The Effect of Counselor's Narcissism on Counseling Sessions: In Relation to Countertransference Management Abilities and Countertransference Behaviors

Abstract

This study examined the effect of counselor's narcissism on counseling sessions in relation to countertransference. Counselors (N=120) completed the ISP, Inventory of Countertransference Behavior, and Countertransference Factors Inventory. This study revealed the following results. First, the counselor's healthy narcissism was positively related with self integration and the ability to manage anxiety as sub-factors of countertransference management abilities and was negatively related with disinterest/ expulsion of countertransference behaviors. Second, the counselor's defensive narcissism was negatively related with self integration and the ability to manage anxiety as sub-factors of countertransference management ability and was positively related with disinterest/expulsion, control/admonition of countertransference behaviors. The implications of these results are also discussed.
