Abstract

According to the library act, the regional central library is not only a public library but also a library representing the metropolitan municipalities in Korea. But the status and role of current representative libraries are so weak that they are nothing more than large public libraries. Focusing on realistic vulnerability, this study analyzed the major weaknesses and limitations of regional central libraries and suggested ways to normalize legal positions and operations in terms of revising and supplementing the library act, restructuring and strengthening the tasks to be performed, and expanding the manpower and operating organization directly connected with core competencies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the components of school library laws of Korea and Japan. The laws of two nations were legislated by the members of the National Assembly, and NGO contributed significantly to the legislative process. The common parts of the two laws are objectives, definitions, responsibilities of nations, establishments, tasks, human resources, collaborative networks, and education, etc. For the task of school libraries, Korean law emphasizes the function of education, while the Japan law focuses on the basic duties of school libraries. In terms of human resources, school libraries in Korea can have a teacher librarian, a practice teacher, or a librarian, but in Japan, they can have either a teacher librarian or a school librarian. The Korea law specifies the aspects of facilities and materials, but the Japan law does not. Finally, for the educational role, the Korean libraries have reading and information literacy training that are parts of school curriculum, while the Japan libraries have only a library use guidance program and does not include reading education.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze types and features social issues about the Gyeongju earthquakes 2016, South Korea. The specific purpose is to identify types of topics related to Gyeongju Earthquakes, changes of topics over time, and the differences of topics depending on the each type of newspapers. According to the result of topic modeling, 55 topics were extracted. The result of this study is following these. First, the main topics have been changed with the course of time. In September, various topics were emerged, specifically urgent issues was found during two weeks after the first earthquake. After October, topics about social problems derived from the earthquakes received much attention at that time. Topics related to safety problems about nuclear plant have steadily found in all period. Second, topics varied depending whether the newspaper is national or regional. Also, differences of topics were found when dividing the newspapers by their characteristics considered conservative or liberal.

Abstract

School Library is both a space and a place. The difference between space and place is the same as in the difference between house and home. Space may be described in terms of physical shape. Place is concept that formulated by personal experience. The social and cognitive developmental stages of elementary, middle and high school students are different, so the placeness or sense of place may be different. The purpose of this study is to figure out the differences in elementary and secondary school student's formative factors of placeness and examine the process that those factors are connected to the results of the user behavioral intentions through the medium of place attachment, place value perception. The data are collected from 590 students and analyzed by SPSS 19 and AMOS 19. The results of this study are as follows. The physical, active·behavioral and psychological factors affect on placeness formation of elementary and secondary school students in school libraries. Elementary school students are significantly affected more by physical factors, active·behavioral factors than middle and high school students. This study confirmed the process that those factors are connected to the results of the user behavior through the medium of place attachment, place value perception.

Abstract

As a part of feasibility study of constructing Geumsaem library, the purpose of this study is to examine the result of economic feasibility analysis on constructing the library. In order to achieve the purpose, we evaluated policy relevance, investigated people's demand for constructing the library, and examined the result of economic feasibility analysis. As the tools of economical efficiency analysis, we used the techniques like cost-benefit ratio, net present value and internal rate of return to analyse the economic feasibility, and we estimated the amount of benefit by contingent valuation method. As the result of this study, cost-benefit ratio for constructing Geumsaem library was turned out as 1.28, and we could get an assessment of positive economic feasibility about constructing the library.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to propose the developmental direction for small libraries based on a set of various situational analysis of small libraries in Seoul. By analyzing the operational status of the autonomous regions of different operating methods, we also pursued qualitative enhancement of small libraries by autonomous district by proposing optimized operation methods. As a consequence of the study, it was analyzed that the public and private libraries need to be distinguished in consideration of the characteristics of operation according to the operating entity rather than uniform budget support and guidance management. That is, the small libraries scattered throughout Seoul were founded by the principal of their establishment for the purpose of providing knowledge information and reading culture service within the public activity area. Therefore, if Seoul intervenes and manages under the current situation, where the libraries are operating independently in accordance with the purpose of establishment, regardless of whether they meet the user requirements or not in terms of quality or quantity, various problems may be caused. In this background, it seems appropriate to restrict the library management in line with relevant regulations.

Abstract

This study is to analyze teacher librarians’ awareness about the performance-based pay system, their job satisfaction and the relationship between the two in an attempt to help make the pay system serve as catalyst in creating a positive competitive climate in the teacher community and boosting the qualifications of teacher librarian. As a result, the teacher librarians’ grades were 4.1% in S, 27.5% in A, 62.5% in B, and 5.9% in the exception of incentive. The teacher l ibrarians’ awareness of the performance-based pay system level was only 2.15 point out of 7, and their job satisfaction level was 4.60 out of 7. The teacher librarians’ were more satisfied with performance-based pay, participation, fairness of evaluation criteria, fairness of evaluation process and results. In conclusion, higher awareness of the teacher librarians’ performance incentives showed higher job satisfaction. And we might be able to suggest the improvement plan for teacher librarian evaluation in teacher performance system.

Abstract

In order for preemptive response and prevention against disasters, it is necessary to systematically collect, preserve, manage, and utilize the information resources of records related with disaster safety. Therefore, this study analyzed the types and status of text-based document archives among the records information resources which were published and produced by the disaster safety-related institutions via online. Detail types analysis of disasters in document archives also was conducted. Based on filed interviews, the actual users ' requirements for the disaster safety information archives are converged. The ultimate goal of this study is to establish a basis for building of disaster safety information archives by deriving improved management strategies of disaster safety records resources.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop an automatic classification system for recommending appropriate books of 9 enneagram personality types, using book information data reviewed by librarians. Data used for this study are book review of 501 recommended titles for children and young adults from National Library for Children and Young Adults. This study is implemented on the assumption that most people prefer different types of books, depending on their preference or personality type. Performance test for two different types of machine learning models, nonlinear kernel and linear kernel, composed of 360 clustering models with 6 different types of index term weighting and feature selections, and 10 feature selection critical mass were experimented. It is appeared that LIBLINEAR has better performance than that of LibSVM(RBF kernel). Although the performance of the developed system in this study is relatively below expectations, and the high level of difficulty in personality type base classification take into consideration, it is meaningful as a result of early stage of the experiment.

Abstract

During the Joseon period, space, organization, and personnel were essential in order to perform the administrative work for local governance. For that reason local government records were created, managed, and stored as the results of its administration. Buildings and spaces of local government office can be divided in 3 sections such as 1) administrator’s space for governance and living; 2) petty officials’ administrative space; 3) granary space for store rations and grains paid as tax. Because of its grand scale, a local government office had considerably complex organizational structure. In order to survey the types and forms of local government records, focusing on six transition documents (junggi, 重記) in the 19th Century Yeongnam Region, this study selected the record type documents in the item lists of the transition documents, then, classified the record type documents which were managed by the organizations in local government offices with several types: program of items (jeolmok, 節目), list of personnel or land (an, 案), register (daejang, 大帳), certified copy (deungnok, 謄錄) and muniment (wanmun, 完文), and examined these documents.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze user behaviors of books in detail based on circulation data in an academic library. It analyzes circulation patterns of books for ten years from 2006 to 2015, which are surprisingly similar every year. Each pattern follows ‘Loan books 20/50 rule’ that 20% core collection occupies 50% of its circulation every year. This clarifies users’ circulation patterns are highly consistent and very expectable. Also, using the cumulative distribution of book age, it defines the half-life of books and suggests the mathematical formula to measure it. Circulation patterns of the whole loan book and core collection for ten years are very different in terms of subjects, user groups, and divisions. This indicates that core collection plays a significant role in analyzing circulation statistics and usage patterns for the efficient collection development in the future.

Abstract

As a first step in developing a more effective and robust approach to faculty research performance assessment, this study analyzed the existing faculty research assessment methods by comparing Korean universities’ research evaluation standards, National Research Foundation of Korea’s (KRF) standard for assessing research proposals, and various bibliometric measures. The study data included research evaluation standards of KRF along with 27 Korean universities with Library and Information Science (LIS) department, and the publication data of 183 LIS faculties in Korean universities from 2001 to 2015, which consisted of 3,863 papers 16,978 citations. After the comparative analysis of research evaluation standards, the study examined the rankings of institutions and faculty produced by applying the collected standards and bibliometric metrics to the publication data. The study showed that Korean university standards for research evaluation, which aim to consider both productivity and impact of faculty research, differ from similar bibliometric measures such as h-index, and the difference could significantly impact the assessment of faculty research performance

Abstract

Despite the close relatedness of the factors for reading motivation and book selection, few researchers have examined these factors together in a single study. To deal with this dearth of research, this study was designed to explore factors of motivation for reading and book selection of high school students comprehensively. The authors conducted in-depth interviews with fifteen high school students and analyzed their responses in order to identify the meaningful factors. The findings of this study reveal the five major factors: (1) characteristics of information sources, (2) school and learning environment, (3) individual factors, (4) home environment, and (5) social environment. In particular, the five types of factors seem to have a combined effects on reading motivation and book selection. The findings also suggest that one’s reading motivation is a prerequisite for his/her book selection; however, the reading motivation does not always lead to book selection. The results of this study may deepen our understanding of reading behavior of high school students, which can be used in reading instruction and designing new programs.

Abstract

With development of web, web-archival information services using research records are diversified because values of the records increase in terms of preservation, use and share. Thus, it is necessary to understand and discuss current situation and improvement in future of web-archival information service. This study develops evaluation measures for web-archival information service based on DigiQUAL and NDSLQual, reflecting characteristics of research records. To confirm the validity of the proposed measures, questionnaires were built based on the indicators and distributed to real users of NTIS, which is a case of web-archival information services using research records. Finally, this study analyzes problems of web-archival information services using research records and recommend improvement methods.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to establish the classification principle of archives for the May 18th democratic uprising in terms of preservation and utilization of it and to develop an integrated classification system for it. For this purpose, it was carried out by the previous research on the classification of records and institutional case analysis. Also, we developed an integrated provenance-based classification system based on the practical analysis on the data held in 3 representative institutions in Gwangju. This classification system was proposed by facets of 'provenance-material-period- media- subject' type. We also proposed the collection-based integrated classification system that reflects on the expansion of archivists’ role and the trend of times.

This paper attempts to develop reading psychology coaching program that applies Adler’s individual psychology for female teenage runaways who live in adolescent shelters located in Yongin and Siheung in Korea and examine its effect. For this purpose, the study implemented 120-minute reading psychology coaching program for a total of 12 sessions during the period August 9th in 2016 to October 30th in 2016. For verification of the effects, this study conducted a comparison analysis on the pre and post-hoc test of life style scales and inferiority complex symptom scales, output reports in each session, and writing materials. In the study results, the reading psychology coaching program that applies Adler’s individual psychology showed positive effects on female adolescents in shelters.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to measure the extent of collaboration by comparing team size patterns of Korean LIS journals with international LIS journals. For the sample dataset, the top 30 ranked international journals in the field of LIS were selected using the Scimago Journal Rank (SJR), and 4 Korean LIS journals were selected for the years between 2010-2016. The size of the team who authored Korean journal articles were collected from the RISS database, while the size of team who authored international journal articles from the top LIS journals were collected using the Scopus database. The result of this study shows that the most common team size ranged from one member team to three member teams. Overall, the collaborative team size in international journals was higher than Korean journals. In particular, one member team was the most common team size in Korean journals, whereas two members team was most common in the international journals. At the subject level, the most common team size was one team member in the subject area of Library Related, while the most common team size was three team members in the subject area of Science/Engineering. The result of this study suggests that within LIS, the size of teams may vary considerably due to differences in subject areas.

Abstract

The primary purpose of this study is to identify the educational contents of the research paper writing program. In addition, this searches for the appropriate application method as information literacy instructional course. For clarifying and supporting the purpose, this study analyzes the expository texts with the seven kinds of published references book on research paper writing program. As the results of examination, the study reveals that they are made up with seven important contents. Evidently, this analysis makes up for the information literacy strategy to intensify the information literacy instructional course. Convincingly, we propose the educational contents which contain ideas of ‘making research plan,’ ‘managing information,’ and ‘writing essay’ in order to optimize for the current school library environment.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the significance of homework help service as a library program to support young people in the community and investigate the characteristics of homework help services in U.S. public libraries. It reviews the previous literature on the cases and trend of homework help services in U.S. public libraries. It also investigates the practice and characteristics of homework help services using an email survey targeting public libraries that offer the services. The results are analyzed in terms of the user, collection, space, public relations and human resources of homework help services. This study may contribute to eliciting the service plan on homework help service in its planning and implementation stage in public libraries.
