expect various services including school library education programs.
This study intends to 1)conform the possibility to transform the enumerated scheme into the faceted scheme, 2)review general theories on facet structure employed in DDC 780, and 3) analyze the facet structure of music. Findings are 1) The facet structure of DDC synthesize the standard subdivisions or specific facet indicators with basic facet. 2) facet indicator 0 is in use to indicate standard subdivision or general principle of music. and facet indicator 1 to general principles and musical forms. DDC has transformed the entire system into the facet structure through its revisions. Especially the music transformed into the facet structure employes the facet indicators and applies them to all the systems in music. But the notation have sometimes twofold meanings, and no ability to differentiate the meanings in the same notation.
This Study is Compared and analyzed for the curriculum of department of Library and Information Science of Junior college. Therefore curriculum of department Library and Information Science of Junior College in gradually changing forseed on conventional subject.
The purpose of this study lies in evaluating the quality of Website user interface, with emphasis on the users'perspectives. To the end, we developed an user-oriented evaluation criteria and indicators, and on the basis of these criteria and indicators, conducted a systematic evaluation on the websites of KOSEF's 21 Research Information Centers, which were selected as samples for this study In particular, this study attempted to identify both examples and variables which causes the User group's dissatification on the interface of the sampled websites. Finally suggested are the strategies and methods for improving the quality of user interface in R&D websites.
Library service should be available and accessible to every one. But people with disabilities were much excluded from library and information service in Korea. The information and communications revolution ought to be a passport to inclusiveness the disabled in library and information service. This study describes current library services for the visually handicapped and reviews related critical issues in Korea and the state of the art in adaptive technology for low vision and blindness. And proposes necessary methods to improve library and information services for the visually handicapped in Korea.
The purpose of this study is to suggest a rational guidelines of authority record for personal name heading control. It analyzes the Statement of Principles of ICCP, the headings of Korean Cataloging Rules and personal name heading of KORMARC on Disc. It also investigates the problems and suggests the possible improvements for headings of personal name. The rules for heading control retains the frame from headings of cataloging rules. The guidelines for heading control of personal name will be integrated in the rules for headings. To efficient retrieval, It suggests distinction of different persons of the same name and subject List.
Current states of Korean biographical databases are evaluated based on the dissatis faction factors identified by a user survey. currency, coverage, completeness, and variety of the Korean biographical databases are evaluated and compared with overseas biographical databases. The results of the analysis are given with problems and suggestions for the future improvements.
The purpose of this study was to apply internet technology to school library, and to construct the contents of KISLMC(Korean Internet School Library Media Center). The content of KISLMC was composed of three categories, Cyber library, Supporting the materials for teaching and learning, and Guidance and counseling to the students. To develop the user-oriented interface, interface metaphors such as icons and images were used. Also, sitemap, search engine, index were used to avoid to be lost during the navigation.
School Libraries are facilities which support teachers and students in their teaching and learning activities and help to fulfil the school curriculum. Recently the Ministry of Education & Human Resources and Development is emphasizing ‘self learning’and it means that the problem solving ability of students can be improved through resource based learning & self learning. The resource based learning is closely connected with school libraries. School libraries are basic organization among all kind of libraries in all parts of th country and they can not develop without the systematic support of the government. The school libraries are just nominal because education in schools is centered on entrance examination and the government is indifferent to them. Therefore, it is urgent to constitute the related regulations and systems to rescue school libraries. The present school libraries laws should be revised toward the direction of effectiveness and it is possible to revise them after School Library Promotion Acts are constituted in public. All kinds of system and organization can develop only when they attach great importance to people Even though we constitute good laws and have good systems, they can not develop without the support of administrative organizations. They can develop when the administrative organizations have the strong will to develop them and are affectionately interested with them. The development of school libraries are under the control of strong interest and will of the people who are in charge of the systems and apply the related regulations.
The purpose this study is tend to consider the direction and policy making when the libraries make a decision of outsourcing with the analysis of the application experiences of outsourcing in the academic libraries (including junior college libraries). The research method of this study is questionnaire technique with the theoretical search. The results of the study are as follows: Libraries which experienced outsourcing are satisfied with the results. The subject of the outsourcing are most focused on the cataloging. The efficiency rate was high when the library staffs was participated in the implementation of outsourcing. And respondents answered that the lack of professionalism of vendors which made the outsourcing difficult and reference work is impossible to outsource in the near future.
The purpose of this study is to extend the role of Academic libraries as a local information center to link with communities. Information that can be shared by everyone, need a certain social device that makes everybody to be served equally. Irrespective of their kinds, all the libraries including Academic, public and ones should seek the way to cooperate among themselves. The regulations about the Academic library extention should be stipulated. In addition to, this study is going to suggest more about probabilities for social changes and reality than suggesting alternatives.
This study is to analyze a cost-benefit and a cost-effectiveness on the basis of number full-text downloaded from IDEAL in the electronic journals consortium of Y University Library during 2000. The result of this study shows that Y University Library used more the combined print and electronic journals than only electronic journals, and in the case of the analysis on the cost-benefit, there was no benefit, but the cost-effectiveness was very high. Based upon the result of this study, it suggests that academic libraries request a trial from the information agency and carry out user instruction analysis of varied use statistics, user satisfaction survey so as to promote use of electronic journals.
This study examines the regulations and circulation policies regarding external users of twenty four university libraries opening their services to communities. Also several considerations are discussed about introducing external user library services for communities.
