Abstract

The purpose of this study aims to provide possible suggestions for the improvement KDC 5th ed. as a system. After analyzing and evaluating various devices of KDC 5th ed. such as schedules, common auxiliary tables, internal tables(omitted), notes, relative index, precedence order(omitted), alternatives, manual(omitted) and relocated table(omitted), suggestions for the improvement were proposed. If above suggestions are adopted, effective literature classification scheme which is suited to domestic circumstances will be certainly prepared.

Abstract

Currently, our country doesn't have standard children's library classification whose development reflects characteristics of children's library and children's books, and for this, not only the children's library working staffs but also users have to deal with a lot of discomforts and difficulties. This study was to take into account these facts of reality and attempted to develop Children's Library Classification (CLC) that is widely applicable to children's libraries. For this, the paper examined the category of children's books and analyzed classification conditions of children's library. Based on this examination and analysis, the paper developed CLC. This study finds its meaning in that the CLC developed by this study was based on KDC, was newly reformed for children's library, and was developed by reflecting the characteristics of children's library and children's books as much as possible in the formation of classification category and progression level per subject; the author expects that it could actually be applied to classification of children's books regardless of the size and type of children's libraries.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify the gain and loss of cataloging outsourcing in Korea public libraries. To this end, the following specific research questions are investigated: (1) How much has cataloging outsourcing enhanced the efficiency of cataloging operations? (2) What is an influence of cataloging outsourcing on the quality of catalogs? and finally, (3) Is there any evidence to strengthen core library service by outsourcing cataloging? The data needed for this study were collected from a survey with 3 public libraries which have experienced outsourcing. To make a comparative study, a survey with 3 public libraries against outsourcing are also included.

Abstract

This study was intended to investigate the quality control in technical services outsourcing in academic libraries. For this purpose, investigated related papers and the experience of outsourced technical services in three academic libraries. Data from senior librarians charged with revision of catalogs are gathered. Issues of catalogs production and quality control are explored and statistics of outsourcing is analysed. Quality control is a major factor of the success of technical services outsourcing operation. The some suggestions in order to enhance quality of vendor-supplied cataloging are presented.

Abstract

This study examined and compared existing national library RFID data models, especially for Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, France, the U.S., Australia and South Korea. Four European country models(i.e., Danish, Finnish, Dutch, and French models) and South Korea use prescriptive data model(fixed encoding approach), while The U.S. and Australia adopt object-based data model, which is based on the data encoding rules of ISO/IEC 15962. This study expects to allow fertile ground for discussion on RFID data models in South Korean library environment.

Abstract

The Joint Steering Committee represented final draft of RDA that can be replaced for AACR3 on November third in 2008. RDA is aiming at standard of international cataloging rules fo the purpose of providing the bibliographic description and the access point of all media, and when it will be realized, KCR4 4th edtion have to revised to following up it. This study analyzes both cataloging rules of RDA and KCR4 in each area of KCR 4th edition. As a result, it present the points to take into consideration as revising KCR4.

Abstract

This study is to develop knowledge base system for query extension to the user oriented information retrieval. This study has survey the theories of the concept-based information retrieval method and statistic based information retrieval method. In the construction method of knowledge base, the common hypothesis is that the emergence of related term is the frequency of simultaneous emergence of a set of documents. Using the subject index file algorithms and the ‘and’ operator of boolean logic based on this hypothesis, this study builds the knowledge base. In this research experiment, a subject of knowledge base is education. Using the book of the Introduction to Education, two experimental knowledge base systems is constructed by the different indexing method. One system has constructed by controlled language indexing method, and another system has constructed by natural language indexing method. The performance of two knowledge base system is evaluated.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between personal traits and information behavior theoretically. Personal traits are often represented by “major type of personality found in an ethnic group or society" and measured by both degrees of affection and dependency in this study. In turn, information behavior is used to include unique features in information needs, information seeking, information source preference, and information searching pattern in library and internet. The data was collected through a survey with 162 college freshmen, and analyzed for both frequency test and Chi-square test. The major research result shows that dependency rather than affection has a statistically meaningful relation with information behavior, in particular, information needs and source preference. Also made are several methodological suggestions for further research.

Abstract

At present there is a increasing interest on dyslexia, not only medical science, psychology and linguistics but also special education studies in Korea. Unfortunately that is not yet in library and information sciences. This study is intended to develop the service model of the public libraries for dylexics in Korea. In order to accomplish the intention, the service models of the public libraries are benchmarked in the northern European countries, namely, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. The service model developed in the study is applicable in school and university libraries as well.

Abstract

Reference services that use e-mail to receive reference questions and provide responses were developed as early digital reference services in the library field. However, librarians and users found that e-mail based reference services had some weak points when compared with traditional face-to-face reference services. As a result, libraries have started to create real-time reference services, which are similar to traditional face-to-face reference services through the use of synchronous chat software. Such chat reference services are focus of this paper. This paper approaches chat reference services as one of the services provided by libraries. Based on the understandings of the unique characteristics of services and the concept of “service quality”, this paper tries to suggest appropriate marketing strategies of chat reference services.

Abstract

This is an exploratory study targeting initial users to evaluate the usability of an aggregator-supplied full-text database and to analyze the differences in task performance and perceptions based on participant characteristics. The differences in completion time and perceptions on ease of use, terminology, subject categories and satisfaction were analyzed based on the participant characteristics such as Kolb learning style, gender and participation in user instruction on full-text databases. The results indicated that there was a statistically significant difference in completion time based on the Kolb learning style. Also a statistically significant difference was found in perceptions on ease of use and terminology based on gender. However no statistically significant difference was found in perceptions on the usability of the database based on the participation in user instruction.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to review recent studies on the service quality evaluation of digital libraries and to derive from research trends and several suggestions. Specifically, this paper compared and analyzed recent literatures on e-service quality evaluation of digital libraries in Korea with regard to service quality evaluation models and measure methodologies. Finally, this study offered two important suggestions. The one is the necessity of developing a standardized service quality evaluation model for digital libraries which is customized in korean environment and the other is establishment of development guideline of service quality evaluation for digital libraries.

Abstract

This study develops the LCSI(Library Customer Satisfaction Index) to measure the customer satisfaction of public libraries from 4,540 public library users in Daegu Metropolitan City area. LCSI consists of three variables; service quality divided into three primary dimensions(interaction of personnel), library resources and programs, physical environment and facilities) as independent variables, overall satisfaction and customer complaints as parameter, and customer loyalty as dependent variable. This model calculates LCSI scores at the ratio of 40% in satisfaction index to three dimensions of library service quality, 40% in overall satisfaction, and 20% in customer loyalty.

Abstract

This paper strives to shed a new light on current academic resource sharing initiatives of both Korea Research Foundation(KRF) and Korea Science and Engineering Foundation(KOSEF), and seeks the measure to administer information resource effectively for a unified organization, which will launch soon, through the comparison and scrutiny, and analyses of strength and weakness on current projects. It first of all attempts to draw outcomes and suggestions on the basis of issues and implications identified through the exhaustive as-is analyses in the aspects of management, service, and infrastructure of academic resource sharing initiatives carried out by each foundations. The unification of projects and information systems are discussed in two aspects, as viewed each significant measures, that is, 1) an organizational aspect in terms to develop a new academic and research information service through the unification of operation systems related to information service project of each foundation; 2) An Initiative toward the integrated service via the unification of scattered individual unit systems in each foundation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of ‘The Big Read(TBR)' reading initiatives sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts(NEA) in the U.S.A. TBR was originally launched to improve the seriously low level of literary reading among the American adults reported in several NEA reports, and spread to more than 500 communities. The major characteristics of TBR include the following: First, a massive investment of federal funds as well as various private and corporate donations; Second, the strong recognition of libraries as the core of reading activities in communities; Third, the adoption of the model of ‘One Book, One Community' reading promotion campaign; Fourth, the provision of high quality resources for reading activities.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to suggest practical plans to improve the school library consulting, especially in case of a teacher librarian is not assigned. As a result of analyses, consulting through methods of the School Library Assistant Group lacks spontaneity, expertise, council, and independence. Besides, each office of education operates it as a marketing. A main goal of school consulting is to foster independent problem- solving of individual schools. Accordingly, it is necessary to build an union management system, develop a standard staff manual, construct DLS based on-line consulting, and design educational training programs of consultants for its successful consulting.

Abstract

School library concentrates its focus on how information literacy is implemented through the collaborative efforts of classroom teachers and teacher librarian. The role of teacher librarian and the competencies they need in order to succeed have changed over many years. However, current LIS education for teacher librarian has limitations in terms of institution, curriculum. In this research, I designed and implemented an Internet-based educational contents development and evaluation for teacher librarian's competency. This system was development by lecture authoring tool(LectureMAKER v2.0). This study tested the effectiveness of the system was verified by survey by 51 college students. The test paper consisted of 20 items(5 scale) for measuring teaching competencies of college students. This study verified effectiveness of the Internet- Based Educational Contents by two dependent samples t-test, Levene test.

Abstract

This research is about Social Education, Reading Movement and Meaning of the Gyeongseong Library which observe from ethnic viewpoint. The result is same as following. First, The Gyeongseong library is the unique library which korean people build, and they thought very seriously. So, tried to keep this library for a long time. The Gyeongseong library supplied knowledge to Korean, although the life was not long. And, as ethnic business value of the Gyeongseong library was much, too. Second, the Gyeongseong library paid attention to child education and education of women as well as it is our country's first public library. And accomplished social education institution's role. Third, readers' of the library was that man was most and the fair readers was minor part, and student was mainly(distinction of sex and profession tendency). And literature, language study etc. got to read most.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to trace the changes in the curricula of the Departments of Library and Information Science in the past fifty years. Under the assumption that the education for librarians is supposed to be changed by the influences of the various surroundings, the curricula in the 1960s, 1980s and 2000s of the Departments are analyzed. The past data were collected by literature searches and the present ones on the homepages. It was found out that there have been many changes along with constancies in the curricula. The results are interpreted and some recommendations are suggested.

Abstract

The study analyzes how the curriculum has been changed in 20 year time, from the year of 1991 to 2009, with 5 to 7 year interval. This paper particularly studies on four major projects to compare with; the whole conduction period of the departmental programs(1991), the instruction of college programs(1997), the conduction period of college programs(2004), and the recurrence period to the departmental programs(2009).

This research presents research trends of records and archives management in korea and future development plan by analyzing the distribution of the thesis of the records and archives management journals in Korea according to subjects, issue periods, journals and researchers. The summary of the research is as follows. First, the core subjects of records and archives management research in Korea have been identified as law, establishment/policy, preservation and electronic records management, and it has been identified that the subject fields have come diverse thanks to the establishment of Public Records Management Act. Second, it has been proved that the productivity of research thesis of records and archives management in Korea increases as time goes by, and, especially, it improved by a big margin during 1997-2001. Third, the subjects of records and archives management are generally comprehensive, although there are differences in the subject fields among the thesis that have been researched.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the recognition of those majoring Library & Information Science on the jobs that they can get and want to work for, employment requirements and their preparation, to identify problems and to suggest how to improve current status. To this end, the jobs and employment rate reported by most of the Depts. of Library & Information Science and the preferred jobs and preparation to those majoring library and information were surveyed with 107 students studying in the Dept. of Library & Information Science in the K University as the subjects. According to the results, 49 jobs were identified as the jobs that those majoring Library & Information Science could get into. In the 1st to 20th job ranking groups, 82.1% of all identified jobs, librarian job took lower ranking as 29.2% while other jobs accounted for 52.9%. However, among the jobs from the 1st to 20th ranking accounting for 96% of all jobs that the subjects wanted to have, the librarian job took 45.8% and other jobs 50.6%, which suggested that the preference on librarian job was slightly increased among the jobs that the subjects wanted to have. Furthermore, the employment requirements were classified into religion, language, scholastic achievement, certification and experience. In accordance with investigation on requirements from employment announcement, 92% were in the generally acceptable level or insufficient level. On the basis of such results, it is suggested to introduce a variety of jobs to students and to provide Case-by-Case employment guidance for improvement of employment rate and social capability of students.

Abstract

The supply of public libraries in Korea has been rapidly improving because of the recent increase for cultural demands and revitalization of the local culture. This paper aims to analyze the efficiency about 565 public libraries using Clustering DEA/AHP(CDA) model. This model is employed the efficiency analysis in order to incorporate project irreversibility and division due to the limit of resources spending. The results shows that the public libraries are divided into three groups which are large size libraries(Group 1), middle size libraries(Group 2) and small size libraries(Group 3). Their average efficiency was found as 0.89, 0.72 and 0.60 each.
