서구 속의 동아시아 남성성 -영국에 거주하는 한국 남성 이민자들의 남성정체성 연구

Abstract

이 글의 목적은 동아시아 남성 이민자들이 어떻게 그들의 남성적 정체성과 민 족성을 서구 사회 속에서 이해하고 실천하는지 살펴보려는 것이다. 남성성은 단 일하게 고정된 것이 아니라 특정한 사회 경제적 문맥에 따라 다양하며, 끊임없이 변화하는 것이다. 지난 수십 년간 서구 사회에서 남성성에 대한 연구가 많은 진 보를 이루었음에도 불구하고, 동아시아 남성성에 대한 연구는 여전히 서구와 동 아시아 양쪽에서 모두 미개척 영역으로 남아 있다. 동아시아 남성들이 국내와 해 외에서 겪게 되는 상이한 남성성의 경험들은, 남성으로의 정체성이 타고나는 게 아니라 계급과 성 정체성, 그리고 민족성 등의 여러 조건들과 상호작용하면서 사 회적으로 형성된다는 것을 보여준다. 이는 또한 상징적, 물질적 성별 권력구조가 개인의 일상에 어떤 식으로 개입하는지 밝히는 중요한 단초가 될 것으로 보인다. 본 연구는 특히 영국에 살고 있는 한국 남성 이민자들의 경험에 초점을 맞추었 다. 이를 위해 심층 인터뷰가 수행되었으며, 매체연구를 통해 유럽과 북미의 미디 어에서 아시아 남성이 재현되는 방식과 그 영향에 대해 함께 다루었다.
