Abstract

It had been said that reading education in Japan has a goal to ‘Lead children's character to a desirable direction’. Since the 2000s, Japan's reading activity was directly linked with an education program to improve children's education ability. These movements for reading in Japan is made more concrete by the ‘Promotion Act on Children's Reading Activities’. For improving the reading skills of the younger generation in Japan, cooperation among homes, regions, and schools is needed. As a result, Japan has an opportunity to build an educational infrastructure for reading support services. The library has also been given an enhanced role as a learning commons. In this background, this study tried to analyze the current state of Japan's reading instruction qualification system, and show their efforts to foster reading specialists for improving the reading skills of the younger generation. This will generate the momentum needed to have the library evolve into learning commons.

Abstract

We had opened a course in the library and information science curriculum, developed and applied a syllabus and some manuals for this course, and analyzed the performance by conducting a survey before and after the training. As the results, first, the necessary components showed a positive relationship of 0.414 with the expected performance effects and showed a positive relationship of 0.452 with the expected learning outcomes. Second, the understanding degree of the Capstone Design course was 3.56 before implementing the curriculum. It was improved to 4.07 after implementing the educational courses. Third, the recognition of the components necessary for the Capstone Design course was improved from 4.13 to 4.39 after carrying out the course. Fourth, the perception of the expected performance effects of the Capstone Design course was improved from 3.77 to 3.88 after the course execution. Fifth, the perception of the expected learning outcomes of the Capstone Design course was improved from 3.79 to 4.22 after the course implementation.

Abstract

The domestic and foreign standards of school libraries suggest that school library should be run to give useful and pleasant experiences to students. This study applies Csikszentmihalyi’s ‘flow theory’ to analyze the relationships between students’ flow experience and their satisfaction about school libraries use. The variables selected in this study are students’ satisfaction, flow experience, library skill, challenge of library use, types of library use and students’ learning styles. The research model is designed by using these 6 variables in this study. The data are collected from 293 students and analyzed by structural equation modeling. The results of this study are as follows: The entire casual relationships show that library skills influence in types of library use, types of library use affect students’ learning styles and students’ learning styles influence in satisfaction through flow. To improve students’ satisfaction about school library use, this study proposes effective ways related to teacher librarians’ role performances to expand students’ flow experience and increase their library skills.

Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of records related to Korea shown in the cataloging records of major 10 Asia-Pacific university libraries. The results are as follows. To begin with, Korea-related records in most university libraries are very poor except for some libraries and are generally 2 times less than Japan related records. There are even 6 times less in 2 libraries. Second, most libraries organize records in MARC 21 format rather than UNIMARC, and apply subject headings of the national library, or go together with LCSH. Third, Korean materials usually write Korean in Roman characters, but 5 libraries are marked with the original Korean language and available Hangeul search. Forth, on investigation of the subject distribution in sub criteria of Korea-related records, subject related to ‘history , ’ ‘economy , ’ and ‘politics’ is largely shown in the highest rate. Fifth, Among the Korea-related subject heading, the terms such as ‘Taekwondo , ’ ‘Kimchi , ’ ‘Dokdo , ’ ‘Donghae , ’ ‘Duman-gang , ’ ‘Baekdu-san’ have different meanings in different libraries. However, these terms agree to LCSH in most libraries except for neighboring countries's libraries.
