Abstract

Under rapidly changing circumstances, public libraries are required to evaluate the performance with an integrated point of view to cope with a variety of changes. In other words, it is necessary to develop integrated library performance appraisal indicators which are both quantitative and qualitative. Recently, ISO and IFLA attempt to adopt an integrated performance evaluation system based on the Balanced Scorecard(BSC). Therefore, this study defines four aspects of the library appraisal including input, process, output and outcome, and suggests a new library appraisal system and indicators of each appraisal aspect. In the concrete, appraisal aspects were derived from ISO appraisal system, and an appraisal system and indicators were presented based on the comparison and analysis of the ones respectively used inside and outside of Korea. Finally, this study proposes the method of suitability evaluation of those performance indicators by librarians and professors in Korea.

Abstract

This paper reports a case study in which Saracevic and Kantor’s derived taxonomy of library services was applied to qualitative data gathered from sixteen university library users. Using face-to-face interview method, we collected user responses related to the reasons of using services, aspects of interaction, and results of using services. Specific codes from the taxonomy were applied to the verbal expressions. The results show that library services are being used for a variety of purposes and that this approach enables us to effectively capture and classify service value expressed in users’ own words. The taxonomy is evaluated to be quite comprehensive and scalable.

This study interpreted film-creators' information behavior by reconstructing information behavior in the process of film-planning using human information behavior. Film creators exchange, collect, and analyze information through channels in the information environment so called “the small world.” After these processes, they strategically express this information by creating a film. This study concludes that the purpose of film-creating activity and that of everyday life information seeking are intertwined and that co-communication is the most important information channel and information source.
