Development and Validation of Traumatized Self-System Scale

Abstract

If human beings have experienced repeatedly psychological trauma in interpersonal relationship across their life span, their basic self-system could be disrupted. The current study investigated whether repetitive interpersonal trauma leads to significant disruption in individual's self-system, which is different from that caused by simple trauma or single event interpersonal trauma. The Traumatized Self-System Scale(TSSS) was developed and validated in the first study. In the following study, significant differences in impairments of self-consistency, self-integration, and self-destructive behavior were found between participants experiencing repetitive interpersonal trauma and those experiencing other trauma. Such results implied that it is necessary to assess and adopt distinct intervention strategies according to the types of interpersonal trauma in order to recover a self-system effectively. Implications and limitations of the current study are discussed.
