In this study, we analyzed the current situation of court libraries and aimed to propose a future-oriented strategy for preserving and managing their collections. Based on literature and status analysis, the study presents the future preservation strategy of court library collections in three main categories: First, securing space for the long-term preservation of court library collections; second, establishing a system for collecting and preserving court library collections; and third, performing digital archiving for the permanent preservation and utilization of court records, valuable legal volumes, administrative materials, and other judiciary-specific resources. Through this, court libraries, including those in various courts, should resolve the issue of insufficient collection storage space, preserve holdings systematically and efficiently, and activate library use.
Eisner emphasized the importance of problem-solving objectives and expressive objectives in addition to behavioral objectives, and communication through multiple modalities including linguistic, visual, aural, spatial, gestural modes. This study analyzes ‘Libraries and Information Life,’ a textbook developed for information literacy instruction, by dividing it into educational objectives types(behavioral, problem-solving, expressive) and multimodal modes(linguistic, visual, auditory, spatial, and gestural), and seeks to derive implications for setting educational objectives for information literacy instruction and developing textbooks. The textbook has four volumes for elementary low-grade, elementary high-grade, middle school, and high school levels. Educational objectives were extracted from the textbooks, and 3 librarian-teachers were engaged in the analysis of these objectives. The main findings and implications of this study are as follows. First, when looking at the types of educational objectives, the proportion of behavioral objectives was found to be excessively high, and there is a need to strengthen the proportion of problem-solving objectives and expressive objectives. Second, problem-solving objectives tend to overlap with behavioral objectives, indicating a need to develop problem-solving objectives with defined conditions and solution requirements. Third, expressive objectives concentrated in specific units need to be placed evenly in other units. Fourth, in the case of multi-modality mode, the proportion of the linguistic mode must be reduced, the proportion of the visual, auditory, spatial, and gestural modes must be increased, and it is necessary to set educational objectives with clear characteristics of each mode.
This study analyzed the national diversity of journal editors and authors, focusing on international journals in library and information science, and quantified it through Simpson’s Diversity Index. In addition, LIS journals were clustered according to diversity indicators and their characteristics were analyzed, and it was also confirmed whether nationality diversity of editorial members could induce nationality diversity of authors. As a result of the analysis, first, the diversity index of the editors of the LIS (Library & Information Science) international journal was found to be 0.64, which is less than the diversity of the authors, which is 0.76. It was confirmed that as the diversity of nationalities among editorial committee members increases, it is possible to attract authors of various nationalities (r = .79). Second, journals in the IS (Information Science) field showed a high index before or after 0.8 for both editorial members and author contributing countries, but those in the LS (Library Science) field showed relatively low scores, especially among the editorial members, with a very low index of 0.48. Third, the United States has the highest share of both authors and editors, and in particular, it has been confirmed that the LS field has an overwhelming share of 53.39% of editors. On the other hand, in Asian countries, including Korea, the ratio of contributions as editors compared to contributions as authors was found to be lower than in the United States and European countries.
As the number of smart libraries is continuously increasing, activation measures are necessary to expand user engagement and enhance service quality. This study analyzed the usage patterns of four smart libraries in A Library in Incheon, from June 2020 to December 2023. It also conducted user satisfaction surveys and question-and-answer sessions with a librarian. The number of books and loans increased, and two smart libraries in areas without public libraries showed high usage rates. Although users were satisfied with the smart libraries, they pointed out inconveniences such as the limited number of loan books and insufficient books. Consequently, it is suggested to improve user-centered service quality, continuous monitoring and evaluation, as well as active promotion.
This paper is a preliminary study to consider the introduction of structured abstracts to Korean journals in the field of library and information science (LIS). To achieve this, we first identified examples of overseas LIS journals that have adopted structured abstracts, and analyzed the occurrence statistics of each section of structured abstracts for four journals published by Emerald Publishing that emphasize the value of research and practical/social implications sections. Considering the inherent drawback of longer abstracts, we examined the abstract policies and the abstract lengths of recently published articles of four Korean LIS journals. Additionally, we identified some cases where essential elements were missing from the Korean abstracts. Finally, a proposal for the adoption of structured abstracts for Korean LIS journals was presented, focusing on the length of abstracts and the organization of sections. It is expected that the adoption of the proposed structured abstract format will facilitate the utilization of Korean LIS research in the library and information management practice.
This study analyzes the current status of research data management at NST-affiliated government-funded research institutes for the purpose of promoting the sharing and use of research data, and based on this, suggests methods for establishing a research data sharing and management system. The survey on the status of research data management was conducted twice in 2022 and 2023 for a total of 20 research institutes. In addition, difficulties and areas that need to be improved in the management and sharing of research data were identified, and based on this, methods for establishing a research data sharing and management system were proposed by dividing them into policy aspects, system aspects, and linkage system construction aspects. In order to establish a research data sharing system, it would be desirable to prepare a policy basis and present contents such as the definition of research data, scope of application, contents of management, utilization method, and leading institutes. In addition, for systematic and unified research data management, it would be recommended that each institute will establish and manage a repository and management system. By linking this with DataON, the national research data platform, and providing one-stop services, the accessibility and usability of data will be improved.
Article 22(1) of the Library Act, which was completely revised in December 2006, stipulated that regional representative libraries are statutory organizations, and Article 25(1) of the Library Act, which was revised again in late 2021, renamed them as metropolitan representative libraries and expanded their duties. The reason why cities and provinces are required to specify or establish and operate metropolitan representative libraries is that in addition to their role as public libraries for public information use, cultural activities, and lifelong learning as stipulated in Article 23 of the Act, they are also responsible for the legal works of metropolitan representative libraries as stipulated in Article 26, and lead the development of libraries and knowledge culture by serving as policy libraries, comprehensive knowledge information centers, support and cooperation centers, research centers, and joint preservation libraries for all public libraries in the city or province. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze and diagnose whether the metropolitan representative library has been faithfully fulfilling its legal works for the past 15 years(2009-2023), and whether it is properly providing the results of its statutory planning and implementation on its website to meet the digital and mobile era. Therefore, this study investigated and analyzed the performance of the metropolitan representative library for the last two years based on the current statutory tasks and evaluated the extent to which it provides them through its website, and suggested complementary measures to strengthen its web services. As a result, it was analyzed that the web services for legal works that the metropolitan representative library should perform are quite insufficient and inadequate, so it suggested complementary measures such as building a website for legal works on the homepage, enhancing accessibility and visibility through providing an independent website, providing various policy information and web services (portal search, inter-library loan, one-to-one consultation, joint DB construction, data transfer and preservation, etc.), and ensuring digital accessibility of knowledge information for the vulnerable.
This study presents book curation services as one of the ways to establish the social role and status of public libraries in a changing social environment. It aims to identify the quality factors that influence user satisfaction and the intention to continue using public library book curation services. For this purpose, the quality factors were limited to information quality through a literature review on curation services in libraries and various fields, from which specific factors were extracted. A questionnaire survey and statistical analysis were then conducted among public library users. The results showed that among the information quality factors, variety and interestingness affect user satisfaction, while discoverability and usefulness impact both user satisfaction and the intention to continue using the services. Based on these findings, we suggest that public libraries should offer book curation services that allow users to discover new information and select themes that are engaging and interesting, and provide information about various genres and types of books.
The purpose of this study is to develop an evaluation tool for map-based data visualization platforms and to conduct heuristic usability evaluations on existing platforms representing inter-regional information. We compared and analyzed the usability evaluation criteria of map-based platforms from the previous studies along with Nielsen’s (1994) 10 usability evaluation principles. We proposed nine evaluation criteria, including (1) visibility, (2) representation of the real world, (3) consistency and standards, (4) user control and friendliness, (5) flexibility, (6) design, (7) compatibility, (8) error prevention and handling, and (9) help provision and documentation. Additionally, to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed criteria, four experts was invited to evaluate five domestic and international map-based data visualization platforms. As a result, the experts were able to rank the usability of the five platforms using the proposed map-based data visualization usability evaluation criteria, which included quantified scores and subjective opinions. The results of this study are expected to serve as foundational material for the future development and evaluation of map-based visualization platforms.
Recently, with the implementation of the “e-Government Performance Management Guidelines,” there is a growing demand for setting performance indicators for information systems. For systems that provide information services to the public, such as CODIL, it is not easy to set performance indicators. This study presented a research model that applies Monte Carlo simulation to set expected performance targets that can be achieved through CODIL based on objective evidence. Among the survey contents conducted from 2015 to 2023, the statistical characteristics of user satisfaction regarding the frequency of use of construction technology information provided by CODIL were designated as input variables. Future expected targets and confidence intervals from 2024 to 2026 were designated as outcome variables. The expected target value was measured by generating 5 simulation alternatives and 1,000 random numbers for each alternative. Next, the measured expected goals were interpreted and compared with the results of time series regression analysis measured in previous studies. Although, as in previous studies, the expected target value could not be predicted based on time series regression analysis that considers the correlation between years. However, compared to previous studies, this study can be considered a more accurate analysis result because it predicted the expected target value based on 5,000 input variables.
To structure the KOS registry, it is necessary to select a classification system that suits the characteristics of the collected KOS. This study aimed to classify domestic KOS collected through various classification schems, and based on these results, provide insights for selecting a classification system when structuring the KOS registry. A total of 313 KOS data collected via web searches were categorized using five types of classification systems and a thesaurus, and the results were analyzed. The analysis indicated that for international linkage of the KOS registry, foreign classification systems should be applied, and for optimization with domestic knowledge resources or to cater to domestic researchers, domestic classification systems need to be applied. Additionally, depending on the field-specific characteristics of the KOS, research area KOS should apply classification systems based on academic disciplines, while public sector KOS should consider classification systems based on government functions. Lastly, it is necessary to strengthen the linkage between domestic and international KOS, which also requires the application of multiple classification systems.
This study aimed to develop and validate a research model to investigate how the service quality of public libraries, where a 3-dimensional service quality model was applied, impacts user satisfaction and loyalty. We collected 353 valid responses through a survey targeting public library users across 21 locations, considering various regional and library-specific characteristics. Our analysis revealed that physical environment quality (PQ), interaction quality (IQ), and outcome quality (OQ) of service quality influence user satisfaction (US). Additionally, outcome quality (OQ) of service quality impacts user loyalty (UL), and user satisfaction (US) affects user loyalty (UL). We also found that quality improvement is a leading factor for user satisfaction, user satisfaction is the primary factor of user loyalty, and the perception of service quality directly and indirectly affects user satisfaction and loyalty. We concluded that continuous research should be actively conducted to respond to the evolving needs of public library users.
The purpose of this study is to explore ways to improve accessibility to school library materials through analysis of elementary school students’ information search behavior in DLS. Accordingly, the DLS search process was recorded for 26 students attempting a DLS search in the school library, and data was collected through a pre-search questionnaire on overall information needs and a post-search questionnaire on the search process and results. As a result of the analysis, satisfaction was found to be low when the main purpose of DLS use was simple leisure reading, when the search time and number of search words were long, and when there were too many search results. Accordingly, it was emphasized that curriculum subject-related metadata elements should be developed and a curriculum subject-specific thesaurus should be built and used to build lists and support user searches. In addition, it was suggested that the basic functions provided in external searches should be included, and a foundation should be laid in terms of resources and curriculum to systematically provide information utilization education to elementary school students who lack the ability to select search terms and judge the suitability of results after the search. It was proposed to provide an integrated search service with external resources and a personalized book recommendation service.

This study was conducted to examine the user’s experiences with the public library in Daejeon using big data analysis, focusing on the text mining technique. To know this, first, the overall evaluation and perception of users about the public library in Daejeon were explored by collecting data on social media. Second, through analysis using online news articles, the pending issues that are being discussed socially were identified. As a result of the analysis, the proportion of users with children was first high. Next, it was found that topics through LDA analysis appeared in four categories: ‘cultural event/program’, ‘data use’, ‘physical environment and facilities’, and ‘library service’. Finally, it was confirmed that keywords for the additional construction of libraries and complex cultural spaces and the establishment of a library cooperation system appeared at the core in the news article data. Based on this, it was proposed to build a library in consideration of regional balance and to create a social parenting community network through business agreements with childcare and childcare institutions. This will contribute to identifying the policy and social trends of public libraries in Daejeon and implementing data-based public library operations that reflect local community demands.
