Abstract

The purose of this study is to show the way how a theoretical study in developmental psychology can be applied to a specific purpose in related area. We reviewed the studies of Hangul reading development as an example, and found that the key point in Hangul acquisition is to acquire grapheme-phoneme correspondence rules(G-P rule). However, it is hard to aware the G-P rule because graphemes and phonemes are part of gestalt-like Kulja and syllable. Children discover the word level, syllable level, and phoneme level of orthographic recognition unit in this order. Children need to acquire two kinds of knowledge, metaknowledge and specific knowledge. The major part of Hangul reading program focused the way how to provide two kinds of knowledge in each orthographic recodniton level in order to disamalgam the syllable and Kulja into phonemes and graphemes.
