Abstract

The various concepts of knowledge such as Knowledge Management(KM), Intellectual assets and digital knowledge asset management are currently important issues among many organizations. To the country like Korea that has professed itself for a great power of knowledge information and adopted KM and Record and Information Management(RIM) as the country's main policy, the study on the theoretical basis and best practices of KM and RIM from the perspective of Library & Information science is very urgent. However, many studies on knowledge including KM were mainly done at the business administrative field, and the consolidated study basis on knowledge even in the Library & Information Sciences was quite in deficiency, furthermore any discussion on knowledge, correlation among related systems and the possibilities of cooperation as the development of Information communication has not been done. Therefore, this study is to present the alternative plan of the consolidated management on knowledge through comparative analysis on the definition, main function and trend of KM & RIM. Especially, this study would be the theoretical basis to the public organizations that plan to introduce KM & RIM.

Abstract

Research is one of main roles of university and its importance has been emphasized gradually since a few decades ago. Yet, the objective and concrete criterion for the definition of the research university is not available in Korea. Accordingly, the role of the research university library is not established as a key system for research university. In this study the criterion for the United States research university is applied to domestic universities, thereby current status of research universities and their libraries between the United States and Korea is analyzed comparatively. Fundamental data including budget, employees and information resources for pursuing high research competitiveness necessary for the research university library are provided based on comparative analysis of 98 research university libraries in the United States and 38 domestic research university libraries. Correlation analysis data between library investment and research publication are also provided. Finally this study can be used, hopefully, as a milestone for the establishing strategy of domestic research university libraries.

Abstract

Recently, the speed of changes surrounding university libraries requires a hybrid library environment that supports integrated services, combining a virtual space with physical space of traditional libraries. Through changes, university libraries have faced the need to review their missions and visions, laying stress on the core values of university libraries. This study analyzed the central keywords in the contents of mission and vision statements of university libraries in America, England, Canada, and Australia. The research was acquired from mission and vision statements containing core values of developed university libraries. Core values are present in each area such as collection and information resources, services, place, people, environment and infrastructure, community, and parent-university relations. Ultimately, this study tried to provide the directions and the basic materials for the establishment of missions and visions for university libraries in Korea.

Abstract

This article identifies an emerging research paradigm and monitors the changes in digital preservation area using CiteSpace, a Java application which supports visual exploration with knowledge discovery in bibliographic databases. 74 articles on digital preservation field covering the time period from 1990-2005 were extracted from Web of Science. According to the result of analysis, core knowledge domains in digital preservation are technical preservation strategies, information network and preservation system, knowledge management and electronic government.

Abstract

As the number of users who ask and give answers in the query-answer documents retrieval system is growing exponentially, the query-answer document become a crucial information resource, as a new type of information retrieval service. A query-answer document consists of three structural parts: a query, explanation on query, and answers chosen by users who asked the query. To identify the role of each structural part in representing the topics of documents, the three structural parts were clustered automatically and the results of several clustering tests were compared in this study.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze and systematize the semantic relationships in knowledge organization systems(KOS). For this purpose, classification systems, thesaurus, subject headings, semantic networks, ontology, databases were analyzed in terms of the semantic relationships between terms. Also, various kinds of the terminological relationships not only in the current KOS but in the theoretical researches were collected and analyzed. In addition, six proposals were suggested for the organized system of the terminological relationships for the future uses.

Abstract

Traditional paper records have two aspects such that the paper records are information, and are information media itself. The preservation media for the paper records seems to be another forms for original ones including microfilm and optical disks. On the other hand, new-coming electronic records lack the aspect of information media. To guarantee the existency of the original electronic records we need the preservation media for the electronic records, different from the media for the traditional paper records. The preservation media helps the Authenticity, integrity, and usability as well. This paper describes the need for the preservation media, identifies problems on the existing concept for them, derives the principles to resolve the problems, and suggests the management policy based on the principles.

Abstract

The major role of school librarians in Korea has been providing reading guidance and library user education with paper resources. However, digital users have become more ubiquitous and demand more information with the images and digital materials. Therefore, school libraries need to collect more images and digital materials. At the same time, school librarians have to equip themselves with the ability to cope with this transformation. The qualified school librarians not only should have a teaching certificate but also know about techniques to transform various library materials into digital formats. Teachers and students could use these materials for their Web site homepages and Powerpoint presentations.

Abstract

The study is attempted to identify the factors affecting information literacy among undergraduate students. Through literature review, exposure to related education, use experiences in information resources, advice of the faculty, individual background are considered as variables affecting information literacy attitudes and performance. A questionnaire was devised and collected data from 628 students. Then 24 hypotheses were tested statistically. Descriptive analysis shows differences in information literacy, lower exposure to library instruction, and lack of the faculty advice. Results of the hypotheses testing shows computer and internet education, use experience of the various information resources, gender and major areas of study as factors affecting information literacy. Based on the results, recommendations are suggested to improve the information literacy.

Abstract

The loss of book happens not only from natural disaster but from mostly humans’ improper intention to acquire without proper consideration of ethnic standards. We occasionally have difficulty in differentiating between stealing and loving books since it is often called the basic instinct to possess the books. It is however absolutely illegal to take books belong to others without permission due to one’s pure love towards books, passion to possession, or innate instinct. In this study, we define the definition of book theft and classify the cases of historically well-known book theft. It then states the book plunder cases of Nazi with the abuse of public powers, Libri, and Blumberg in terms of quantity and methods as a history of library.

Abstract

This research suggests the standard reference needed for constructing the bibliographic descriptive national science citation index(KSCI). There are several types of analysis: the APA style, the MLA style, the Chicago Manual Style, and the Korean major periodical's style in Library and Information Science. The core elements are author, title, and issue. We propose the Author-Date system, and Note and Bibliography form. For citation of books only available online, the URL must be included as a part of the citation along with its record of most recent access, and retrieval.
