Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the characteristics of “One Book, One Community” reading promotion campaigns in which universities are involved in the U. S. A. Many universities and colleges in various communities participate in “One Book” campaigns in communities as leaders or partners, and promote reading for students on campus through either “One Book, One Campus” or “common reading programs.” Universities can contribute a lot to “One Book” campaigns in com- munities by providing library collection, human resources, and facilities, and especially coordinating programs and events which require subject specialties. Also, they can promote the significance of reading literary classics. “Common reading programs” help freshmen easily adjust to campus life and build the sense of belonging to the “academic community” by reading the same book and talking about it with other members of universities.

Abstract

Many libraries and information centers offer various resources on their websites and web reference is one of them. However, it can be quite burdensome for individual libraries to build a reliable database while sorting through countless web data. The attempts to build a collaborative database have been also unsuccessful due to heavy workload of librarians and financing problems. This study seeks to propose a UCC(User Created Contents)-based web reference database created by general users including librarians. It is an open reference database where everyone can contribute regardless of their affiliation and library types(for librarians). Also, it requires metadata scheme to standardize web-based references. By setting the initial metadata, it can present a basic guideline for users to post web references.

Abstract

The number of public libraries is not good enough in Korea. The main reasons why there are not many libraries are: the lack of people's recognition of necessity and importance of public libraries, stingy investment by the central and local governments for building public libraries, and no policy on effective building of public libraries. Now, there should be a policy on building and operating small-size public libraries that the developed country adopts. Redevelopment of local areas and reconstruction of old apartment complex are the best chance of building small-size libraries in those areas. The apartment complex in which this study took place is going to be reconstructed in the near future. A small-size library can be built with a district office and a post-office as a multi-complex building. Building a small-size library with public institutions or business buildings in the place of redevelopment of local areas and reconstruction of old apartment complex is one of the best solution of solving the lack of public libraries in Korea.

Abstract

The paper analyzes local children's libraries' status of application of classification scheme and problems and difficulties in its application in order to be used as basic material for development of classification scheme for exclusive use of children's libraries. Through survey, the paper researched 96 local children's libraries, and the results showed that KDC-applied libraries numbered 53 and were the highest, libraries which developed their own classification scheme numbered 22, and libraries which applied classification scheme for children's library numbered 13. Further, many asserted that there needs to be a development of standard classification scheme to be used in children's library. On problems and difficulties in applying classification scheme, notes such as difficulty of accommodating various forms of children's books(such as comic books and picture books), placing too much emphasis on collection of books on certain topic, and lack of topic categories appropriate for characteristics of collected books were voiced, and by holding additional discussion on these, the paper raised the usefulness of the dissertation to be used as basic materials for developing classification scheme for exclusive use of children's library in the future.
