Abstract

As new technologies change a society, librarians need to understand and adapt to technology innovations. However, most innovations that librarians are supposed to adopt are government-driven or top-down changes; and there have been very few studies conducted to identify any patterns or consistencies in librarians’ perceptions of innovation. This paper, therefore, has two research purposes. First, it introduces the Concern Based Adoption Model (CBAM) as one method to gain a deeper understanding of how librarians see such changes. Second, this study identifies school librarians’ concerns regarding digital textbooks in South Korea applying the CBAM theory. The test signifies that school librarians present a typical non-user profile, and the pattern anticipates a potential resistance to digital textbooks. Also, it discovers the less experienced and innovator librarians had higher concerns across every stage. The findings underscore a need of various interventions. The CBAM theory suggests, in terms of intense Stage 0 and 1, it is required for school librarians to have events to gain information about digital textbook implementation. Regarding targeted interventions, since the biggest gaps occurs in Stage 4, Consequence and Stage 5, Collaboration, according to school librarians’ experience and adoption style, new school librarians need stronger engagement with the community, which including associations, mentors or peer support, and collaborating with public libraries; innovator school librarians require opportunities to test and present their use of digital textbooks (Hall and Hord 1987).

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to measure self images of public librarians who should increasingly take charge of services for children and young people through the semantic differential method and analyze its’general characteristics. According to the results of analysis public librarians have been satisfied with their works and believed that they are kind, fair and gentle. One the other hand, they have had negative self images such as no influence, neglect, poor and stuffiness. Therefore, the result show that public librarians consider their ability, quality and activity as positive images, but they have felt lack of the social consensus and affirmative evaluation of their role. So, we can see building a good physical environment and running great programs to create access of children and young people to the public libraries, demonstrating leadership among senior librarians are so important in order to beat the stereotype and improve their positive self images of their evaluation and role. It is also necessary to promote the new value and role of public libraries and librarianship and to enable retraining for cultivating their qualities as a teacher.

Abstract

Scholarly monographs have been a main vehicle for knowledge representation and transfer as well as an important research outcome. University presses have long been considered as the last bastion for scholarly monographs that have low commercial prospect. Until now there has not been a systematic data analysis regarding scholarly monograph production by university presses in Korea. In this paper, we collected bibliographic records of university presses’ monograph publications between 1950 and 2015 using the National Library of Korea’s online catalog system. A total of 21,015 records were used in the analysis. In particular, for monographs published between 2001 and 2015, we categorized them into scholarly monographs and non-scholarly monographs. University presses’ publishing showed sharp increase during the 1990’s but is in decline after its peak in 2005. University presses seem to have engaged in publishing more non-scholarly monographs than scholarly monographs by a ratio of 6:4. Large university presses in size seem to produce higher proportions of scholarly monographs than smaller presses. In terms of authoring types, single authorship accounts for the highest proportion and on the increase. However, edited books are losing ground as translated books seem to hold steady. Monographs in social sciences have been published more frequently than any other subject areas as there seem to be significant discrepancies among subject areas in terms of the scholarly monograph proportion.

Abstract

This study has developed standard metadata for intangible cultural heritages based on multiple entity model. By analyzing “Preservation and Promotion of Intangible Cultural Heritage Act”, which was newly legislated in 2016, intangible cultural heritages archiving books, archival information resources and guidelines of organizations which conducted resources investigations, the transmission status of intangible cultural heritages, and the current status of intangible cultural heritage digital archiving and information services of related organizations, we obtained information lists required for intangible cultural heritages and took them into account in the process of selecting elements for intangible cultural heritage metadata. In addition, developing the intangible cultural heritage metadata based on the multiple entity model made it possible to provide comprehensive information by organically linking numerous sorts of information―with intangible cultural heritage information, which is the most essential, in the center, information on agents related to intangible cultural heritages, archival information resources information that they produce, and record management task information required to manage these archival information resources. By maintaining various relations of intangible cultural heritages and keeping the information up-to-date, the developed metadata is expected to provide rich contextual information on intangible cultural heritages in addition to the efficient management of information; and ultimately, make contribution to sustainably developing the value of intangible cultural heritages.

Abstract

This study proposed two topical relevance models, simple and complex models, using EEG/ERP techniques. In the simple model regarding simple search tasks, N300 and P3b components are used. The N300 is specific to the semantic processing of pictures and the P3b reflects mechanisms involved in the decision about whether an external stimulus matches or does not match an internal representation of a specific category. In the complex model regarding complex search tasks, on the other hand, N400 and P600 components are used. The N400 reflects activation of an amodel system that integrates both image-based and conceptual representations into a context, whereas the P600 is related to complex cognitive processes. Our research results can be used as a source to design an EEG-based interactive multimedia system.

This study analyzes circulation patterns of books with checkout transaction count by 11 subject areas, 5 positions, and 5 divisions with a Use Factor developed by Bonn in an Academic Library. 20% of the loan books occupies more than half of circulation and these are regarded as core collection. It proposes a ‘Loan books 20/50 rule’ that 20% core collection accounts for 50% of its circulation. It analyzes the proportion of core collection from the aspect of each subject area with a use factor, monthly change trend and loan period. It also defines ‘book usage’ considering checkout frequency of each title and loan period. Circulation patterns of core collection are compared and analyzed in terms of both checkout frequency and book usage. Core collection occupies about more than half of both total checkout transactions and total book usages and they all show a Power Law distribution.
