소설 『작은 아씨들』(Little Women)의 번역 양상 — 여성 지칭어를 중심으로

초록
국내 출판시장에서 문학번역이 차지하는 비중은 압도적이다. 더욱이, 문학번역의 특성상 번역가의 번역에 따라서 독자의 입장에서는 전혀 다른 번역이 될 수 있다. 이 때문에, 변화하는 사회상에 발맞추어 번역 역시 재작업이 꾸준히 이루어져야 한다. 이러한 점을 고려하여 특정 작품에 대한 다양한 분석이 필요하다고 보임에 따라, 본 연구에서는 Louisa May Alcott의 소설 『작은 아씨들』의 여성 지칭어와 관련된 표현이 어떤 식으로 번역되었는지 살펴보고자 시중에 출판되어 있는 3종의 번역본을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 일부 번역에서 지나치게 여성성(性)이 드러남을 확인하였다. 물론, 원문과 비교해 보았을 때 여성성이 드러나는 번역이 오역이라고는 볼 수 없지만 대체할 수 있는 더 나은 표현이 있다면 번역본에서 뚜렷하게 드러나는 여성성에 대하여 문제 제기가 필요하다고 보았다. 사회가 변화하는 만큼 언어 역시 계속 변화하고 있다. 이 때문에, 끊임없이 다양한 번역본이 등장하는 문학번역 역시 사회를 반영하는 가장 중요한 장치 중 하나이므로 번역가는 변화하는 사회상을 잘 반영해야 한다.

Abstract
An overwhelming amount of translated literature has been published, and novels constitute the majority of translated literature. Indeed, the number of translations of certain works is gradually increasing, and in this context, considering readers is controversial. A literary work can be translated completed differently for readers according to each translator’s approach. Additionally, it is sometimes necessary to rework translations in response to changing social conditions. Taking this into account, it is necessary to conduct various analyses of a single work. Accordingly, this study analyzes three published translations of Louisa May Alcott’s novel Little Women. The study aims to examine how these feminist translations of the novel were produced. The study found that femininity was excessively emphasized in some translations. Of course, translations that feature femininity more strongly than the original text cannot be said to be mistranslations. However, in cases where more appropriate expressions may have been available, it is necessary to question the clear emphasis on femininity in the translation. Language continually changes alongside society. Everchanging and diverse literary translations serve the important function of reflecting society. Therefore, translators should properly reflect changing social conditions in their translations.
