The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of preference books according to the children's personality types. For this study, the analytical criteria of preference books was made through literature review and investigated the contents of the borrowed books of 6th grade students collected from 3 elementary school libraries. This study found that the characteristics of preference books differ according to the children's personality types. Based on the results of this study, new reading education programs according to various personality types are expected to be developed.
This study aims to serve as the basis for the librarian training curriculum model for the disability services. To achieve this, a theoretical study was carried out through literature and investigated and analyzed on the disability services of Public Libraries in Seoul and on the status of Library and Information Science curriculum for the disability services in Korea. The research results are summarized as follows: First, only one university and one graduate school in Korea offers a curriculum for training librarians for the disability services. Second, since 2010 a continuing education program for librarians in charge of the disability service has been offered every year by the National Library of Korea, Librarians who completed this course have been surveyed for their opinions and the results have been reflected in the following course. Third, currently among the disabled users in public library the users with mental retardation, emotional and behavioral disorders, and autism are more than the visually impaired users. Most of the disability service has been a lending for general materials. According to telephone interviews, librarians who actively carry out the disability service need to understand the disability and, more information about operations and planning of cultural program for the disabled users.
Of the collection of public libraries in Korea, the literature collection is the largest, and Korean fictions, about 14% of the entire collection constitute the largest single subject. However, in the Korean Decimal Classification(KDC) Korean fiction is represented in one section, that is, 813 which corresponds to the only one of thousand divisions. More specifically, only two sub-sections, 813.6 and 813.7 are supposed to be assigned to the huge collection of modern Korean fiction, and, in reality, only 813.6 is being used in most libraries. Even with the use of book numbers, such disproportionate allocation of classification numbers would definitely lower the discriminative capacity of call numbers given to each item. It would also bring about difficulties in both shelving, on the libraries' side, and finding items from shelf, on the users' side. This study aims to examine the issues related to classifying Korean fictions in public libraries, including the composition of KDC schedules and the actual practice of classification, and then proposes the measures for improving the classification of Korean fictions.
Higher educational institutions face an increasing demand for developing a renewed set of competencies of college students who will live in the knowledge-based society. However, relatively little is known about what constitutes the core competencies that college students need to develop and how we can improve them. Nine categories of core competencies required for college graduates were drawn from the previous research and examples of core competencies developed by other institutions. They are analytic thinking skills, problem-solving skills, communicating skills, collaborative working skills, and etc. A reading guidance course for strengthening core competencies, developed based on the teaching and learning methods was adapted to students of LIS for one semester. Implications of these and related findings are discussed.
This study aimed to identify the entire lifecycle of research projects in science and technology. Specifically, it attempted to reveal major research steps and research activities from the beginning to the end of R&D projects. It also investigated information needs, source use and problems scientists encounter in each research step. In-depth interviews with 24 Korean scientists in the fields of bio- and nano-science and technology revealed five major steps of lifecycle, namely idea formation, seeking funding, experiment and analysis, output disseminations, and evaluation. We further identified specific information behaviors and salient communication and research tools in each step.
Article 29 in the copyright law of Korea, public performance and broadcasting for non-profit purposes will be revised. The copyright agency has tried to impose copyright fees on the use of cinematographic works such as DVDs in public libraries. The paper studied that the individual watching cinematographic works in public libraries is included in the concept of public performance in the copyright law. Also, the study conducted a survey on the situation of use of cinematographic works in public libraries. As a result of the study, watching DVDs in facilities for 1~3 persons in public libraries could be included in the concept of public performance. But the main purpose of most of DVD users was for circulation or reading. The library service for individual DVD watching will therefore not affect the commercial income of the copyright holders. Finally the study suggested that if the service for the individual watching of cinematographic works in libraries is included in the concept of public performance, the copyright law needs to be revised so that the service is included in the exception to the right of public performance.
The purposes of this study are to design and apply an experienced-based reading program using picture books for the struggling readers to improve their reading ability; and to analyze and verify how this program influences their self-esteem. The final objects of this study are 53 struggling readers who are 1-4th graders in 8 elementary schools. For this, the specific goals are set up as follows: First, an experience-based reading program using ADDIE teaching design model and Kolb’s experience learning cycle are planned and developed to improve reading abilities and self-esteem of the struggling readers. Second, it also aimed to clarify how the experience-based reading program using picture books influence the struggling readers’ self-esteem in affective ones. As a result, this experience-based reading program using picture books is effective on improving the struggling readers' self-esteem, generally. Although the degree of improvement is different from each of the subordinate factors, the overall scores of self-esteem are raised. This study suggests that an experience-based reading program using picture books is appropriate for improving the affective characteristics of the struggling readers. And it is also needed to produce a research manual to get the same test condition that prescribes the methods of pre-test and post-test.
This study aims to analyze and compare the structures of auxiliary tables regarding places - for example, Korea using several decimal classification systems such as DDC, UDC, KDC and NDC. For each auxiliary table, the codes were described in detail and the special characteristics were discussed. The common characteristics and the different aspects of different decimal classification systems were investigated as well as divisions of Korea in Korean Wikipedia and an administrative district classification system. This study suggests a new basic summary for the expansion of codes of Korea in auxiliary table in DDC with its principles and options and it will be useful for revising process of many decimal classification systems.
This study tried to analyze 11 standards and guidelines related to bookmobile service to provide the theoretical basis for establishing bookmobile standards or guidelines in Korea. In these standards and guidelines, there were 9 core elements about bookmobile service including administration, vehicle, staffing, collections, schedule & stops, services & programs, marketing & public relations, information & communication technology and safety, and each element had several related sub-elements. In conclusion, some suggestions were proposed to assist the establishment process of bookmobile standards or guidelines in Korea.
The purpose of this study is to assess the development, current states, and problems of MEDLIS document delivery service. With the analysis of MEDLIS transaction data from 2001 to 2011, we identified continuous usage decrease, unbalanced contribution by type of institution, high dependence on back issues, use differences among subfields of medicine, relatively low success rate, and various reasons for failure. Based on the results, recommendations for the maintenance of union catalog database, technical support for search capability enhancements, establishment of back issue archiving policy, user training and publicity, and membership expansion are suggested to promote the service.
Multimedia needs and searching have become important in everyday life, especially in a younger generation. The characteristics of multimedia needs and searching behaviors are distinctive compared to textual information needs and searching behaviors in a wide variety of ways. By interviewing and observing multimedia needs and searching behaviors of college students from 20 areas in Seoul, this study aims to improve the understanding on users' multimedia needs and how users search multimedia. The findings are presented in terms of searching sources, multimedia needs, relevance criteria and searching barriers. For multimedia, the searching sources are found primarily as Naver and Google and the distinguished features are presented depending on the individual multimedia types. As multimedia needs are categorized into generic, specific and abstract, most of the needs are classified as specific needs rather than generic needs, but there exist differences depending on the types of multimedia. In addition, the aspects of relevance criteria and searching barriers are reflected with the characteristics of individual multimedia types. The findings of this study demonstrate that distinctive indexing and searching environments depending on the types of multimedia might be necessary to improve the quality of multimedia searching.
This study aims to extract and analyze the bibliotherapeutic values/situations of Korean folk-tales for multi-cultural families in Korea. By analyzing 27 stories in the Korean folk-tale picture book written in two languages(Korean & English), we can find out 5 kinds of situational analysis as follows: (1) There are more men than women by the biological sex factor, whereas there are more adults than younger persons by the biological age discrimination. (2) For the space concept, there are a lot of socially related stories in their surroundings. (3) In the vertical relationship, there are more conflict elements than in the horizontal one. (4) There are more helpers from the outside than in the inside circle for the solution of their problems. (5) As a story theme, greed, wisdom, belief and family component elements are greatly involved in the stories. Among their beliefs, there are a lot of wisdom and greed themes, while piety and royalty to parents and conflict against stepmothers are among the family components. All of these would be an archetype of Korean culture, which can play an important role not only to understand Korean lifestyle for the multi-cultural families, but also to learn and practice bibliotherapeutic values.
The purpose of this study is to identify the problems of the distribution and maintenance of the KOLAS, and provide the developmental direction of the KOLAS. The research methods for this study are both survey and field interview. The results show that first, the National Library of Korea should continue to distribute the KOLAS to public libraries, and second, there are a lot of problems for maintenance of the KOLAS. However, some of the problems of KOLAS could be resolved, but not all of them. Thus, this study proposes the developmental plan of the KOLAS for future. The National Library of Korea should open the KOLAS to open source software for public, so that libraries and vendors may develop new ILS based upon the KOLAS.
