Abstract

The purpose of this study is to propose new directions for depression research. We regarded depression as a behavioral scientific concept and presented new research directions in three ways. As Salman(1995) mentioned, depression is defined as a state of unhappy mood and avoidance of doing behaviors. From the behavioral science point of view, depression is a quantifiable concept on a continuum from lower levels to higher levels. Based on the perspective, we proposed three new directions for research. First, it is necessary to discriminate between normal depression and dysfunctional depression(including clinical depression and subclinical depression) existing on a continuum. Second, it is desirable to reflect subtle differences among various cultures and subcultures in the depression conceptualization, because it is possible to find differences in conceptualization of depression, coping strategies, and so on depending on cultures. Lastly, we proposed that not only negative cognition and affect but also positive cognition and affect are considered in the basic conceptualization of depression, because negative cognition/affect and positive cognition/affect are independent at large. And then we discussed implications for scale development implementing the new directions, because a scale is imperative to measure depression concepts experientially in the future.

Abstract

We employed meta-analysis to identify associations between self-compassion and various psychological variables using Korean literature. Various psychological variables were categorized by mutual consent of researchers who referred to the relative previous researches and hand books of psychology. We gathered 114 dissertations and journal articles published in Korea until now, including a total of 423 effect sizes, and calculated mean effect sizes using CMA2. We found large effect sizes for the relationships between self-compassion and positive psychological variables group of r = .45, and between self-compassion and negative psychological variables group of r = -.44. In addition, sub forms of positive psychological variables group and negative psychological variables group had statistically significant relationships with self-compassion. According to the results, we determined that self-compassion is an important explanatory and meaningful variable in understanding psychology of Korean. This study could help explore and develop the evidence for self-compassion in psychology.

Abstract

Recently, there has been an ongoing controversy surrounding replication crisis in psychology. Some of popular experiments such as priming effect failed to be replicated. And subsequent large-scale replication projects of psychological studies revealed that the success rate of replication was less than ideal, which threatened the status of psychology as science. Through the course of mass debate, problems such as null hypothesis statistical testing, questionable research practices, and publication bias were discussed as causes of current replication crisis. Accordingly, solutions (use of confidence interval, effect size, meta-analysis, Bayesian statistics, and efforts to increase transparency in methodology) were proposed in order to enhance reproducibility of psychological research. Depending on how it is resolved, the present crisis in replication also holds opportunity for future development of psychology. Therefore, we attempted to introduce how replication crisis unfolded in psychology and to comprehensively review causes and potential solutions in the hope of establishing basic ground for further discussion in Korea.

Abstract

This paper is aimed to offer a comprehensive overview of research on source monitoring. Source monitoring is the set of processes involved in specifying about the origins of memories. After proposing the theory of source monitoring framework in 1993, numerous empirical studies have examined the source monitoring tasks in cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, and clinical psychology. The recent studies focused on the process of the self functioning. However, there have been only a few empirical literatures studied using the task and explored the theoretical relationship with other psychological constructs in Korea. This study guides a better understanding of the basic concept and representative empirical studies of source monitoring. Further, this study reviews the clinical studies by examining the relationship between source monitoring and psychological disorders. In conclusion, this study proposes future directions of the empirical studies on schema bias of source monitoring task as discussing the suggestion of the previous studies.
