The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of establishing the national reciprocal borrowing scheme for academic libraries in Korea. The national or regional borrowing schemes could be operated to further the resource sharing among academic libraries as an alternative or supplement to ILL. In this research, the characteristics of those borrowing schemes in other countries are discussed, and some strategic plans, including the organization in charge and the operating principles, are suggested for the national borrowing scheme in Korea.
The purpose of this study is to provide for efficient health information service which doctors may use for their better medical practice and scientific research. 177 doctors were surveyed from December 3 to December 21th in 2007. This study mentioned activities of information need and use that were evaluated by information gathering methods used, information source, frequency of use, and degree of satisfaction toward library services. Doctors showed that they need information mainly to know the recent research results in their interesting subject field and to treat a patient. Doctors trended to obtain information through internet search because easy access and easy use, accuracy and up to dateness of information use. Doctors trended to seek information mainly through library, but they showed relatively low frequency of library use because they do not know how to use it.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the teaching competency level of professor and to suppose the strategies and policy issues for improving teacher librarian education system in Korea. This study was carried out to measure teaching competency of teacher librarian. This study participated by 120 elementary schools and secondary teacher librarian. The questionnaire consisted of 52 items for measuring teaching competencies of teacher librarian divided into nine area competencies. Based on the analysis results of this study, It was suggested the revision strategies of teacher education system.
This study analyzes the general status and major activities of the Friends of the Libraries, volunteers, and Library Foundations in the areas of the County of Los Angeles areas, including Los Angeles City areas, with a special regard to the participation of human resources outside from the public libraries themselves. It based on the researcher's visits to the public libraries and their branches and their friend groups in the areas including those of Los Angeles Public Library, La Crescenta Public Library, Glendale Public Library, and Library Foundation of Los Angeles; related materials given from those libraries and groups upon his visits; and other additional information from their homepages. It finalizes with some suggestions for the Korean library community related to the areas.
The purpose of this study is to identify the main subjects of the reading programs which are provided by the public libraries during september, “the reading month," in 7 metropolitan cities, Seoul, Pusan, Daegu, Incheon, Daejeon, Gwangju, and Ulsan. To achieve this purpose, the data are collected from 622 programs of the sixty-two libraries. The content analysis method was used to analyze data and find results from it. The results are summarized as follows:1. Reading and culture are identified as the main subjects of the programs.2. The preferred subjects among the public libraries in 7 metropolitan cities are identified as different.
This study is to analyze factors affecting the quantitative size of interlibrary loan service in 22 national and public university libraries of Korea in 1992-2006. The results of this study are summarized as follows: The factors related to interlibrary loan service showed a positive effect on the number of lending and borrowing cases, in addition to showing a highly positive correlation with them on the whole. And the most influential factors of them on the number of lending and borrowing cases showed as follows: On the number of lending cases, ‘number of graduate students'; on the number of borrowing cases, ‘volumes loaned' and ‘number of undergraduate students'.
With the advent of the Web 2.0 technology, its versatility has been experienced through various web sites. Consequently, many library users request to implement this technology into the library information system. Here this paper try to increase our understanding of the concept and technology of the Web 2.0, Library 2.0. and Catalog 2.0(OPAC 2.0) through literature survey. Also, this paper try to figure out the most applicable technology to the library information system by analyzing the representative web sites and libraries equipped with Web 2.0 technology. Finally, based on the analysis results, this study suggests an applicable practical plans in the field of catalog, retrieval and auxiliary services toward the user-friendly library information system. We also indicate several side effects expected with the implementation of the suggested plans.
Library marketing is increasingly becoming a crucial part of library management as it allows libraries to analyze its customer base and their needs, develop library products and services customized to such needs, and actively promote those new developments to customers. To realize those steps, we need a competent marketing librarian. This study aims to define the role of marketing librarians and their required capacity to develop and execute effective library marketing strategies, and it also suggests training methods to foster marketing librarians.
Providing web-based information literacy is a new turning point in the library instruction. After 2005 many university libraries are adopted to web-based information literacy. However as a result of research found out that initial problems of introduction to web-based information literacy are shown such as the lack of interest and motivation causing factor, the simplicity of providing method and so on. In order to maximize the effectiveness of web-based information literacy, working out in the way how to use library, how to search, demand of information, information ethics are the factors which should be constructed in the overall content aspect of web-based information literacy. Also, understanding and analysis of the tendency of users through the provision of diversity, flexibility of IT technology is based on a secure, and the need to pursue a variety of media are the factors which should be needed the way how to provide.
The Aim of this study lead to facilitating schemes of cultural program in public libraries. In order to present schemes, We analyzed status of operating cultural programs in domestic and outside the country. Research methods are literature investigation, survey and case analysis. As a result of this research, facilitating for cultural programs in public libraries is presented five schemes. We would like to use the result of this research as basic data for supporting policy of cultural program in public libraries.
This study examines the differences in children’s reading comprehension and satisfaction of storybooks according to a type of medium(paper and multimedia e-books). Six different storybooks were used and 85 children participated. Each child read a paper book and an e-book(both are different books). The study results showed that overall, the type of medium did not significantly affect the children’s reading comprehension of all six storybooks: for two storybooks, some comprehension scores of paper books were higher than those of e-books, on the other hand, some comprehension scores of e-books were higher than those of paper books. Satisfaction scores of paper books are a little bit higher that those of e-books, although resulting in no statistically significant difference between two types. In addition, the study suggested that the amount of annual readings is positively related to improving children's composition ability and information acquisition ability. Finally, we proposed how to promote the use of e-books in the school library environments in terms of its usability and management policies.
This study aims to perform an evaluation of unified search services provided by major Korean search portals, Naver, Daum, Yahoo-Korea, and Empas. These unified search services are evaluated in terms of the relevance of search results. In conducting this study, real queries that real users submitted were used. This study also utilized click logs that consist of documents users clicked and viewed. The results of this study can be implemented to the development and improvement of portal's unified search services. Users can refer to the results of this study in choosing unified search services from search portals.
The purpose of this research is to perform reading based on their levels of reading readiness for different groups of readers, to develop the Book Talk Show program which was dependent on the philosophies and emotions on reconstructed topics of the concerned books by Talk, Music, and Video Shows, enabled communal sharing of the effects of reading, to provide an evaluation tool of such applications in real readings, and to evaluate the validity and usefulness of the devised program scheme. At first, the concept of “Book Talk Shows" was established on the base of the definition of Talk, Music, and Video Shows, then the program was applied to the readers across 4 different Book Talk Shows, and examined its problems and any possible revisions. At the same time, the survey was conducted on 39 experts and professional in the field of Book Talk Show management[31 people(79.5%) provided answers to the survey) on the validity and usefulness of the devised program scheme. The Results of survey showed that 27 people(87.1% of the people who provided answers to the survey) said that these suggestions were “very valuable and useful" and 24 people from this group(88.9%) said that they would like to “apply" such program designs to their own programs. However, the vast majority of the recipients said that they would face problems of 'budget' and 'readiness' when applying such program design, and emphasized the importance of budget assurance in developing and applying future models in Book Talks Show programs.
Library catalogs are as a tool in order to satisfy the information needs of user but currently user's need is more complex and more diverse. Therefore, currently library catalogs do not meet the user's need and have some limitations. One of the ways for solving this problem will provide for the table of contents about monography. However recently, table of contents about books is builded individual library itself so the redundancy issue is pointed to waste of the cost of materials and human resources. Therefore, it should establish a standardized table of contents information DB and each of the related institutions can collaborate and share ways to be provided to take advantage of the table of contents. In order to this, central institutions should be provided a standardized way of building DB, provided conversion program, and mutual sharing principles associated with the building of table of contents DB.
This research aims to suggest ways of establishment and management of the Regional Central Libraries, which are expected to play an important role in promoting the quality of library services in metropolitan regions. The field survey for this research, however, shows that many regional governments have difficulties to establish and/or run the Libraries and the difficulties come from their inexperience in the library services. On the basis of the analysis, it suggests standard organizational structure of the Regional Central Libraries and specifies their services according to their roles and functions.
Information technologies has been playing critical roles in libraries and the practice of information technologies has expanded to various service areas. This study investigated information technological factors in the qualifications of librarian job ads to identify major information technology skills and experiences for librarians. As the result of investigation, the major preferences for information technology skills and experiences are identified in each group of librarians such as administration and management, reference, technical service.
Copyrights have threatened by some people even though information transfer methods are various and users can change information with others rapidly through the improvement of digital technology. The purpose of this study is to identify illegal actions against academic library users and to propose a solution to the copyright problem. Through understanding general concepts of copyrights and illegal cases against copyrights, collected essential cases were analysed. The results show that library users have copied and transferred illegally some materials with knowing unlawful actions.
This research allows purpose to investigate aspect of reading movement and reading education in the early period of the 1990’s. This is succession research that is the Japanese Occupation Period, after release, the 1950’s, the 1960’s, the 1970’s, the 1980’s reading popularization movement research as current trend of opinion to examine modern reading popularization movement. Such series research that reading phenomenon analyzing comparison, is to find present address of reading movement and reading education. accordingly all sorts correct judgment about reading phenomenon, hereafter that will be foundation that unfold reading education more effectively. In main discourse first, investigated, reading movement, and second, observed classifying distinguish reading of student from reading of ordinary people by readers' interest etc.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the reading events in the public libraries, and to present the development methods on the reading events like these: 1. making the wholly responsible post for reading development, 2. planning various events such as the week for reading, the month for reading every season, 3. planning various events for users of libraries, 4. giving the reading development work to the librarian with the teacher librarian certificate, 5. preparing the multipurpose room like the audio-visual room for the reading development, 6. PR through a cyber space and the like for the reading development, 7. cooperating with the related organizations, 8. increasing the budget for the reading development.
Scholarly journal is the important media of the scholarly communication and the representative noncommercial works which aim the openness and the share of the scholarly information. Recently the concern about the open access movement of the scholarly journal is increasing in Korea. However, the copyright issues are becoming the big obstacle of the open access and the archiving of the scholarly journal paper. This study investigated the copyright dispute examples of the scholarly journal paper and analyzed the present conditions on the copyright possession of 906 scholarly journals registered in Korean Research Foundation. On the basis of the result, the paper proposed the concrete copyright plan for the open access and the archiving of the scholarly journal paper in Korea.
