This study aimed to explore how libraries can secure their status as key institutions in addressing regional depopulation by transforming their roles in terms of securing cultural resources. To achieve this, the study examined the laws and policies designed to solve social issues related to population risks and explored the applicability of libraries. It also analyzed specific cases of public libraries established in regions facing the threat of depopulation to identify the positive impacts libraries can have in addressing regional extinction. Based on these findings, strategic responses for public libraries in the era of regional depopulation were derived. The specific strategies drawn from this study are as follows: First, libraries should be established as cultural infrastructures that revitalize the cultural, economic, and social vitality of the region. Second, libraries should provide services to mitigate the inequality of opportunities caused by regional depopulation. Third, they should operate programs that address aging and attract external populations to help stimulate the local economy. Fourth, differentiated and specialized libraries that reflect the identity of each region should be built, with the aim of branding these libraries to contribute to regional economic revitalization. Fifth, mobile libraries should be actively utilized to realize the vision of a livable regional era. Lastly, libraries should serve as spaces for solving local issues by reinforcing governance systems that focus on the participation of local residents and activists in addressing community challenges.
The purpose of this study is to analyze high school teachers’ perceptions on the importance of school libraries’ educational programs for inquiry based learning International Baccalaureate(IB) emphasizes on IBDP and IBCP. Using survey methodology the study collected 90 responses from 352 teachers in 49 high schools participating the IB inquiry & action teams from S office of education. Data collected were analyzed using SPSS 29. The results show that, first, teachers’ perceptions on the importance of the function of school libraries and the role of school library staffs according to approaches for teaching and learning(inquiry vs regular practice)did not show significant differences. Second, there was a strong positive linear correlation between the importance of the role of library staffs and the placement of teacher-librarians. Third, the effect of the importance of the role of library staffs on the educational programs of the school libraries was found. Specifically, The perceptions on the importance of school library’s educational programs were influenced by the perceptions on the importance of the role of school library staffs, not by the perceptions on the importance of the function of the library. This suggests the importance of emphasis on the role of library staff to promote collaboration with teachers in teaching for library education, not on managing school libraries. The results of the study will be the basis for identifying and promoting the teachers’ perceptions on the importance the school library’s educational programs for inquiry-based learning.
This study aims to identify the information needs and usage behavior of intellectual property professionals when dealing with patents, trademarks, and design-related tasks and to propose improvements for patent information databases. Based on Leckie’s model of professional information-seeking behavior, an online and offline survey was conducted with 168 respondents, including patent attorneys, intellectual property consultants, developers, administrative managers, and translators. The survey examined key information sources, types of information, usage behaviors, and the degree of information needs being met. The results showed that there was minimal variation in information usage behaviors among intellectual property professionals based on their job characteristics. However, there were differences in the use of AI-based functions in patent information databases and in the degree to which information needs were met. To improve patent information databases, the study suggests structuring data by linking patent information with market, product, case law, and litigation data, and improving search functionalities.
This study designed and verified a research model that identifies the correlation between the quality characteristics of the autonomous district integrated library homepage and the intention to use it by applying the extended technology acceptance model. To this end, a survey was conducted targeting users of 8 public libraries in Gyeonggi Province and 15 public libraries in Seoul, and a valid sample of 256 copies was used in the study. The analysis results showed that service quality affects perceived ease of use, and system quality and information quality affect perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. In addition, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use affect the intention to use it. These results show that contact with users through the homepage is a place of communication that reflects programs or user opinions. The significance of this study lies in suggesting the direction of the construction of public library homepage environments and services at the national and regional levels in the future.
This study aims at examining how social networks influence graduate students’ learning flow, academic persistence intention, and research productivity. The findings reveal significant correlations among the networks of friendship, trust, and academic help. In particular, regression analysis indicated that the outdegree centrality in the friendship network positively influences academic persistence intention. Additionally, certain students exhibited high centrality across all three networks, suggesting that they actively engage in giving and receiving academic help while maintaining close and trust relationships. To gain a deeper understanding of the network analysis results, in-depth interviews were conducted with individuals playing central roles within the networks. This study emphasizes the importance of social networks in promoting graduate students’ academic success and suggests strategies for targeted support based on these findings.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of a school library-based picture book reading program designed for multicultural students on their language abilities, emotional stability, and library usage behaviors. To accomplish this, a tailored picture book reading program for multicultural students was developed and implemented in an elementary school setting, utilizing qualitative research methods to observe and describe students’ experiences. The program spanned 20 sessions integrated into the curriculum and involved 13 multicultural students from three second-grade classes. The primary findings are as follows: First, participating students enhanced their Korean vocabulary and background knowledge needed for learning through picture books, which also fostered emotional stability. The program contributed to improving students’ social interaction skills and shaping a positive attitude toward school life. Second, after the program, students visited the library more frequently, with increases in book borrowing and reading activities. Many students voluntarily borrowed books read during class or recommended them to peers, indicating that they began to perceive the library as a rich space for learning and exploration.
As of the end of 2023, there were a total of 1,271 public libraries in Korea, with an average of 5.6 per basic local government. Nevertheless, there are few libraries that can be considered as landmarks or hotspots, which is to say, libraries that are considered as a must-see pilgrimage for both Koreans and foreigners when visiting and traveling. Therefore, the Fourth Comprehensive Library Advancement Plan (2024-2028), which was established and confirmed by the Committee on Library and Information Policy under the President on May 29, 2024, identified the construction of landmark libraries in connection with culture-oriented urban regeneration and cultural city projects as an implementation task. It is expected that the construction of landmark libraries will be promoted mainly in cultural cities over the next five years. This study presents a scenario for the construction of a landmark library (importance and purpose, evaluation and selection of candidate sites, key roles and expected effects, scale and cost estimation, etc.) based on the results of a survey on the perceptions of D city citizens and S-gu, which is designated as a cultural city as well as a basic local government representing D city, and tourism data for D city. If a landmark library is built near Suseongmot, a hotspot in D city and S-gu, it will not only contribute to the upgrading of S-gu to a top-class library and cultural city in the country, but will also become an attraction for domestic and foreign tourists.
Small libraries function as vital community spaces, offering both cultural and everyday life services to local residents. However, they are increasingly struggling with operational challenges brought on by shifts in library policies and evolving environmental factors. This study seeks to examine the evolving role of small libraries within communities and propose strategies to address these challenges. Using K-gu District as a central case study, the research provides a comprehensive analysis of key operational elements in small libraries and offers solutions aimed at fostering their revitalization. To enhance the operation of small libraries in K-gu District, the study suggests several key strategies: improving the efficiency of operational systems for both public and private small libraries, revising local ordinances related to small libraries, refining the “Small Library Operational Evaluation Indicators” based on a comprehensive survey of current conditions, establishing a life-cycle-based support system for small libraries, and forming a consulting team to provide operational support.

This study aims to develop the online service elements for accessing and utilizing oral history records and content. First, the changing perspectives on access, the hierarchy and types of oral history materials were examined to define the scope of online services. Second, 18 service elements were identified by analyzing 5 guidelines from the Oral History Association. Third, 1 additional element was found from the analysis of online services from 3 domestic institutions and 19 elements were finally proposed. These elements are expected to serve as foundational resources for institutions providing the online service of the oral history records.
This study measured library anxiety among public library users and analyzed which anxiety factors affect user satisfaction and loyalty. To achieve this, the concept of library anxiety was explored, along with previous domestic and international research. Survey questions were developed by incorporating factors from the LibQUAL+ library service quality evaluation model into the existing anxiety scale. A survey was conducted with users from six public libraries in City C, and data analysis identified analysis identified four factors: ‘professional service of staff,’ ‘psychological and emotional perception,’ ‘physical and spatial perception,’ and ‘use of library resources and programs.’ Among these, ‘physical and spatial perception’ positively influenced both satisfaction and loyalty, while ‘professional service of staff’ only significantly affected satisfaction. These findings suggest the importance of public libraries as comfortable and familiar spaces, emphasizing that improvements in the physical environment and service quality can reduce anxiety and enhance user satisfaction and loyalty. This study provides significant policy implications for improving public library operations and services by identifying key factors that reduce library anxiety and increase user satisfaction and loyalty.
This study analyzed the factors that affect the intention to use when users want to accept AI book recommendation services provided by public libraries from the perspective of an Expanded Technology Acceptance Model and Diffusion of Innovation Theory for the use and diffusion of AI book recommendation services in public libraries. It was verified that perceived usefulness had a positive effect on the intention to use and perceived ease of use had a positive effect on the intention to use through the mediated effect of perceived usefulness. Through indirect effect analysis, innovativeness, self-efficiency, and digital literacy were verified as antecedent variables of perceived usefulness. Compatibility, individual perception of AI, and social impact were verified as antecedent variables of perceived ease of use. However, through total effect analysis, it was found that innovativeness had a negative (-) effect on the intention to use. And the intention to provide personal information only had a direct effect, and self-efficiency and digital literacy had a indirect effect on the intention to use. Compatibility is the most influential factor on the intention to use. In addition, it was verified that there were differences in the perceived usefulness of the AI book recommendations according to the category of innovation adopters, and late majority recognized the usefulness of the AI book recommendations more than the early adopter. Based on these analysis results, this study briefly presented the improvements of the AI book recommendations and the basic direction of promotion and marketing strategies, and this is meaning of the study.
This study examines trends in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) research within the field of library and information science, both domestically and internationally. It analyzes scholarly papers published between 2005 and 2024 in the Korea Citation Index (KCI) and between 1995 and 2024 in the Web of Science (WoS) that contain the keywords virtual reality and augmented reality. A total of 76 papers from KCI and 1,014 papers from WoS were collected for analysis. The study investigates keyword frequency trends over time and applies network and centrality analyses to the titles, author keywords, and abstracts of the collected papers. Additionally, topic modeling was employed to identify key themes and trends within the VR and AR literature. The findings reveal that VR and AR research in library and information science has been expanding into diverse domains, with an increasing emphasis on educational applications. While early research primarily focused on technology development and user experience, recent studies have shifted toward exploring the application of varied content in educational and learning environments.
This study aims to examine data sharing, reuse, and citation practices in academic literature within the biological sciences, a field with a well-established tradition of data sharing. Data were sourced from Clarivate Analytics’ Data Citation Index (DCI) and the Web of Science (WoS). Semi-automatic text-searching techniques were used to identify terms and phrases related to data sharing, reuse, and citation, followed by an in-depth content analysis of full texts. The findings reveal that informal data citations (4.62%) are substantially more prevalent than formal data citations (95.38%) in biological science literature. Informal citations most frequently appear in the main text, followed by supplementary materials, references, acknowledgments, footnotes, and abstracts. Data reuse (47.8%) was observed to occur approximately twice as often as data sharing (22.1%) in academic literature. This prevalence of informal data citation suggests that data sharers often do not receive the same academic recognition as bibliographic authors. By analyzing data sharing, reuse, and citation practices in the full texts of academic literature, this study contributes valuable insights to the field of research data citation.
The goal of this study is to investigate foreign research trend on research data study. To achieve this goal, articles related research data topic were collected from WoS from 2000 to 2023. After data cleansing, author keywords were extracted from a total of 754 author keywords from 593 articles and keyword network analysis was performed. As a result of the analysis, first of all, it was understood that foreign research trends were activated compared to domestic research trends. Second, studies on research data were performed mainly in domain of Computer Science and Information Science. Third, studies related to research showed that keywords such as research data management, data repository, and Open data have the highest degree centrality. Through the results of this study, we were able to identify the foreign research trends on research data, and to compare with the domestic research trends.
Internet Information Resources are commonly utilized in the Academic Communication process. Securing the stability of Internet Information Resources is a critical factor in the efficiency of Academic Communication. In an effort to secure the stability of Internet Information Resources, this study conducts longitudinal studies to verify the stability of Internet Information Resources cited as references in the Academic Communication process. Furthermore, this study performs quantitative analysis on the accessibility of Internet Resources and qualitative analysis on the authenticity and uniformity of accessible resources. Quantitative analysis shows that accessibility decreased by 26.1% (2013 data set) - 27.4% (2019 data set) - in the initial 5 years since publication, 28.3% in the 5-10 years span, and 26.5% in the 10-15 years span. Qualitative analysis shows the percentage of citations found to be uniform with the initially cited resource 39.4% after five years of publication, 16.8% after 10 years, and 14.8% after 15 years. In both quantitative and qualitative analysis, we observe a decrease in stability over time. The researcher presents implications and suggestions for improving the stability of Internet Information Resources.
The purpose of this study is to propose a plan to revitalize digital-based reading education in school libraries by analyzing the reading education support platform of the Ministry of Education and the Office of Education for digital-based reading education in school libraries. Accordingly, the status of digital-based reading education infrastructure was investigated by targeting the Ministry of Education’s Dokseoro and the electronic libraries of 17 metropolitan and provincial Offices of Education, divided into pre-, middle-, and post-reading process support. Dokseoro supported a curation for pre-reading education and various media-based education of individual and group for middle- and post-reading education. However, there was no direct support for providing digital media for middle-reading education, and support centered on providing banners and links to Offices of Education electronic libraries in Dokseoro was investigated in 12 cities and provinces. In order to build various E-books and function as a subject gateway to support education, there were also cases of the Office of Education that provided abundant reading education for the entire reading process, such as categorizing and providing various open access information resources, but there was a quantitative gap in the situation of support due to the lack of the number of E-books or the Office of Education in which electronic library hasn’t been established. In addition, the qualitative gap in providing digital media, such as supporting only part of the reading processes or absence of integrated search function, was also found to be large. As a result, it was founded that homogeneous support at the level of the Ministry of Education was needed beyond the metropolitan and provincial Offices of Education in order for digital-based reading education in school libraries to take place without gaps.
