이 글에서는 해방 직후 잔류 일본인이 한국전쟁 전/후 남한의 문화정치적구조에서 어떠한 굴절과 변용의 과정을 거쳐 기억되고 재현되는지 살펴보았다. 해방 이후 한반도 내 일본인은 미․소 점령군의 정책에 따라 약 1년에 걸쳐 송환되었다. 이 시기 잔류 일본인과 접촉․분리되었던 조선인의 경험은 실제 이들의 송환이 완료된 이후에야 본격적으로 구체화되어 재현되기 시작하였다. 식민의 잔여인 이들은 조선인들에게 ‘지금-여기’에서 공존하는 존재라기보다는, ‘기억’의 대상으로서 부재하는 자여야만 했던 것이다. 탈식민지화와 냉전질서의 구도 속에서 잔류 일본인에 대한 재현은 한편으로는 식민․해방의 경험을 어떻게 기억(/기념)할 것인가의 문제와 결부되어 있었으며, 다른 한편으로는 후식민의 상황에서 일본과의 관계를 어떤 방식으로 구축․상상할 것인가의 문제와 결부되어 있었다. 이 글에서는 기억․재현의 대상으로서 잔류 일본인이 ‘여성’으로 한정되어 있다는 점에 주목하여 식민 기억의 (재)구성을 둘러싼 젠더 정치의 함의를 살펴보았다. 특히, 잔류 일본인에 대한 기억이 한국전쟁 이후에는 공산주의 치하 일본인 여성의 수난사로 구성된다는 점에 주목하였다. 이를 통해 반일주의와 반공주의가 착종된 가운데 식민 기억의 (재)구성과 한․일 관계에 대한 상상이 이루어졌던 맥락을 살펴보았다.

Abstract
This article looks into how the memory/imagination of the remaining Japanese was distorted, acculturated, and restructured in the cultural and political structure before and after the Korean War. The remaining Japanese on the Korean peninsula had been returned during one year according to the policy of the US and Soviet Union occupation troops after liberation, and the Korean people were in contact with the Japanese during that one year. The experience of contacting and being separated from the remaining Japanese at that time began to be reproduced by being made clear after the completion of the actual return of the Japanese. The Japanese, who were a remainder of colonization, had to be those who were nonexistent as the object of a “memory” rather than to be an existence that coexists “now-here” to the Korean people. Such a phenomenon is, in part, combined with the matter of how to remember/commemorate the experience of colonization and liberation, and, in part, it is associated with the matter of which way the relationship with Japan should be constituted and imagined after the colonial situation. Focusing on that most of the remaining Japanese who were established as the object of that memory and reproduction were limited to “women”, this article considered the implications of gender policy surrounding the (re)structuring of a colonial memory. In particular, regarding narratives after the Korean War, they were composed of the ordeal history of Japanese women, centering on the “38 North Korea Japanese Camp”. With a focus on that, the article took a look into the context in which the (re)structuring of a colonial memory and imagination concerning the relationship between Korea and Japan was made while anti-Japanese ideology and anti-communism were entangled.
