Abstract

This study explores the possibility of creating a genealogy of women’s narratives centered on mother–daughter relationships during the Korean War. It examines the elements of the master plot of Korean War-era women’s narratives centered on mother— daughter relationships, with a focus on Park Wan-seo’s The Naked Tree while also exploring its relationship with Hwang Jeong-eun’s The Every Year as an extension of the master plot that grounds Park Wan-seo’s narrative. In this way, this essay highlights the (re)testimonial nature of each narrative and examines the re-testimonial nature of the work of continuing women’s narrative. This study is significant for examining the continuity of modern and contemporary women’s narratives and reflecting on the oral nature of women’s narrative forms. On this basis, this study examines the possibility of creating a genealogy of women’s narratives. It also illustrates that reading and giving meaning to texts from an oral /life history perspective is a valid methodology for creating a genealogy of women’s narratives.
