The Verification of a Structural Relationship Model of Suicidal Ideation to Stress, Coping Styles, Perfectionism, Depression, and Impulsivity

Abstract

Increasing suicide rates in our society are becoming a significant public health concern. The purpose of the current study was to examine whether individual factors (including passive means of coping with stress, being concerned about mistakes-a subscale of perfectionism, impulsivity, and depression) mediate the relationship between stress and suicidal ideation among 185 college student volunteers. Impulsivity had the largest effects on suicidal ideation in the adopted model. Stress predicted impulsivity via the passive means of coping with stress, and the impulsivity element predicted suicidal ideation directly. Depression indirectly predicted suicidal ideation via impulsivity. We suggest that other unknown variables predicting suicidal ideation may exist because the variance able to be explained using the variables used was relatively small. The implications for suicidal crisis counseling and future research were also discussed.
