Comparing 4-Statuses and 6-Statuses of Career Identity: Focusing on Searching Moratorium

Abstract

This research was performed to identify career identity status by comparing 4-factors and 6-factors models, and to examine the effects of career identity status on career attitude maturity. The total of 429 Korean college students participated in this study. The results showed as follows. First, career identity status of college students was divided into four clusters by four factors. Each career identity status was almost identical with the results of Marcia’s (1980) study. Second, career identity status of college students was divided into six clusters by six factors. In addition to Marcia’s statuses, two more statuses (searchingmoratoriumandundifferentiatingstatuses) were identified. Third, 6-statuses ware better for explaining individual’s career identity development than 4 -statuses. Fourth, the levels of career attitude maturity ware significantly different among career identity statuses. Specifically, individuals in achievement status showed the highest scores on career attitude maturity followed by those in foreclosure status.
