In the knowledge economy era, the library must guide the further distribution and an extension of knowledge and information. It implies the fact that the optimal management of library is important and becomes the precondition. And there is a necessity which tries to observe its vertical and horizontal spectrum. This research analyzed the complexity of library management environments, diversification of management paradigms and techniques and its recently trends based on the theories of new public management and administrative reforms of the advanced nations.
The purpose of this study is to suggest the characteristics of a cooperative storage facility for academic libraries in Korea. For this facility, discussed are how to select a site, build physical facilities, recruit participating organizations, prepare for selection criteria and ownership of resources, confirm service policies, and implement a integrated library management and access system. It is emphasized that a cooperative storage facility for academic libraries in Korea should ensure the optimum use of space on campus, preserve “the last copy” which is not frequently used, but still has scholarly values, and extend the effective and efficient resource sharing among participating libraries.
The Internet is now an integral part of the everyday lives of a majority of people. They are demanding web sites that offer credible information - just as much as they want sites that are easy to navigate. But the online reality today is that few Internet users say they can trust the web sites that have products for sale or the sites that offer advice about which products and services to buy. Users want the web sites they visit to provide clear information to allow them to judge the site's credibility. Users want to know who runs the site; how to reach those people; the site's privacy policy; and how the site deals with mistakes. In the eyes of users, all sites are not equal. Users have different credibility standards for different types of sites. For news and information sites, users want advertising clearly labeled as advertising. And users want the site to provide a list of the editors responsible for the site's contents, including the editor's email address. For e-commerce sites, user expectations and demands are just about as high as they can be. They say that it is very important that these sites provide specific, accurate information about the site's policies and practices.
The Pareto principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, describes this common pattern of sales concentration. But long tail principle, that expose the power of majority which had been put aside for a long time, rise as a new business strategy in web 2.0 era. In digital and online environment, as created the conditions that satisfy the need of diversity, long-tail effect has been relevant to all social cultures. This paper consider the long-tail effect from a library service point of view and develop library’s long-tail strategies. For the more, suggest practical plan about library long-tail based on library 2.0.
This research has been done to evaluate a curricular model for the information literacy course and verify its effectiveness in a regular class. The pretest and the post-test which comprised the same 47 questions were executed to 135 students in an information literacy-related course. On the basis of the results, some general conclusions and suggestions for improving the quality of information literacy course were made.
The purpose of this study is to building e-Science environment based on HVEM, remote control system of HVEM and the data portal, which is made by HVEM for efficiently management and sharing of data, are needed. Furthermore, specialized metadata is required as well for the structuralization, storage, management, search and share of the data created from the data portal. In this research paper, we propose the specialized metadata model, only suitable for HVEM, for more efficient management and share of data created by HVEM under the e-Science environment.

Today, if a work is created and published, new items concerned with it gets expended extremely. There are bibliographic relationships between the original work and new items as it is translations, revisions, reproductions, critiques etc. Bibliographic relationships refer to the connections and associations between two or more than two bibliographic items. Tillett's study with taxonomy, as well as other studies of the bibliographic relationships is used as the foundation for analysis of the work types. The current study examines the work types based upon the bibliographic relationships of Korean publications. KORMARC records of the Korean collection of the Chonnam National University Library is used to draw a sample for analysis. The research results of the study are provided for future studies on the KORMARC format and organization of Korean collections.
According to the changing of information environment and user's need, discussion of changing role is increasing gradually in the library, in consequence, interests about the concept of Information Commons, which are integrated IT, education, learning, and cultural functions, are becoming larger.However, in order to adopt the Information Commons in the University library, the model about the consideration and application of basic element is essential. So that, the purpose of this study is to suggest the ways which are adopting the elements and process of the applying Information Commons. In addition, based on Information Commons of Arizona university Library & Indiana University Library which is well organized with model, researcher tried to attempt the virtual renovation to the 'S 'University library'. Through presenting the applicable model of Information Commons, it aims to provide the example of discussion with actively about Information Commons.
This study examines the retrieval efficiency of the FRBR-based bibliographic retrieval system. To do this, we built two experimental retrieval systems(a FRBR-based system constructed through FRBRizing algorithms and an OPAC-based retrieval system) using 387 music materials coded in a KORMARC format. Next, we set up six hypotheses and compared these two systems in terms of recall, precision, and retrieval time using 28 participants and a questionnaire with 12 queries. The results show that the average recall value of the FRBR-based system is higher than that of the OPAC system regardless of query types and the average precision and retrieval time values of manifestation queries of the OPAC system is more efficient that those of the FRBR-based system. This study results can be used to customize digital library interfaces as well as to improve the retrieval efficiency of the bibliographic retrieval system.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the survey and prove the role and impact of teacher librarian's professionalism on the School Libraries Revitalization. The samples of the survey, consisted 96 school libraries in Kyungbuk Province, were revitalized before 2005 by School Library Revitalization Project of Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Korea. The samples were divided into two groups; the one group consisted of 47 libraries managed by teacher librarian, and the other group consisted of 49 libraries which were managed by class teachers who are not majored in Library Science. The questionnaires were mainly conducted by survey but interview, telephone, and e-mail method also used.The state of the art of the library management, including budget, acquisition, cataloging, collection management, circulation, information technology, and the services for the faculties and students between two groups were analyzed and compared. The results showed that teacher librarian group offers more user-tailored and intensive services than class teacher group.
This study aims to propose that archives introduce marketing strategies for their archival reference services. Target marketing which is based on market segmentation for customer satisfaction is popular among enterprises in these days. Market segmentation strategy of target marketing need to be used for user centered archival reference services in archives. This study proposed that demographic, geographic, psychographics, and use variables can be used for archival user segmentation. And for the user segmentation, archives should collect data of use and users systematically.
This study examined the main concepts of SOA and Web Services, and conducted technical analysis of major Web Services protocols such as SOAP, REST, SRW/U, and OAI-PMH that realize SOA, and suggested examples of SOAP and REST based Web Services establishments in foreign and domestic libraries respectively. In addition, it introduced application examples of Library 2.0 using Web 2.0 technology in foreign and domestic libraries and suggested how to apply SOA based Web Services protocol in Library 2.0. Finally, it proposed how to put Library 2.0 into practice applying meta-searching system integrating library OPAC, online bookstores, web portal sites and library union catalogs using REST based Open API.
Marketing techniques developed for private organizations are being widely used in libraries. The primary focus in marketing has shifted to maximizing user perceived value from the perspective of library users. This paper examines library as an industry as a way to establish the basis for library's overall value, applies the R-I-R model and its taxonomy of value in using library and information services, and proposes market orientation approach to systematically plan and coordinate academic library marketing activities.
In the knowledge-based society of 21st century, special libraries face intense competitive environment. So they need to do ‘library marketing' aimed at the organizations which they belong to and customers whom they serve for their survival and success. This study suggests the concept of ‘library marketing', the cases of ‘library marketing' at home and abroad, and concrete marketing management strategies for special libraries in Korea.
The primary questions addressed by this research are the followings: Have the OPAC interfaces of elementary school libraries been designed user-friendly; What difficulties do OPAC searchers experience in using OPACs; How do they perceive the system after searching it; Finding the answers of those questions the problems of OPAC as a searching tool were grasped and recommendations were suggested in order to improve the system. An experiment was conducted and 35 elementary school students performed 5 searching tasks. The searching behavior of OPAC searchers was analyzed thoroughly. The data of their perceptions about the system was collected through a questionnaire after completing the tasks.
The purpose of this research is to analyze the trend and performances of contracting out the management of public libraries in Korea, in order to help promote the effectiveness and efficiencies of their operations. In this research, Investigated in detail are the following issues: First, the need for and background of contracting out public library services and their present state in Korea; Second, the pros and cons of contracting out public library services; and finally, based on the aforementioned findings, a future model of 'contracting out' public library services is proposed in order to further the effective management of public libraries in Korea.
This study investigated the situation of the Korea University and College libraries under the Japanese Occupation of Korea. Keijo Imperial University Library and Bosung College Library were subsidiary agencies and the other libraries were a section or a department. Keijo Commercial High College Library, Bosung College Library and Soongsil College Library had separate building, and the other college libraries shared a building with other sections or departments in the college. Keijo Imperial University Library had the largest staff and the other libraries had between one and four staff members.
This study is to present a draft for the formulation of uniform title for sound recordings of the Korean traditional music. The draft as the results of this study is summarized as follows: In a musical work of a type of non-composition, the popular name is put into square brackets as a uniform title of court music and folk music in the old Korean traditional music, and the composer's original title is put into square brackets as a uniform title of the new Korean traditional music, but the medium of performance and others are omitted except an identifying element. However, for the formulation of uniform title of a type of composition in an instrumental music, the descriptive form consisted of the order of ‘name of one type of composition, medium of performance, serial number, opus number, key, and a descriptive word or phrase' is put into square brackets as a uniform title and the identifying elements. And in the vocal music of the old Korean traditional music, the following medium of performance is used: in vocal choruses, a type of voices; in solo voices, a type of solo voice by sex, but one of the new Korean traditional music follows the descriptive form of the western classical music.
