Abstract

The purposes of this article are to explore the current situation and problems of user education in Korean libraries, and to seek some feasible solutions to establish user education as a library service. To the end, the main focus of discussion is on identifying both current situation and special features in user education of Korean libraries, as compared to those of the U.S. libraries. Also followed is a comparative discussion on the formal education systems to educate instruction librarians and the activities of professional associations to train instruction librarians between Korea and the U.S. The final suggestion is given regarding the obligations that Korean LIS scholars, professional library associations, and individual librarians should fulfill to establish user education as a healthy library service, which is suitable for Korean library situations.

Abstract

Successful reading instruction of teacher librarian should be to identify the reading characteristics of students. Nevertheless, there are insufficient tools for to identify the reading characteristics. Thus, this study propose the reading flow type classification and test instruments reading flow using structure equation modeling. In order to verify the reading flow type, this study established 4 temporary model(Warner, Dunn & Dunn, MBTI, flow construction), conformed using AMOS structure equation modeling. The most fit model of 4 temporary model were conformed flow construction. Test instruments for reading flow was developed based on conformed flow construction. Suggested reading flow type classification consist of 16 styles in four dimensions. Reading flow test instruments consist of 28 item styles in four dimensions. The data for this study re-used 1,836 students questionary for prior paper of this researcher.

Abstract

This work investigated the social, cultural, and economical impacts of the services that S Children's Library provides to local community and its residents. In this study I analyzed the user statistics by using Korean Library Automation System III, practiced a comparative analysis with other libraries over circulation efficiency, and reviewed the user's evaluation through user survey. The achievement of this study is to find out the value of S Children's Library by verifying the service status of S Children's Library based on the analyzed data, assessing the role and meaning of the children's library within the community, and measuring the economical contribution through user evaluation.

Abstract

The success or failure of the public library system depends upon the effective management of the human resources. It means that public library’s staff is the most important resource in the operation and delivery of services. In order to provide the best service to the community, therefore, it is necessary to maintain excellent staff to make effective use of the information resources of the library and to meet the demands of the community. The goal of this study is to compare and analyse the staff standards and guidelines of public libraries in international organizations(IFLA/ UNESCO, ISO), major developed countries(USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Japan), and Korea. In addition, the implications derived from this study will be used to provide a valuable theoretical background and rationale for the future research.

Abstract

To achieve public library services for all by including those with disabilities, librarians have to think of them in new ways, and be knowledgeable about various types of disabilities and how to best assist the patron. And public libraries must provide them with services designed by types of disability. This study analyzed the characteristics of Korean disabled people by types of disability and proposed the directions to develop of public library services for people with disabilities by types of disabilities.

Abstract

In order to investigate school libraries' educational impact, two different surveys were conducted. One examined students' school library use in general, including the frequency, purpose, and effect of their library use, and the relative importance of the library in their campus life. The other examined and analyzed their perception of the benefit of the school library to determine if any differences exist among the following three levels: 1) libraries staffed with a dedicated teacher librarian, 2) libraries without a dedicated teacher librarian but active, and 3) libraries without a dedicated teacher librarian and inactive. The questionnaire to survey student's perception had 38 statements. The surveys on student's library use and their perceptions indicated that school libraries benefit the students' reading activities the most. The overall mean of the perception was 3.24(in 5 scales). There were distinct differences among the three levels of school library conditions: the mean for libraries with a teacher librarian scored highest at 3.37, libraries without a teacher librarian but active scored second highest at 3.20, and libraries without a teacher librarian and inactive scored lowest at 3.16. The levels of school library condition suggested direct links to the educational effect on students' achievements.

University libraries in Korea are facing a crisis because of decline of users and librarian reduction from internet development and digital media. To solve this problem, author referred to the literatures on change management of company. Because there are many accumulating knowledge and experiences about company change management. It is necessary to lead the sympathetic sense of crisis by all university librarians. The vision should be made by all librarians’ agreement. But the vision practice is more important than developing. In order to practice the vision, it is more useful to share the leadership with general manager and influential librarians in Korea university libraries. Furthermore, systematic leadership training for librarians is needed than ever.

Abstract

This paper attempts to portray the issues of intellectual freedom that confront librarians in developing collections in libraries. It is observed that the issue has hardly been drawn attention in Korea while, from various cases, concerns about intellectual freedom have been increased in many countries. Situated in this observation, this paper surveys various aspects of endeavors to protect intellectual freedom in information service settings. It is also stressed how such issues as free access to information, freedom to know, information barriers in public sectors, and freedom of expression are addressed in library world. Emphasis was also put on the meaning of intellectual freedom as viewed through some policy documents and guidelines in other countries and its implications.

The purpose of this study is to propose an effective development of teacher librarians' practice teaching and to identify how much teacher librarians' practice teaching affects their expertise in Korea. For this, two research models are constructed. The first model is to analyze the relationship of variables between the effect of practice teaching and the following variables: pretraining, practice program, advisory teacher, training condition and organizational atmosphere. The second model is to analyze how much the practice teaching affects their role perception and expertise compared with training courses and field experiences. The result is as follow: It is the training program that greatly affects teacher librarians' practice teaching among those variables. And the practice teaching has a positive effect on the ability of role performance. According to the above result, the practice teaching is effective in developing teacher librarians' expertise. And more systematic practice teaching program, enough pretraining and the efforts of advisory teacher are necessary to enhance the effect of teacher librarians' practice teaching.

Abstract

This study is to suggest the ways to make the education in Library and Information Science more professional and more practical by going through the problems in the curriculum of Library and Information Science in the aspect of ‘reference service'. For this purpose, the curriculum changes of 32 domestic universities offering Library and Information Science between 2005 and 2009 was analyzed and compared with the current situation of the U.S. The research has revealed some problems. First of all, it shows that the subjects such as the introduction of or the theory of library and information science still comprise a large portion of the domestic curriculum. Additionally, there seems to be much difference in the number of subjects between the universities. Lastly, there are few subjects which consist of the observation and understanding of the library field, and participation therein. Therefore, to operate the ‘reference service' curriculum effectively, it is necessary to offer courses for understanding the users and subjects and for the reference service. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen the practical education through a close connection with the library field. Finally, it is urgent not only to expand the subjects for improving the ability of user education and communication but also to make the curriculum of each university specialized.

Abstract

This study intends to discuss Korea's LIS education focused on the field of ‘information organization’ in detail. Emphasis was on analyzing the current curriculum in Korea's LIS school and on discussing facing problems and new directions in the education of the field. To the end, this study collected and examined exhaustively the course contents and instruction of the related courses in 32 Korea's LIS schools, and the research papers related to LIS education, especially information organization's education. In addition, American LIS education was analyzed to compare with Korea's. In conclusion, this study suggested that the LIS school education should emerged from excessive emphasis on practical skills and concentrate on the philosophy, principles and the implicit values of information organization.

Abstract

This study selected Korea and China-related subject headings among all names contained in Japan 2008 Version of NDLSH, and compared and analyzed the number of headings and the features according to each theme. As the result of analysis, the total number of Korea-related subject headings is 222 including its headings and referent words. At comparing with China-related subject headings, the number of Korea-related subject headings was very small size, and shows many limits in terms of the variety or the specificity of themes. Especially, the facts that ‘Joseon', which is not existed any longer, is used as Korea's nation name, or that Balhae's history is assigned into Chinese history are required to be corrected quickly. Meanwhile, in the China-related subject headings field, multi-racial nation's features are reflected, and are contained many theme names like ancient racial names, each minority's residental area name and its native language which are rarely appeared in Korean theme names field.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current nationwide status of the multicultural and multilingual library services in Korea. To do this, a survey aimed at the public libraries, the non-governmental organizations and the governmental bodies that provided library services with multicultural and multilingual materials was conducted. Also, 15 librarians and the persons in charge were interviewed. As a result of this study, some recommendations not only regarding national library policies but also regarding public libraries providing multicultural library services to local users were suggested.

Abstract

This study focuses on whether early childhood education institutes operate libraries and find out if those environments are suitable for reading, and to investigate on educations on reading by utilizing libraries and how it's perceived by surveying and analyzing. As a result, it was found that there were higher rate of institutions with active libraries and as for the reasons for needing an assigned librarian were found to be in the order of ‘to educate young children for reading' and ‘for the systematic management of books'. Points of necessity for the efficient reading education was found to be ‘establishing of staff system with professional knowledge' and ‘development of reading education programs.'

Abstract

This study aims to investigate characteristics of most clicked documents of Naver's universal search service. In particular, this study analyzed characteristics of most clicked documents such as click ratio, collection distribution, and yearly distribution. Also, clicked documents were evaluated in terms of relevance, credibility, and currency. In conducting this study, query logs and click logs of unified search service were analyzed. The results of this study show that most clicks occurred in blog collection and average click concentration rate reached almost 50%. Also, the relevance and currency of most clicked documents were quite high, but credibility of these documents were on average level. The results of this study can be implemented to the portal's effective development of searching algorithm and interface.

Some academic libraries have paper writing education as part of information literacy education. Paper writing education includes the following contents; choice of subject, information type and information location, information retrieval, citation and bibliography writing, plagiarism type and(a front) cover․table of contents writing. This study investigated paper writing education of the academic libraries that have it. Upon investigation, the academic libraries put a high importance on information type, location and retrieval. On the other hand, they lacked of the education on citation and bibliography writing, especially plagiarism. And some of the academic libraries had not the education on a choice of subject and(a front) cover․a table of contents writing. Improvement of teaching method was required. This study finding will give effective material to the academic libraries having education and will have education.

Google, an internet search service with extensive user base, has provided Book Search service. Google has pursued collaboration with publishers and libraries to obtain content for Book Search service; publisher community for the purpose of sourcing the books with copyrights, and the libraries for the purpose of digitizing their collections and also utilizing already digitized resources. Google Book Search Service has evoked significant controversy because of the potential monopoly problems and its risk, accompanied by Google's huge influence and broad user spectrum. This study, thus, suggests the countermeasures that library community should prepare in order to cope with the Google Book Search.

Public libraries face various changes and challenges in the knowledge society of the 21st century. The necessity of introducing ‘marketing' concept into the management of public libraries is increasing. This study focuses on ‘Family Place Library' program among the children services of public libraries in the United States. ‘Family Place Library' is the library program for the youngest children and families, which has been spread over 300 public libraries of USA until February, 2011. The researcher did participation observation and in-depth interview at the libraries which are the main cases for ‘Family Place Libraries' in New York, USA. And the researcher analysed the content of the program and did in-depth interviews with related professionals in and out of libraries over many states of USA. Based on the results of this study, the researcher suggested marketing strategies for the management of public libraries.
