Abstract

In this study, examined are the characteristics of ‘One Book, One City’ reading campaigns conducted in Seattle, Chicago, and ‘The Big Read’, a nationwide ‘One Book’ campaign, supported by the NEA, in the U.S.A. and Seoul and Cheongju in Korea. Some differences as well as similarities were found in the goal setting, selection of books, strategies for reading and discussion, and programs of these ‘One Book’ reading campaigns. While, as a mass reading event, ‘One Book’ reading campaigns in various communities share the goal of promoting literacy and communication through reading and discussion, each ‘One Book’ campaign seems to show uniqueness in the criteria of book selection, reading and discussion guides, and the activities and programs, which make up cultural contents.

The FRBR model supplies more suitable bibliographic framework of audio-visual material which has a sufficient hierarchical relations and relative bibliographical records. The followings are research methods designed by this study;(1) The experimental metadata system named it FbCS based on FRBR was developed by using the entity-related database and composed of multi-layed and hierarchy. FbCS is developed through benchmarking of a case study for iMMix model in Netherlands based on FRBR.(2) To evaluate effectiveness of retrieval and usability of FbCS, this study made a experiment and survey by user groups of professionals.

Abstract

Transaction logs capture the interactions between online information retrieval systems and the users. Given the nature of the Web and Web users, transaction logs appear to be a reasonable and relevant method to collect and investigate information searching behaviors from a large number of Web users. Based on a series of research studies that analyzed Naver transaction logs, this study examines how transaction log analysis can be applied and contributed to the field of web searching and suggests future implications for the web searching field. It is expected that this study could contribute to the development and implementation of more effective Web search systems and services.

Abstract

In this study, the intellectual structure of Records Management & Archival Science in Korea was analyzed using document clustering, a widely used method of text mining, and document similarity network analysis. The data used in this study were 145 articles written on the subject of Records Management & Archival Science selected from five major representative journals in the field of Library & Information Science in Korea, published from 2001 to 2006. The results of cluster analysis show that the core subject areas are “electronic records management and digital preservation,” “records management policy and institution,” “records description and catalogues,” and “records management domain and education.” The results of document analysis, which is more detailed than cluster analysis, show that “digital archiving,” a specialized subject in digital preservation, plays a central role. The results of serial analysis, which proceeds according to a timeline, show the emergence of “archival services” as a new subject area.

Abstract

The most remarkable business model to have merged in electronic publishing is the so-called ‘Big Deal’. Major publishers have begun offering libraries bundled packages that are across journals and across print and electronic versions. This paper examined consortium conditions of scholarly journals in the light of big deal. The result showed that various pricing models have been appeared and freedoms to choose collections have been on the increase in comparison with the past. But many major publishers have adopted a typical big deal contract condition that a library enters into a long-term arrangement to get access to large electronic journal collections at a dramatic discount interchange of a promise not to cut print subscriptions. The publishing and library communities need to find alternative pricing models that provide better deals for those disadvantaged by the prevalence of the big deal. Much in the world of scholarly publication is changing, combination of traditional publishing and open access publishing may well be gained public favor in the future.

Abstract

As a new practical model of Korean Library statistics, It suggests 6 parts, fifty-four items for 4 types of libraries. In comparison with last version, ‘library use and users’, ‘electronic services’ parts are increased which are occupied as more than half of the whole statistical items. Budget parts are increased also. The new model which is developed based on the international standards like ISO2789 and NISO/ANSI Z39.7 is advised by professionals in the fields.
