본 연구는 청소년들의 외상경험의 실태를 조사하고 외상후 스트레스 증상에 따라 정서적 각성 조절 기능, 자기에 대한 인식, 대인관계와 타인지각과 관련되어 있는 영역에서 성격 특성의 차이가 나는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 지방 대도시에 소재하는 두 곳의 고등학교에서 2학년에 재학중인 학생들 839 명 가운데 최소한 한 가지 유형의 외상경험을 한 학생들 300명의 자료가 분석되었다. 약 35.8%가 최소한 한 가지 이상의 외상경험을 한 적이 있다고 보고하였고, 그 가운데 57.3%가 지난 3년 이내에 그와 같은 경험을 한 것으로 보고하였다. 외상경험을 한 청소년들 가운데 약 17%가 다소 높은 수준의 외상후 스트레스 증상을 갖고 있었고, 그들 가운데 34.3%는 증상을 3개월 이상이나 갖고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 외상후 스트레스 증상이 높은 청소년인 경우 그렇지 않은 청소년에 비해 충동적이고 사회적 규제나 규범에 순응하지 않으려는 경향이 있고, 자아존중감이나 자아개념, 학업자신감도 낮게 나타났다. 그리고 가족 관계에 대해서도 부정적인 시각을 가지고 있었다. 반면에 기존의 연구 문헌에서 보고된 바와 달리 일반적인 자신감의 저하나 신체적 측면에서의 불만과 왜곡된 지각, 그리고 사회적 관계에서의 역기능적인 문제들에서의 차이는 발견되지 않았는데, 그와 같은 영역에서의 외상 후 변화는 외상경험 자체의 구체적인 특성에 따라 달라지기 때문인 것으로 여겨진다. 이 연구를 통해 국내 청소년들의 외상경험과 그에 따른 심리적 영향을 이해하는 기초적인 경험적 자료를 제시하므로써, 교사나 상담가, 그 외 청소년 관련 전문가들에게 필요한 정보를 제공할 뿐 아니라 아동 청소년의 외상에 관한 후속 연구들의 기초를 마련하고자 한다.
This study examined the prevalence of traumatic experience in adolescents, and its effect on the posttraumatic stress symptoms as well as on such personality characteristics as affect regulation, self-perception, and interpersonal relationship. Among 839 sophomore students from two high schools located in a major city in Korea who participated in the survey, data from 300 students (35.8%) who reported that they had experienced at least one traumatic event were analyzed. Approximately 57.3% reported that the traumatic event had occurred within the last 3 years, and 17% of them were found to have a high level of posttraumatic stress symptoms. The adolescents who had a high level of posttraumatic stress symptoms were found to have lower impulse control functioning and societal conformity tendency, as well as lower levels of self-concept, self-esteem, and academic confidence. They also reported having more negative attitude toward their family relationship. No differences were found in such areas as general confidence, physical self-acceptance, and inhibited social/peer relationships, which might be attributed to the lack of differentiation of trauma types used in the analysis. The findings of this study provide a preliminary data on the trauma experience and its psychological effect on Korean adolescents. Several limitations of this study as well as suggestions for future study were discussed.
