『구운몽』에 나타난 여성 우정의 양상과 그 의미

초록
이 글은 김만중의 『구운몽』에 형상화된 여성 우정의 양상과 의미를 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. 『구운몽』에는 다수의 여성 인물이 등장함에도 불구하고 이들 간의 관계에 주목한 연구는 비교적 많이 이루어지지 않았다. 양소유가 여러 뛰어난 여성을 아내로 맞이한다는 기존의 서사는, 여성들의 친밀한 관계에 초점을 맞출 경우 새롭게 해석될 가능성이 열린다. 『구운몽』의 여성 우정은 친구와의 일대일 우정을 위해 같은 남자와의 결혼을 선택하는 양상과, 결혼을 통해 그러한 우정을 일대다의 관계로 확장시켜 여성들의 공동체를 형성하는 양상으로 나뉜다. 중세 시대에 여승이나 수녀 등의 여성 공동체가 가부장적인 사회의 대안 공간 혹은 대항공간으로 기능했음을 고려한다면, 『구운몽』 속 일부다처제는 남성 중심의 질서를 넘어서 여성들이 우정을 이어나가는 헤테로토피아로서의 의미까지 갖는다고 볼 수 있다. 그렇다고 해서 이 소설에 남성의 욕망이 깃들어 있음을 완전히 부인하기는 어렵다. 하지만 여성들 사이의 우정을 중심으로 텍스트를 읽어나갈 경우 해방적인 의미가 충분히 발견될 것이다.

Abstract
This study clarifies the aspect and meaning of female friendship embodied in Kim Manjung’s Guunmong. Even though there are several female characters in Guunmong, relatively few studies have been conducted on relationship among them. If we focus on the intimate relationships of women, the traditional interpretation of Guunmong in which Yang So-yu marries several outstanding women, can be read anew. The female friendship depicted in Guunmong is divided into two aspects: choosing to marry the same man for a one-to-one friendship, and forming a female community by expanding such friendships to a one-tomany relationship through marriage. In the Middle Ages, the female community, such as nuns, functioned as an alternative space or counter space to a patriarchal society. Keeping this in mind, polygamy in Guunmong can also be interpreted as a heterotopia for women’s friendship, not just as a male-centered order. Of course, it is difficult to deny that male desires are embedded in Guunmong. However, if the text is read from a female friendship perspective, its emancipatory meaning can be discovered.
