Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of juvenile books on Korea and Japan in WorldCat and observe the possibility of diffusing knowledge on each country. The distribution of bibliographic records of books published from 1993 through 2012, and especially the books published in 1997, when the numbers of books on both countries were the closest, were analyzed in detail in terms of language, genre, subject headings, and holding libraries. The result shows much fewer bibliographic records of juvenile books on Korea than those of books on Japan, and their growing gap every year. There were also much fewer holding libraries and copies of books on Korea, published in 1997, compared to books on Japan. The texts were mostly written in Korean and in tones set for very young readers. A serious lack of diversity in subjects and genres with the focus on Korean folklores and anecdotal biographies were also observed. Therefore, there seems to be nothing much interesting to read that would help promote the diffusion of knowledge on Korea through libraries around the world.

Abstract

The cognitive approaches on library and librarianship are being questioned. These are led from what the identity of the librarian is and from what the library is. This revealed that the perception of the library should not be acquired by interpreting its appearances but by interfering its nature. In conclusion, the information service is disclosed virtually as the essence of the library. On realizing the library virtually, even a person could be entitled as the library on the underlying assumption of information service (one-person-library).

Abstract

This study investigates how librarians view library user privacy. To this end, a four-part survey was conducted: respondents’ opinions about the privacy of library users, the degree to which library records violate the users’ privacy, the role libraries and librarians fulfill to ensure user privacy protection, and librarians’ need for privacy education. Results showed that librarians were very aware of privacy issues, but they perceived that library users’ privacy awareness was not high. In particular, they had little knowledge of what library records or which library tasks might have the potential to violate users’ privacy. In addition, awareness efforts of librarians to ensure user privacy was very low. On the other hand, the need for library user privacy educational programs was shown to be very high, and the willingness to participate was also relatively high.

Abstract

This study was to compare the description of content types(content forms) and media types of RDA and ISBD in order to revise GMD of KCR4. Test and survey were conducted as the research methods for comparing content types and media types description of RDA and ISBD. As a result, RDA content types description is better than ISBD in aspects of uniformity and correct rates. Especially, detailed list of content types in RDA could make the resources to be expressed completely, but content forms with adding the content qualification in ISBD could make the resource to be expressed with many errors. Therefore, there were some considerations to describe content types. First, content types terms in RDA need to be specified more. Second, some detailed rules need to be regulated on the combination of content qualification of ISBD. Third, the mapping tables between RDA content types and ISBD content forms need to be revised. Fourth, RDA content types list will be more applicable in KCR4 based on the uniformity and correct rates in the test. This study will contribute to analyze and suggest RDA and ISBD terms list of content types and media types for KCR4.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a job-stress scale for librarians who work in university libraries. The study was first conducted by analyzing existing representative job-stress scales that are used domestically and internationally. To understand the characteristic of particular job stress that academic librarians have, the in-depth interview among qualitative research methods was selected, and 15 librarians who work at a 4-year system university libraries participated in this study. Based on the results of the questionnaire survey, the reliability and validity were verified. To analyze the validity, exploratory factor analysis was carried out. To extract factors, principal component analysis was used. To extract factors, principal component analysis was used. For the rotation method, a varimax rotation was applied. A tertiary measurement tool with a total of 46 questions for 11 factors was developed after removing measurement questions that were rejected as a result of the analysis. As a result of factor analysis on the tertiary measurement tool, 11 factors were extracted. Those 11 factors include ‘peer relation conflict factor(factor 1)’, ‘superior-subordinate relation conflict factor (factor 2)’, ‘work compensation evaluation factor(factor 3)’, ‘emotional labor factor(factor 4)’, ‘physical environmental factor(factor 5)’, ‘employment stability(factor 6)’, ‘job demand factor(psychological) (factor 7)’, ‘decision-making and responsibility factor(factor 8)’, ‘work complexity factor(factor 9)’, ‘work boundary conflict factor(factor 10)’, and ‘job demand factor(physical)(factor 11)’.

Abstract

Although it is about a decade since public libraries started to provide digital information services, lack of expertise for efficient service operation and restrictions related to copyrights have led to failure to obtain remarkable performances in uses. This study intends to analyze operation cases of domestic and overseas collaborative digital information services, as well as the current status of digital information services of libraries in Gyeonggido, thereby developing a collaborative digital information service model among public libraries on the level of local governments. This research then analyzed collaborative digital information service Web sites and surveys. Based on the analysis result, this study presented support of integrated search of possessed electronic information, Web database (DB), DB on original texts of regional records, online reference services, and mobile platforms as functional factors to embody a successful service model. As a system management road map, an eclectic model combining the merits of centralized and decentralized models was found to be more effective than a centralized or decentralized model in consideration of the characteristics of participating organizations.

Abstract

Jeongsa-gongshin-nokgwon (定社功臣錄券) is a document issued during the reign of King Taejong. The king appointed the vassals of merit who suppressed the First Rebel of Prince in 1398 as Jeongsa-gongshin (定社功臣) and gave them titles and rewards as described in the Jeongsa-gongshin-nokgwon document. This study explores the reasons and process of the rewards given to the vassals by way of the existing copy of Jeongsa-gongshin-nokgwon. The form and organization of the document were analyzed in detail. The titles given to the vassals were classified into each grade and their characteristics were sought. The content of the document was also analyzed in detail. The result of the study suggested the following. Jeongsa-gongshin-nokgwon is a manuscript and it consists of 3 parts: introduction (卷首), main text (本文), and ending (卷末). Names and titles given to 29 vassals of merit are listed of which 12 vassals were first grade and 17 vassals were second grade. The ranks of first-grade vassals of merit were higher than the ranks of second-grade vassals of merit. In the first-grade vassals of merit, there were relatively more relatives of the king. The rewards and privileges given to them were different, depending on their grade. The content of regulation was also different within the same grade, depending on the person. The formation and names of government officers, who worked in the temporary office in charge of rewards to the vassals of merit (Gongshin-dogam, 功臣都監), were verified by the approval signatures and last names found in Jeongsa-gongshin-nokgwon.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze data management policies offered by 15 government funding agencies in the U.S., UK, Canada, and Australia, and to make recommendations for developing data management policies in Korea. For the analysis of data management policies, five criteria were suggested based on literature review as follows: 1) the definition of research data, 2) principles of data management, 3) data management plan, 4) the implementation of data management, 5) legal and ethical issues. It was found that there was no policy that covers all the criteria for the analysis. Several funding agencies, however, commonly dealt with each criteria in their data management policies. Based on the findings from the analysis, this study made the following suggestions: First, data policies provide definitions and types of research data based on the understanding of data creation in the fields of funding interests. Second, data policies include principles of data management applicable to data practices in Korea. Third, data policies implement data management plans to promote responsibility of researchers for managing data. Fourth, data policies specify data management implementations to facilitate and support data sharing practices. Fifth, data policies should minimize legal and ethical challenges in data sharing through the review of the applicability of related laws and regulations and their improvement.

Abstract

We proposed and evaluated a tag semantic analysis method in which original tags are expanded and the semantic relations between original or expanded tags are used to extract key sentences from lecture speech transcripts. To do that, we first investigated how useful Flickr tag clusters and WordNet synonyms are for expanding tags and for detecting the semantic relations between tags. Then, to evaluate our proposed method, we compared it with a latent semantic analysis (LSA) method. As a result, we found that Flick tag clusters are more effective than WordNet synonyms and that the F measure mean (0.27) of the tag semantic analysis method is higher than that of LSA method (0.22).
