The Controllability of Adverse Situations and the Determinants of Benefit-Finding

Abstract

The purpose of the present research is to examine the determinants of benefit-finding, defined as “maturity in adverse situations”, in relation to the controllability of adverse situations. Specifically, the present study intended to identify whether the relationship between benefit-finding and perceived pain would vary by level of perceived controllability of adverse situations. In addition, the study examined whether the relationship between benefit-finding and stress coping strategies, hardiness and hope would vary by level of objective controllability in relation to the adverse situations under examination here. This result indicated that perceived controllability of the adverse situations modulates the relationship between perceived pain and benefit-finding. Second, in objectively controllable adverse situations, problem-focused strategies, avoidance-focused strategies, control and hardiness and hope are positively correlated to benefit-finding. However, in objectively uncontrollable adverse situations, only the hope variable was positively correlated to benefit-finding. The findings of the present study have significant implications for practitioners in the counseling fields by providing greater understanding of how to help adolescents overcome adverse situations
