This study is intended to present methods improving the classification system of KDC education fields after comparing and analyzing the academic system of education, classification system of KDC, NDC, DDC and LCC, and that of the research field classification system of National Research Foundation of Korea. The results of the analysis have revealed that it is required to improve and correct the KDC 5th edition of education including the addition of classification items that reflect the trend of academic development, proper development in the rank classification terms of education detailed fields, addition of detailed subjects, errors of classification symbols and omission of correlative indexes in the classification items. This study has proposed improved methods to solve those problems.
The purpose of this study was to analyse the ralative efficiency of 15 public libraries over a time period(2006-2008) by Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA). The selected input variables were total staff, total area and total holdings. And the selected output variables were total circulations and total user. The results are as followed. First, a technical efficiency trend of public libraries has been improved since 2006. Second, a technical efficiency increase can be explained by increase of a pure technical and scale efficiency both.
Csikszentmihalyi has given the term ‘flow' to describe intense engagement or complete absorption in a task and behaviors. Activities as diverse as rock climbing, art, dance, motorcycling, and work has been reported as producing flow, but the most common optimal experience noted in the research is reading. This paper examines the disposition of reading flow of elementary and second students in Korea, and analyzed on the affecting factors in reading flow. Questionary for this study made of 36 items, including reading text, reading purpose, reading method etc. This study participated by 40 elementary & secondary schools, surveying 1,836 students. In order to verify the disposition and factors of reading flow used Chi-square, crosstabulation, factors by SPSS18.
This study discussed the roles of librarians in readers' advisory services and the education for readers' advisory services in LIS programs. For this, literatures were reviewed and readers' advisory courses provided by LIS programs of North America were investigated. And then the characteristics and contents of readers' advisory courses were analyzed. Based on the analysis, I suggested the education for readers' advisory services in LIS programs of Korea.
Using a qualitative multimethod approach, this study was to discover integrated factors to construct a substantive theory about occupational socialization of librarians. Through theoretical sampling, 42 participants were in-deathly interviewed at three studies, i. e phenomenological, ethnographic, and grounded theory approach. These data were analyzed and finally integrated using grounded theory approach. Emerged integrated factors were: Sharing values of the profession in education, Striving to overcome the peripheral perception, Lack of understanding about the profession, Inadequate conditions, Shared work values, Social changes, Perception about users, Organizational culture of library, Human relations in organization, Continuing education and exchange, Seeking the professional, Strategies for work, Strategies for human relations, Strategies for surviving slump and crisis, Strategies for enhancing oneself, Coping strategies for lack of understanding, Self congruence with the profession, Non-self congruence with the profession.
This study aims to analyze the gap between university students' cognitions and expectations on users' cognitions about dimensions of library staff service quality and the reason of gap. The results showed that the overal service didn't reach the users' minimum expectation. Among the every item of service quality, the greatest expectation service was the quick delivery of non home library materials and staff's politeness. The most great was in-depth subject services and friendly encounter. The staff service quality gave the library satisfaction; in-depth subject services, exact understanding of user needs and politeness.. The great gaps were caused to the lack of willingness to answer question, the lack of communication, and the lack of user care etc.
There is a growing interest in user-centered classification or reader-interest classification, as questions have arisen from the meanings and the effects of traditional library classification. American public libraries have used fiction genre classification called bookstore model as an alternative to the traditional classification schemes. As a result, accessibility to the collection was promoted and library service for their users was improved. This study intends to make a comprehensive inquiry about the philosophical background and functional features of genre classification. To the end, literature survey and interviews or e-mails with librarians in American public libraries were conducted.
This is the survey on the actual condition about the managing of headings in library cataloging. KCR4, the standard rules for the library cataloging in Korea, has no rules for the main entry headings and uniform headings. But the cataloging records are not standardized because a lot of libraries in Korea use the main entry headings and uniform headings yet. A structural revision of KORMARC is required in order that all library follow the rules on the KCR's main entry headings. And the rules for uniform heading used until KCR4's policy about the heading is decided according to international trends are needed.
This study suggests problems with analyzing the contents of ordinances which support establishment and management of small libraries. This study analyzed the provisions which comprise the ordinances, targeting 25 ordinances that a local government enacted. The analysis targets the name of the ordinances, functions of the small libraries, guidelines of establishment, the duties of the local government, manpower in management, management rules of libraries, a steering committee etc. As a result, the provisions of the ordinances were not very different, and it was difficult to find ordinances which reflect regional characteristics. Also, in the provisions, it was pointed out as a restriction that the scale of establishment and management can be altered because there are free provisions more than compulsory ones. Thus, the ordinances of small libraries have to be regarded in local libraries' infrastructure, and supporting guidelines with efforts to assure publicity.
Gwang-Kuk Wonjong Gongsin-Nokgwon(光國原從功臣錄券) is a book which recorded the titles of position and the names of retainers who corrected the Chosun dynasty's genealogy. This study aims to research into existing 4 books of Gwang-Kuk Wonjong Gongsin-Nokgwon, which were to analyze the reasons of grant, structure and forms, the characteristics of meritorious retainers' official positions and social status. As the result, Gwang-Kuk Wonjong Gongsin-Nokgwon is the metal typologic book which was made up Jaeju-Gapin(再鑄甲寅) letter type. The structure of the Gwang-Kuk Wonjong Gongsin-Nokgwon was composed of the beginning(卷首)․the body(本文)․the end(卷末). Gwang-Kuk Wonjong meritorious retainers formed the total of 872 persons(1st grade: 137 persons, 2nd grade: 136 persons, 3rd grade: 599 persons) with 354 official titles. Also an analysis of their social status confirmed that 872 persons were “Yang-ban(兩班)" which constituted the largest group(748 persons : 85.8%), “Jung-in(中人)" were second group(103 persons : 11.8%), “Yang-in(良人)" were 13 persons(1.5%) and “Chun-in(賤人)” were 8 persons(0.9%).
The aim of this study explores the task of bibliotherapy for expansion of library service. There are three subjects for a study. First, I consider the position of bibliotherapy in library community. Second, I examine the outcomes and the critical point of an experimental bibliotherapy program conducted in Korean Library since 2000's. Third, I find out the tasks of bibliotherapy for expansion of library service. It is four tasks that have the problem of bibliotherapy terminology, the librarian's understanding and acceptance about bibliotherapy, education and training for bibliotherapy in department of library science and plans for the expansion of bibliotherapy service.
Opening university library doors to the community is essential to meeting their demands and it is also the duty of university libraries. Since opening doors of university libraries have become more and more significant, this study analysed the conditions of the university libraries that have the open-door policy to external users and carried out an analysis of problems caused by the open-door policy. The following alternatives were suggested : the introduction of the membership system about the external users, the role division of university library and local public libraries, reinforcement of external library user education, and access management about external users.
Nowadays, librarians try to provide equal services and effective facilities to people with disabilities. According to this context, the current and prospective librarians should have a wide range of knowledges and skills that can identify and understand their patron's needs and information seeking behaviors through disability issues education. This study aims at presenting the advanced directions of the LIS education in order to enhance a librarian's experience and strengthen his/her hand on library services for people with disabilities. The result of the study suggests some directions on disability issues in LIS education in the future.
This study has examined the cause of the library anxiety among foreign students upon visiting college libraries. 131 students were investigated using Library Anxiety Scale (LAS) to analyze the relationship between sex, grade, library use education, frequency of library use, Korean skill and cultural heterogeneity. The result of the LAS showed an average of 2.60 among foreign students, and the anxiety from the “mechanical barrier" was scored the highest. For sex, male students tended to be relatively more anxious than female students on the “accommodation of library" and “knowledge of library." Students who participated in the library use education were less anxious than those who did not, and the more one used library, the less one became anxious. Based on these results, the study proposes the way ahead for resolving library anxiety through library use education and frequency of use.
This study analyzed trends in research activity as represented in master's theses and doctoral dissertations in the field of library and information science from 2001 to 2010. This study explores the year of publication, the university of publication, the department/major of publication, and subject by examining recent trends in theses and dissertations in the field of LIS, and comparing the results to previously reported by Sohn, Jung-Pyo, for the period of 1959 to 2002. Conclusions are 1) The finding of this study demonstrate that quantitative progress is being made in library and information science research in 2000s. 2) In comparison to previous study, average number of master's theses and doctoral dissertations per year increased four times. 3) The number of master's theses and doctoral dissertations on the subject area of information services were increased.
The purpose of this study was to develop teaching-learning method for reading guidance librarians in Korean Library and Information Science. Even though it was an increase of needs for reading guidance librarians in libraries, reading education courses provided by LIS in Korea lacked. Also, most reading education courses of LIS stressed knowledge-oriented education than the practice of reading program design or reading experience. So this study developed the teaching-learning method of the self-directed learning for the activities of post-reading portfolio, management of reading program for motivation, and the team-projected learning for the design of reading program.
This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of bibliotherapy on the levels of cognitive function, depression, and social behavior in the elderly with mild dementia. For this quasi-experimental research, a total of 166 subjects the age of from 90 to 65 were selected of the 166, were divided into the experimental group and control group for six months. These findings confirmed that the dementia Bibliotherapy program made a contribution to improve cognitive function and social behavior, and to reduce depression in the elderly with mild dementia. Therefore, it is recommended that this program be used in clinical practice as an effective Bibliotherapy program for the elderly with mild dementia.
