The mediating effects of self-criticism, body comparison, and body dissatisfaction on the relation of perfectionism and binge eating

Abstract

The current study examined the mediating effects of self-criticism, body comparison, and body dissatisfaction on the relation of perfectionism and binge eating. Questionnaires were administered to 220 woman college students in Seoul and Daegu provinces. Results in the current study indicated that (1) self-criticism mediated the association of perfectionism with body comparison and body dissatisfaction, (2) body comparison mediated the relation of self-criticism and body dissatisfaction, (3) body dissatisfaction mediated the relation of self-criticism with body comparison and binge eating, and (4) body dissatisfaction showed the most strong direct effect on binge eating. Results implied that perfectionism influence self-criticism which leads to body comparison and body dissatisfaction, and self-criticism and body comparison influence body dissatisfaction which cause binge eating. Results suggest that the mediating role of self-criticism is important in the relation of perfectionism and binge eating which is similar to the relation of perfectionism and other psychological maladjustments, and that body dissatisfaction is one of the most significant predictor to binge eating.
