본 연구는 농촌지역 다문화가정의 상호작용을 살펴보고 결혼이민여성의 경험의 본질을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 경기도 이천의 결혼이민여성 3명과 배우자, 가족, 총 9명을 참여자로 질적 사례연구를 수행하였다. 심층면접과 집단면접, 글쓰기 등을 통해 수집한 자료는 결혼이민여성들의 적응경험을 이해하는데 핵심적인 공통 주제영역에 따라 사례별로 분석하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다문화가정 부부의 결혼 동기는 경제적인 필요성 이외에도 개인적인 경험과 다양한 욕구가 반영된 결과였다. 둘째, 결혼이민여성이 지각하는 적응상의 문제들은 가정과 사회에서 만족스러운 정체감과 위치를 구축하는 과정에서의 어려움들로, 관계설정에서의 스트레스에 해당하였다. 셋째, 적응상의 문제에 대한 결혼이민여성들의 반응은 저항하기, 수용하기, 환경개선을 요구하기 등으로 차이가 있었다. 넷째, 결혼이민여성이 경험하는 어려움에 대한 가족들의 반응은 대체적으로 미온적이거나 소극적인 형태였으며, 적응을 아내가 감당해야 할 몫으로 보는 경향이 있었다. 연구결과에서 드러난 결혼이민여성들의 경험을 바탕으로, 이들의 적응에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인들에 대해 논의하였다. 본 연구는 우리 문화가 현실에 어떻게 반영되는지를 현장중심으로 탐색한 귀납적 연구이며, 이를 바탕으로 상담연구와 실제에서 패러다임 전환의 필요성을 입증했다는데 의의가 있다.
This study describes the processes of adaptation foreign wives experience and how they are dealing with the major issues in a multicultural family setting. I approach the issues through qualitative case study, interviewing nine participants. The major findings are as follows: First, the motives for the couples to choose international marriage were not only economic needs but also personal experiences as well as various desires. Second, these women's difficulties in the course of enculturation arose from the tension of the relationship. Third, there were remarkable contrasts between their stress responses. Forth, in-laws were for the most part not very helpful in overcoming the marriage difficulties migrant women face. Fifth, risk and positive factors of their adaptation process were discussed.
