상담이 우리 나라에 소개된지 반세기가 지났지만 아직도 우리는 백인 중산충의 가치관에 입각한 상담 접근들을 그대로 실시하고 있다. 서양 문화권에서는 개인주의적이고 수평적인 인간관계가 대부분인 반면, 동양 문화권에서는 집단주의적이고 수직적인 인간 관계가 보편화 되어 있다. 그리하여 우리 나라 내담자들을 상담하기 위해서는 우리 문화에 걸맞는 상담 접근이 모색되어야 한다. 상담자에게 스승의 역할을 기대하는 우리 문화권애서는 상담자가 치료자로서의 역할뿐만 아니라 교육자로서의 역할까지 담당해야 상담효과를 낼 수 있다고 본 다. 그리하여 상담자는 어른으로서 기능해야 하는데 현실역동 상담에서 강조하는 상담자 상 은 엄부자모(嚴父慧母)다. 그리고 그 동안 각 상담접근에서는 주로 개인의 정서 또는 사고를 각각 강조했는데 현실역동 상담에서는 지ㆍ정ㆍ의 모두가 함께 강조되어야 비로소 태도변화 가 이루어진다고 본다. 그리하여 이 접근에서는 총제적 입장을 띠며 태도변화를 모색하기 위해서는 무엇보다 정확한 문제파악과 역동에 대한 이해가 필요하다고 했다. 나아가 변화에 대한 의지를 촉발시키기 위해 다양한 기법을 동원하되 특히, 직면 기법이 유용하다는 것을 거론했다. 그리고 마지막으로 상담이 심정을 다루는 작업이니 만큼 정확한 이해가 전제된 수용 또한 매우 중요한 요인임을 역설했다.
We still practice those counseling approaches without any modification which have been developed by the Western. The characteristic of the Oriental culture is different form the Western culture in various aspects. The Western culture is based on horizontal-individualism but the Oriental culture, especially the Korean culture is grounded on vertical collectivism. The purpose of this study is to provide a suitable counseling model to our culture: Reality Dynamic Counseling. For that purpose, several influential counseling approaches are examined to find out why these make trouble with the Korean. A counselor places emphasis on a client's will as well as thought and emotion in this Reality Dynamic Counseling. To do that a counselor has to be skillful to confront a client with his problem. Moreover, it is contented that the counselor should assume the attitude of an elder(teacher) in attempting this approach. The ideal attitude of an elder in this approach can be taken out from a stern father and an affectionate mother who have been our ideal parents traditionally.
