Abstract

The purpose of this study is on the solution of the problem that have made university students poor readings. What is the factors in make poor progress in reading of the university students. This study suggested the policies and strategies for correcting and improving the poor reading of university students. Especially in this study, it is necessary to establish the reading philosophy of the university students. That is the presentation of reading certification and the credit system of reading in educational system and in reading guidance.

Abstract

This paper presents the organization structure of the Public Library System in Tamil Nadu, the first state in the Indian Republic, and brings out the growth of public libraries in Tamil Nadu after the approval of the library reorganization committee recommendations. Appraises the performance of the Public Library System in Tamil Nadu from 1975 to 2006. An analysis has been made about the nature and adequacy of the existing resources in the public library system in the state of Tamil Nadu, based on the analysis of the statistical data relating to public libraries and their use collected from the annual administration reports of the Directorate of Public Libraries, Government of Tamil Nadu. Based on the analysis and observationsa few suggestions are given for the development of public library system and services in India general and Tamil Nadu in particular.

Abstract

The public library is the local centre of information, the gateway to knowledge. Based on these identities, the public libraries should provide a basic condition for lifelong learning, cultural activities, and information literacy skills of the individual and social groups. The purpose of this paper is to reflect the lifelong learning activities of public libraries and suggest it's directions in Korea. The lifelong learning of public libraries for the future needs to focus on a closer connection with library core competences, supporting information literacy, reducing and bridging the digital divide for individuals with disabilities and the aged.

Abstract

This paper investigats the state of the art of the school library media specialist(SLMS)'s certification in the United States. The content includes development of the SLMS certification, certification requirements, titles, preparatory education programs especially accredited by ALA and NCATE, personnel standards and regulations of states. The basic certification requirements are teacher certification and/or MLIS(MLS), but varying from state to state. Personnel standards are regulated by the Education Department of states, otherwise regional associations of colleges and schools. Nineteen states have the standards and three regional associations among six have very specified ones. The paper also analyzes NBPTS for Library Media and discussions on ‘65% Solution' which is an education reform movement affecting school library seriously.

Abstract

This study is made as part of an attempt to explore the citation dependency in the field of Korean sociology. 213 articles by 136 authors in <Korean Journal of Sociology> by The Korean Sociological Association issued in 2001~2005 were surveyed and their 10,172 references were analyzed. Main research results are as following: 1) Researchers in this field are fairly foreign literature oriented, and problem interest(sources of research ideas) was deriving from domestic literature, but theoretical resources was depending on foreign literature almost. 2) The foreign citation dependency of ‘Foreign Doctor' appeared greatly higher than that of ‘Domestic Doctor', therefore, the country of doctor' degree and the citation dependency was close correlation. 3) Foreign citation dependency appeared high even research to Korea society.

This Study has developed the contents(scope and sequence) of reading education in school library. For this purpose, this study compares and analyze the contents of reading education curriculum in Korea, American and Japan. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the three-year results and impact of a school library revitalization project. The data were collected using school library surveys, questionnaires, and group interviews. The analyses particularly focused on examining the impact of library schedules, programs, collections and uses on the school library's academic achievements. The analyses revealed that the school library uses and the recognition of their importance were improved significantly through school library establishment and remodelling and that school libraries could positively influence students' academic achievements, as shown by studies of the U.S. school libraries. Due to the lack of library collections and professionals, however, it is desired to carry out a further research in this area.

Abstract

This paper aims at identifying the problems in the services for research of academic libraries. For this purpose, research functions of academic libraries and the requirements for them are identified. The hypothesis to be verified is that the service environments of academic libraries have not been coping properly with the changing needs of research activities. The statistics on budgets, staff and services of academic libraries in Korea are compared with those in the United States of America and the United Kingdom. It is concluded that the environments of academic libraries have not met the changing needs of research environments. Based on the conclusion, some suggestions are provided.

Abstract

This study examined the perceptions of freshmen students on the use of a university library site. The students were in the beginning month of their undergraduate program in Hansung University without being taught a formal library instruction session. The results show users experienced uncertainty, difficultly, confusion and anxiety while they were interacting with various functions of the library site. The findings revealed that the users' perceptions were originated from: (1) the insufficiency of the students' knowledge and skills related to library use and (2) the inadequacy of the library system features, in particular its interface features. Based on the findings, implications to improve library instructional services and system interfaces are suggested.

Abstract

KORMARC formats have been developed in accordance with type of materials at different times. The format was firstly developed and soon after with formats for serials, audiovisual materials, archival and manuscript materials. Although all of the formats were developed according to the same principles, there were same inconsistencies among them. However, there are solved above problems as integrating KORMARC bibliographic formats. First of all, the result was better than we had expected both unified cataloging rules and standard of a descriptive form as accepted KCR4. This study is to roughly analyze integrating process, integrating contents, and problems of KORMARC format.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore strategies for development which could help academic libraries expand and strengthen their significances in the midst of structural innovations for universities in Korea. In this study, the trend in changes in academic libraries affected by financial difficulties and structural reforms in universities is analyzed, and major issues and challenges that academic libraries have currently faced are investigated. Also, reviewed are strategies that major academic libraries in advanced countries have built, and it is suggested how to establish strategies for development and medium-and long-term plan for improving academic libraries, which should be carried out on the government level.

Abstract

In these days, the public library role for the lifelong education is getting enlarger. Thus the study suggested the ground of argument for the necessity that the public library should be in charge of the lifelong education through the relationship between the public library and the lifelong education. Based on this argument, the tendency or trend of the lifelong education, which has been performed overseas and domestically, was researched in the aspects of content, object, connection, basic facility and etc. As the result, the basic data needed to establish the lifelong education system in the library was suggested.

Abstract

Despite the rapid adoption of electronic journals, the need for print journals still remains. The current level of foreign journals acquisition poses a threat to strengthening the national research capabilities. Furthermore, there is too much overlap among academic libraries for foreign journals. We propose the establishment of government funded foreign research information centers to systematically acquire and distribute foreign print journals. We discuss specific approaches to selecting and operating such centers. Foreign research information centers are expected to enhance the national scholarly information infrastructure as well as the academic libraries' core capabilities.

Library issues included contracting out, outsourcing and name changes of public library. Abstract

To improve the dCollection system, it is suggested that the usability tests of the dCollection system are needed to find out whether submitters or IR managers are satisfied with the system or not. For the usability evaluations, we used sixty participants, thirty for its management module and thirty for its submit and retrieval modules and for its test constructed the five evaluation indicators including architectural/visual clarity and effectiveness. Based on the results of the usability tests, some improvements in terms of supportiveness, usefulness and visual clarity were suggested.

Abstract

The goal of this study was to evaluate vision, mission, strategies, and action plans from the long-term development plan for the B University’s library, and specificity, measurability, achievability, relevance, and time-frame were measured and evaluated for each with SMART method. The results obtained through this study are as below: Firstly, SMART evaluation result for the B University’s library was 3.80 for the vision, 3.97 for the mission, 3.74 for strategies, and 3.64 for action plans. Secondly, specificity of the long-term development plan for the B University’s library was 4.06, measurability was 3.72, achievability was 3.68, relevance was 3.90, and time-frame was 3.58. Thirdly, the overall evaluation of the long-term development plan for the B University’s library showed that among components from the development plan, the mission was the most superior while action plans had problems. Fourthly, in SMART evaluation factors, specificity was the most superior while time-frame had problems such that it should be supplemented in the future.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to induce a librarian to construct databases lawfully and the user with a copyright and the fair use. Based on information from web sites, the domestic medical libraries(32) were investigated for analyzing how to deal with copyright problems. The results show that only 28% of the medical libraries provide users with information on copyright at their web site. The terminology used was different among libraries. 44.4% of the libraries use ‘copyright law' and 33.3% ‘copyright'. The terminology appeared at the ‘notice' menu and ‘library guidance' menu. The detail part of copyright contents was shown at ‘the data copy and transmission', ‘full text DB use', ‘thesis and dissertation service', ‘FAX/file transfer', ‘Image(Ariel)', and ‘interlibrary loan'. In general, there was a necessity to the correct understanding of the copyright and fair use.

Abstract

This study intends to make a comprehensive inquiry about practices of cataloging outsourcing implemented in Korea libraries. To the end, this study examined (1) how many libraries is carrying out the cataloging outsourcing, (2) why libraries consider cataloging outsourcing, (3) methods and procedures of cataloging outsourcing and (4) advantages and disadvantages of cataloging outsourcing from catalogers' perspectives. The data needed for discussion were collected by two methods: a survey with 138 public libraries and an in-depth interviews with 10 catalogers drawn from the survey participants.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to closely examine the level of effect the job factor has on the organizational commitment of public librarians. To do this, I have divided the job factors in to four categories; Job specification, Job satisfaction, Job Involvement, Job performance, and classified the level of organizational commitment into three categories; affective, continuance, normative and examined the level of organizational commitment of public librarians for each classification, and also analyzed the relationship for each factors and their importance.

Abstract

This study intends to portray the everyday lives of the urban poor in Busan metro area, especially in terms of the information perspective. Employing basic qualitative data collection tools such as interviews and participant observation, the study attempts to illustrate such phenomena as information needs and behaviors, and to scrutinize the reasons of particular behaviors in information seeking and gathering. This paper, specifically, focuses on the following characteristics of information need and information-related behavior of the urban poor; types of everyday concerns and ways to cope with such concerns; types of the help providers; characteristics of information channels of everyday information seeking and information gathering. The role that interpersonal sources play in their everyday lives, has been emphasized in reality of their information environment along with information needs and information related behaviors including information gathering and information seeking.

Abstract

In this study we analyzed contents in terms of contents, menu, and labeling system to support the functions of children's library websites as an access tool to its contents. As a result, the main menu structure consisted of 15 categories that are commonly provided by 31 existing children's websites. Second, first-level categories consisted of total 57 categories under 15 main menu categories. The results showed that the contents in children's website design should consider the goals and function of children's library. Also the study implied that the contents provided by the site should use consistent and standardized menu structure and labels.
