Abstract

The public library is the local centre and gateway of knowledge and information. Therefore, the library should be funded and operated by local government and the governing body will be responsible for matters of policy of the library. However, recently public libraries in Korea have faced enormous policy challenges such as the damage of its identity, outsourcing or contracting-out of management, and the general chaos of its administrative system. This paper aims to analyze the current level of infrastructure and policies of public libraries and to review the wrong path and the right path of library policies focused on establishing a library foundation and outsourcing library management in Seoul and Incheon.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between personality type and reading tendency in order to investigate the possibility of bibliotherapy based on different personality types. The study mainly focused on three aspects of personality types - converge type, emotional type, instinctual type - and student’s reading tendency. For this study, data was collected through surveys with 815 students in a K university located in Seoul Metropolitan area. The study revealed that the reading tendencies are different from three personality types. Based on the results of this study, new bibliotherapy programs according to various personality types are expected to be developed.

Abstract

Recently, the publishing community now recognizes the importance of metadata in customers’ buying decisions. As a result, they are more interested in effective metadata creation and quality maintenance, as well as standardization of exchanging system in the supply chain. As the library community also investigates the economic effectiveness of creating metadata, they try to find the best model for simplifying metadata creation by using sources close to the original. This study analyzes metadata work flow which had same source but be used in different fields by their own type and standard. It also discusses the same issues about each section and possibility about interoperation. Finally this paper tries to find an effective creation and distribution model of book metadata which can be used in domestic publishing and the library community.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate college students’ preferences of Web-based OPAC retrieval techniques and their ABO blood types as an empirical survey. Data was collected through a self-designed questionnaire with a total of 101 undergraduate students from the College of Social Sciences responding. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, and One-way ANOVA. The results show that ‘title’ was most preferred among the access points, ‘AND’ was the most preferred Boolean operator, ‘publication year’ and ‘subject’ were the most favored techniques in limiting the scope of retrieval, and ‘record number limit per page’ was the most frequently used for displaying retrieval results. The results also show that there were little(3 out of 22, i.e. 13.6%) statistically significant differences between the college students’ preferences of Web-based OPAC techniques and their blood type.

Abstract

As technology develops, U.S. state archives are using their websites to provide more and more information to state government agencies and the public, and more remote users are accessing and utilizing these websites. This study is the first to investigate how U.S. state archives collect information on their users and use of their archives and how they employ their websites to publicize these activities and their results for their own advocacy. Data was collected by examining and analyzing websites of all U.S. state archives, and the collected data was analyzed by content analysis and NVivo8 software. This study indicates that the websites of most state archives present little information on their users and usage of their archives and that U.S. state archive websites need to employ their websites for advocacy more effectively.

Abstract

This study investigated how college students seek and use information sources in their everyday lives. A total of 360 students from twelve colleges located in Seoul were randomly selected and participated in this study. The survey asked them what kind of information sources they use in their everyday life and what differences it has when they seek the information sources for their decision making time. Various criteria for evaluating information sources were reviewed to adopt in this study and collected data were analyzed using SPSS 17.0.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the tendency of open access income models in gratis open access journals and fee-based online journals in Korea. This study found that there was no clear difference between two groups and fee-based online journals had several of the same characteristics of open access journals. That is, the societies published fee-based journals have requested APC to authors and additional page charges for the articles with research funding. Also, in case of fee-based online journals, the journals received subsidies from external funding agencies were more than free OA journals. These findings show that fee-based online journals in Korea have a lot of capability to transition to open access journals.

Abstract

In this study, a new keyword extraction algorithm is applied to a single document with term clustering. A single document is divided by multiple passages, and two ways of calculating similarities between two terms are investigated; the first-order similarity and the second-order distributional similarity. In this experiment, the best cluster performance is achieved with a 50-term passage from the second-order distributional similarity. From the results of first experiment, the second-order distribution similarity was also applied to various keyword extraction methods using statistic information of terms. In the second experiment, (paragraph frequency) and (term frequency by inverse paragraph frequency) were found to improve the overall performance of keyword extraction. Therefore, it showed that the algorithm fulfills the necessary conditions which good keywords should have.

Abstract

The study investigated undergraduates’ citation use and plagiarism awareness. A questionnaire method was used and was given to undergraduates in a university located in Seoul. Upon investigation, undergraduates recognized the importance and the need of citation and were partly applying citations. However, upon further investigation of undergraduates’ citation learning with citation questions, very few of respondents had knowledge of correct citation usage. Undergraduates mostly cited print materials and information from the internet. They used books in case of print materials and web materials provided by academic institutions. They suggested that the university should teach citation usage through a citation and plagiarism awareness program. It is necessary for library use education (information literacy education) as well as university to teach citation education including citation type and how to write it.

Abstract

This study evaluates YALSA’s Competencies for Librarians Serving Youth: Young Adults Deserve the Best announced at the Young Adult Library Services Association(YALSA), a division of the American Library Association(ALA) on January 2010. For this study, we investigated fifth librarians working at the National Library of Korea to find out the requirements, effectiveness, and difficulties regarding seven areas and forth-eight detailed qualifica- tions indicated by YALSA’s Competencies for Librarians Serving Youth through survey. The results show that the more important areas required for youth services librarians were identified as knowledge of materials, administration, leadership and professionalism. Difficult areas of competencies are communication, marketing and outreach. Analysis of forty-eight detailed qualifications according to their importance and the level of difficulty shows that the more important areas are A4(encourage young adults to become lifelong library users by helping them to discover what libraries offer, how to use library resources, and how libraries can assist them in actualizing their overall growth and development) and A1(develop and demonstrate leadership skills in identifying the unique needs of young adults and advocating for service excellence, including equitable funding and staffing levels relative to those provided for adults and children), while the most difficult area of competencies is C4(Design, implement, and evaluate a strategic marketing plan for promoting young adult services in the library, schools, youth-serving agencies and the community at large).

Abstract

EBLIP seeks to improve library practice by utilizing the best available evidence in conjunction with a pragmatic perspective developed from working experiences in librarianship. The purpose of this study is to apply the evidence-based library and information practice(EBLIP) in Korean librarianship with encouraging the practitioners to publish in their workplace. Content analysis on papers accepted for publication among five LIS journals and focus group interview were performed in order to investigate the contexts and perceptions on the publishing activities of practicing librarians. While the proportion of papers that librarians wrote was calculated at 26 percent among the sample, the percentage of papers with librarians as a single author was only 9.2. Significant obstacles for librarians to publish papers due to organizational level were observed. The author suggests organizational support and better framework for communicating research based on practice such as publication of evidence-based practical journal and the adoption of structural abstract. The findings reinforce the importance of teaching rigorous research methods in workplace.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the current state of webzine publications in Korean university libraries. We assess the menu, composition and contents of various types of webzines at thirty six different Korean university libraries. Highlights of our survey include the following: 1) Most university libraries operate several different webzine sites. 2) Categories included in library webzines mainly include ‘Notices’, ‘Academic Database Information’, ‘Current Books’, ‘Recommended Reading’, ‘Utilization of Information’, ‘Book Review’, ‘Tips for Using the Library’, ‘Special Issues’, ‘Service Information’, ‘Quiz’, ‘Column’, ‘Special Events’. 3) Of these, the most popular categories were: ‘Notices’, ‘Service Information’, ‘Tips for Using the Library’, ‘Special Issues’, and ‘Recommended Reading’.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to improve curricula of the library and information science education as well as continuing education for children’s librarians. For this purpose, the study examined current curricula provided for children’s librarianship and continuing education programs. A questionnaire survey of the educational background of current children’s librarians was also conducted. Based on the results, this study proposed model curricula in the library and information science education and continuing education programs to train children’s librarians.
