Abstract

This article sought to explore the possibility of rethinking Jeju 4.3 beyond the limitations of victim-centered remembering discourse. The victim-centered remembering discourse, represented by the sentence “We won’t forget,” presupposes the division of Jeju/land, past/present, and so on, thus entrenching the separation of the parties/third parties and making it impossible for the two to form a solidarity at the fundamental level. Therefore, this article takes issue with such temporal and spatial divisions, and suggests that Jeju 4.3 be thought on a spatial level in a more comprehensive sense. When we consider place as a continuum of time-space that mutates, we can accept the division of time-space implied by the remembering discourse as provisional, not essential. The concept of “deplacement” was asked to imagine an alternative approach to historical issues, describing a place as an event that is not divided by geological boundaries, but rather an intersection of different temporal and spatial contexts or an encounter of heterogeneous bodies. In particular, this article noted how Jeju Island Women in Japan are portrayed in documentaries about Jeju 4.3. Some documentaries borrowing linear time structure have the problem of recreating the lives of these women through narrative of losing homeland and anchoring their identities to victimhood. In this case, by receiving diaspora’s memory from the standpoint of the majority who can identity themselves as nation, it can ultimately have the effect of naturalizing the concept of homeland or nation-state as an unchanging place. However, Im Heung-soon’s film Things That Do Us Part(2019) is an attempt to deal with Jeju 4.3 beyond the temporal and spatial division separating Jeju/Land, Korea/Japan, past/present, and us/them. The film reminds us that we cannot intuit the memories inherent in a particular place, but rather rely on the past-image to temporarily rebuild the historicality of the place. It also captures contemporary Korea as a place where heterogeneous body-image collide and diverge, and finds that each of us can be connected through the fluidity and uncertainty of us.
