Development and Validation of Self-Rated Mentalization Questionnaire

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Self-rating Scale of Mentalization(SRMQ). The surveys were administerd either online or on paper with 1079 individuals over the age of 18 living in the Seoul and Gyeonggi-do areas. A pool of 25 items was developed and factor analysis supported the extraction of four related factors: reflection of the self and other, deficit of affection awareness, absolute certainty about other’s mind, concrete thinking. The model fit was examined using confirmatory factor analysis. Analysis of correlation, group differences, regression and cluster analysis were performed for validation. The following additional instruments were used: Self-Rated Mentalization Questionnaire(SRMQ), Encounter in Close Relationship Scale-Revised(ECR-R), Personality Assessment Inventory Borderline Features Subscale(PAI-BOR), Symptom Check list(SCL-47), Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale(PANAS), Mentalization Questionnaire(MZQ). The results provided adequate validation of the SRMQ. Implications, limitations and directions for the future research are discussed.
