Abstract

This study suggested a plan to convert the modern literary data service of the National Library of Korea into linked data-based services. This is not to simply convert the modern literary data service into linked data, which is the current technological trend. This is to create high-quality source data capable of automated machine processing with continuous connection with various external data and information sources in the long term. To this end, in order to revitalize the service of modern literature and to solve the efficient data linkage with related institutions, various overseas library and bibliographic service cases that adopted linked data were first reviewed to draw implications. In addition, based on the reviewed implications, the plan to reorganize the modern literary service in terms of data management, system management, and user service was described in detail.

Abstract

General-purpose classification scheme encompasses all subject areas, While the whole classification scheme is constructed by library studies experts, structure and preparation of each specific subject area’s classification should be referenced to that specific subject. In order for the whole system to be practical and useful classification scheme, not just a simple collection of each subject area’s scheme, it is necessary to set the rule for properly distributing the amount of classification items, and the collections assigned to these items. The rule to set the distribution of items based on the amount of document collections is called ‘literary warrant’. This study examines actual status of assignment of each classification items to information resources, as a result of application of Korean Decimal Classification, and then suggests a way to improve these practices.

Abstract

In the face of the prolonged Covid-19, this study conducted a network analysis to propose the policy direction for the Korean National Assembly to go forward. Using COVID-19 news articles, various types of networks were created and analyzed for the parliamentary activities of the Korean National Assembly related to Covid-19. Specifically, we utilize the co-occurrence and keyword information to generate two types of parliamentary networks: co-occurrence-based network and content-based network. In addition, a topic keyword-driven parliamentary network was constructed by using topic modeling. The results of the study are as follows. First, lawmakers in the ruling party had a wide range of topics regarding Covid-19, while lawmakers from other political parties had a limited number of issues covered. Next, a few representative legislators were identified as influential actors in most of the centrality indicators. Based on the research results, cooperation on diverse agendas related to Covid-19 should be promoted between lawmakers from various political parties. And representative legislators from both major parties should play a crucial role as intermediaries to increase communication between them.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine international trends in performance evaluation of public libraries. We examined major theoretical models for performance evaluation and its measurement guidelines and tools in the literature. We also conducted case studies to investigate actual practices in major regional public library systems in the United States. In-depth interviews with library staff were conducted in three large U.S. public library systems along with analyses of both internal and public documents. The results of the study inform that the most noticeable trend of performance evaluation was to assess the impact of public library in the lives of citizens and the society. Guidelines and methods to measure intangible impact were developed in both international and national levels. These efforts were also found at the local library levels. While the outcome and impact measures were found to be direct reflections of strategic goals of the library systems, actual impact measures have yet to be refined in actual library practices.

Abstract

In this study, overlapping recommended books in different schools were positively analyzed and the extent to which the recommended books leading to actual loan was statistically analyzed. The purpose of the study is to confirm the effects of recommended books by analyzing the data and extracting the proofs. For the method of research, eighteen elementary schools’ recommended book lists and thirteen elementary schools’ loan data were collected and compared by schools, by grades in a basic statistical analysis method. The result shows that recommended books similarity was low and recommended books affected the total volume of lend books. Loan frequency by grades showed the difference and in every school, lower grades had high loan frequency. The result of this study will be applied as basic data for applying recommended books in school libraries.

Abstract

In this study, co-word analysis was conducted to investigate the intellectual structure of the domestic open access area. Through KCI and RISS, 124 research articles related to open access in Korea were selected for analysis, and a total of 1,157 keywords were extracted from the title and abstract. Network analysis was performed on the selected keywords. As a result, 3 domains and 20 clusters were extracted, and intellectual relations among keywords from open access area were visualized through PFnet. The centrality analysis of weighted networks was used to identify the core keywords in this area. Finally, 5 clusters from cluster analysis were displayed on a multidimensional scaling map, and the intellectual structure was proposed based on the correlation between keywords. The results of this study can visually identify and can be used as basic data for predicting the future direction of open access research in Korea.

Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing cases of management focusing on a reading club using the blended learning at school library and the relevant programs of the free semester system. Therefore, the study has designed a research model for the blended-based management of school libraries, and cases of activities of reading clubs at school libraries for participants in programs linked with the free semester system have been analyzed. As a result of the analysis, first, the confidence level was satisfied in all areas of stability, consistency, predictability and verification on confidence level for related variables of the research model. Second, a meaningful relation has been verified in the correlation analysis between the blended activities and activities of the career search and the career design. Third, as a meaningful static effect has been shown in the contact-free activities in the areas of activities of the blended learning and activities of the career search and the career design, it was verified that programs linked with reading clubs of the free semester system have higher positive effects in the contact-free activities. Last but not least, programs related to local governments to support reading clubs at school libraries have been presented, and management of the blended learning at school libraries has been suggested.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning and essence of the learning experiences of K University students majoring in educational school librarianship. In order to achieve the purpose of the research, an open-ended question-based focus group interview was conducted for 12 major students who had graduated from K University’s master’s degree course within two years. By analyzing the contents of the answers, 9 themes, 35 categories, and 104 concepts were derived from the learning experience in the master’s course. Looking at the main analysis results for each area, the motive for entering the master’s course was to acquire a librarian teacher qualification, which is a condition in applying for the employment examination. The Satisfaction with the learning experience was an average of 7.66 out of 10 points. In addition, the most dissatisfied parts during the master’s course was the contents of the subjects and classes that were not helpful in the operation of the school library and the employment examination for librarian teachers, therefore the response was that improvement is necessary for the future development of the librarian master’s degree curriculum.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the current status of school library assessment and generate discussion points for the development directions of the assessment. Surveys, consulting, and evaluations related to school libraries conducted by the Office of Education, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism were analyzed using meta-evaluations and in-depth interviews with the school librarians. The analysis revealed problems such as duplication of evaluation by various institutions, no reflection of the national school library development plan, low participation rate due to voluntary nature of the assessment, and lack of the educational evaluation index. The solution to the problem was a school libraries’ operation evaluation improvement plan. The plan included the legal evaluation agent specification, the national school library development plan incorporation, inter-agency evaluation network & the case sharing system establishment, and the Office of Education’s investigation and consulting cooperation.

Abstract

This study reports on early adolescents’ health information seeking behaviors that investigated cognitive, affective, and physical aspects of behaviors as they experienced to find information on their needs of health information seeking. In spite of the current widespread internet health information use by adolescents, little research exists to illuminate how they are engaged in cognitive, affective, and physical information behaviors in information search process. Qualitative data were collected through individual interviews informed by Kuhlthau’s information search process. Forty adolescents from S city in South Korea participated in the project. Findings report thoughts, feelings, and actions aspects of information search process. This study expects to extend our knowledge of the adolescents’ health information seeking behaviors of Kuhlthau’s information search process.
