본 연구는 낙인과 전문적 도움추구 행동들 간의 관계를 살펴봄으로써 보다 많은 사람들이 전문적 도움을 받을 수 있도록 도울 수 있는 요인을 밝히고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 사회적 낙인, 자기 낙인, 전문적 도움추구 태도, 전문적 도움추구 의도 간에 어떤 관계가 있는지를 알아보기 위해, 전문적 도움추구 태도가 사회적 낙인과 전문적 도움추구 의도 간의 관계, 그리고 자기 낙인과 전문적 도움추구 의도 간의 관계를 매개하는지 살펴보았다. 대학생 394명이 사회적 낙인, 자기 낙인, 전문적 도움추구 태도, 전문적 도움추구 의도를 측정하기 위한 척도들에 응답하게 하였으며, 변인들 간의 관계를 살펴보기 위해 상관관계 분석과 구조방정식 모형 검증을 하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 전문적 도움추구 태도는 사회적 낙인과 전문적 도움추구 의도 간의 관계를 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 전문적 도움추구 태도는 자기 낙인과 전문적 도움추구 의도 간의 관계를 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 이 결과를 통해 전문적 도움을 구하는 것에 대한 사회적 낙인과 자기 낙인을 높게 지각할수록 전문적 도움을 구하는 것에 대해 부정적인 태도를 가지게 되고, 결국 전문적 도움추구를 회피하게 된다는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 이 결과는 낙인과 전문적 도움추구 태도, 의도 간의 관계에서 우리나라와 미국 간에 문화적 차이가 있음을 보여주고 있다.
This study examined the relations among social stigma, self-stigma, attitude toward seeking professional help, and intention to seek professional help. First, attitude toward seeking professional help was hypothesized to mediate between social stigma and intention to seek professional help. The second hypothesis was that attitude toward seeking professional help would mediate between self-stigma and intention to seek professional help. The participants were 394 university students. For the data analyses, correlations among variables were calculated and structural equation models were tested. The results indicated that attitude toward seeking professional help mediated between social stigma and intention to seek professional help; attitude toward seeking professional help also mediated between self-stigma and intention to seek professional help. These results indicate that perceptions of social and self stigma eventually caused avoidance of professional help. These results also showed that there was a cultural difference between U.S. and South Korea in the model of relations among stigma, attitude toward professional help, and intention to seek professional help.
