As the improvement of digital technologies increases the use of images from various fields, the domain of image retrieval has evolved and become a growing topic of research in the Library and Information Science field. The purpose of this study is to identify the knowledge structure of the image retrieval domain by using the author co-citation analysis and author bibliographic coupling as analytical tools in order to understand the domain’s past and present. The data set for this study is 245 articles with 8,031 cited articles in the field of image retrieval from 1998 to 2013, from the Web of Science citation database. According to the results of author co-citation analysis for the past of the image retrieval domain, our findings demonstrate that the intellectual structure of image retrieval in the LIS field consists of predominantly user-oriented approaches, but also includes some areas influenced by the CBIR area. More specifically, the user-oriented approach contains six specific areas which include image needs, information seeking, image needs and search behavior, image indexing and access, indexing of image collection, and web image search. On the other hand, for CBIR approaches, it contains feature-based image indexing, shape-based indexing, and IR & CBIR. The recent trends of image retrieval based on the results from author bibliographic coupling analysis show that the domain is expanding to emerging areas of medical images, multimedia, ontology- and tag-based indexing which thus reflects a new paradigm of information environment.
In Korean Studies, there have been made many studies for finding the identity as the intrinsic academic field, because the Korean studies have complex intertwined characteristics with other fields. However, previous related studies have been mostly focused on the qualitative content analysis method related to the major Korean Studies, the study applying the bibliometric method was not conducted. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to draw intellectual structures about the domestic and overseas Korean studies academic papers applying the bibliometric methods, and to analyze content of intellectual structures by focus group interview (FGI). As the result of this study, the intellectual structure in the domestic Korean Studies had the characteristics of the Humanities, and the intellectual structure in the foreign Korean Studies had the characteristics of the Social Sciences. Also, the domestic Korean Studies encompassed a wide range of period from ancient to modern times, while the foreign Korean Studies focused on a modern and contemporary times. This study has a significance in the way that it is the first study to draw the intellectual structures in the domestic and foreign Korean Studies applying the bibliometric method, and then to carry out the comprehensive analysis through FGI with specialists in Korean Studies. However, in order to do more meaningful one-to-one comparison studies about the field of the domestic and foreign Korean Studies, many follow-up co-studies reflecting diverse opinions of many researchers in Korean Studies will be necessary.
Today, many learned societies are very interested in publishing international journal, especially for titles from non-English speaking countries. In Korea, there is not many studies on publishing international journals except for some cases trying to internationalize domestic journals. This study analyzed international factors of domestic 143 titles offering DOI by KoreaScience. The analysis showed that many of these journals have low impact factors and editorial board without a lot of foreign scholars. Some titles don’t have online submission platform or English websites. It is recommended that domestic journals should reinforce international factors including global distribution with visibility to be considered as reputable international journals.
The subject heading is an elaborate access tool for subject browsing and searching in information retrieval environment. The purpose of this study is to suggest the applicable facets to subject headings in Korea. First, the concepts of subject and the definitions of facets were investigated in the literature review. Second, six cases including OCLC's FAST, PRECIS, 『Thesaurus construction and use』, CC 7th edition, BC 2nd Edition, and UDC 3rd Edition were analyzed to focus on configuration of facets as case studies. Based on the results, twenty-two facets were proposed including Topical, Event, Geography, Chronology, Personal and Corporate Name, Title, Form, Genre, Language, and Person facets as 11 top facets. Also, Topical-Thing/Entity and Topical-Action/Status, Part, Kind, Property, Whole, Material, Patient, Product, By-Product and Agent facets as sub-facets of Topical facet.
This study was to suggest the creation of hybrid bibliographic records in complicated bibliographic environment applying both AACR2 and RDA for uniform display and correct search. The literature reviews and case studies were used as the research methods. In case studies, Kent State University, University of Houston as the libraries, and Backstage Library Works as algorithm converting to hybrid records were surveyed. For creating the hybrid records, it was needed to differentiate hybrid records and born RDA records, to keep the data that appeared in 250 tag without spelling out edition data, to maintain 260 tag instead of converting 260 tag to 264 tag, and last to design mapping table for converting GMD to CMC. This study would suggest uniform display and search through hybridization of bibliographic records of foreign resources.
The purpose of this study is to review the current status of disseminating knowledge on Korean people by analyzing biographies for juvenile and general audiences with the subject term ‘Korea’ in WorldCat. Languages and topics of 15,007 bibliographic records and topic facets, biographees, and holding libraries in the U.S. of 487 biographies for juvenile audiences were analyzed. Major findings are as follows: 1) 30 English biographies are held by may libraries in the U.S. and the most popular subjects are Kim Il-song and Kim Jong-il, 2) 457 Korean biographies are not held by many libraries, and King Sejong and the General Yi Sun-sin are the most popular subjects, 3) many Korean biographies are picture books for the very young readers with the focus on Korean folklores and anecdotal biographies, and 4) there are some errors in topic facets, dispersion of biographees, and inaccurate holding lists of bibliographic records. Therefore, there seems to be little to read with an interest and promote the diffusion of knowledge on Korean people through libraries.
Bibliometric analysis for research performance evaluation can generate erroneous assessments for various reasons. Application of the same evaluation metric to different domains, for instance, can produce unfair evaluation results, while analysis based on incomplete data can lead to incorrect conclusions. This study examines bibliometric data of library and information science (LIS) research in Korea to investigate whether research performance should be evaluated in a uniform manner in multi-disciplinary fields such as LIS and how data incompleteness can affect the bibliometric assessment outcomes. The initial analysis of our study data, which consisted of 4,350 citations to 1,986 domestic papers published between 2001 and 2010 by 163 LIS faculty members in Korea, showed an anomalous citation pattern caused by data incompleteness, which was addressed via data projection based on past citation trends. The subsequent analysis of augmented study data revealed ample evidence of bibliometric pattern differences across subject areas. In addition to highlighting the need for a subject-specific assessment of research performance, the study demonstrated the importance of rigorous analysis and careful interpretation of bibliometric data by identifying and compensating for deficiencies in the data source, examining per capita as well as overall statistics, and considering various facets of research in order to interpret what the numbers reflect rather than merely taking them at face value as quantitative measures of research performance.
This study analyzed the contracts for library remuneration, amount of the remuneration, average amount of the remuneration in relation to kinds of libraries, distribution of the remuneration, and types and publication year of the works to be collected remuneration based on the data during 2004~2014 from the KORRA. As results, current library remuneration system has limitations for libraries to digitize and transmit to the public their collections, Also, there are some limitations to the protection for copyright holders because the amount of the remuneration collected from libraries has declined and non distribution remuneration has been so high. This study suggested that the library remuneration system needs to be revised considering the scope of library materials to be digitized and predicted frequency of use. Also, the better practical solution to protect copyright holders is not a raise of the library remuneration but the efficient use of the non distribution remuneration.
The Fixed book price policy, a portion of publication and printing promotion act applied from February 2003 in the South Korea, is a system of fixed book prices that administered by a government body. The publishing industries had been attempted to lower the discount rate and to extend the application scope. The amendment for the attempts was passed in April 2014, and implemented from November 2014. From the library point of view, this amendment caused a reduction of buying library materials. For this reason, the agenda about expansion of material budget in libraries has been recognized as the alternative. The purpose of this study is to analyze the stance and role of libraries as actors in the policy process. Based on this, this study also attempt to identify usefulness and improvement point of Policy Network Model. For this purpose, this study identifies actor's internal characteristics as an improvement point that previous studies did not identified.

In recent years, countries such as USA, United Kingdom and Australia have begun to implement national policies in order to systematically manage and share research data produced through publicly funded research. However, Korea as of yet does not have a coordinated research data policy. The lack of infrastructure that supports the sharing and preserving research data results in the poor management and loss of valuable data produced from significant national R&D investments. The need for research data collection, management and sharing goes beyond the outcome assessment of national research: it facilitates the diffusion of research impact and economic development. There is a growing recognition that data sharing is an essential element of research ethics. This research investigates the relevant research data policies and methods of governance at the national level using a case study analysis. United Kingdom was selected as a case study target as it shows a wide variety of policy examples and instruments. In particular, this research focuses on the UK’s national legal framework for research data sharing, analyzes the RCUK (Research Councils UK)’s data policies, activities at the seven research councils under RCUK as well as several supporting institutions. Based on the analyses, this research offers a national roadmap for better managing and sharing of research data in Korea.
The realistic guidelines of the library service for the disabled should be made in the circumstance of the growing importance of the library service for the disabled. Therefore, this study intended to draw implications through investigation of guidelines of the library service for the disabled on domestic and foreign libraries. As the results of those investigation, this research found that the legal standard and related guidelines should be amended urgently according to the current status of related library situation. The first Issue that was derived in this study is to separate consideration of the minimum standards and the detailed criteria of library service for the disabled. Secondly, the guidelines of the library service for the disabled should be linked statistics and evaluation index of government in order to be applied to the library spot realistically. To do so, this research suggested that opinions of the library for the disabled and the disabled users should be reflected through listening and communications.
Question taxonomy is one of main approaches to understand the questioner’s information need so that we can assign relevant answerers to the question submitted by the user. The goal of this study is to investigate question taxonomy of question and answering services, which are available online and in libraries and understand the characteristics of question answering services by type. In order to achieve the goal, this study examines the types of questions appeared in literature, specifically focusing on social reference, question answering systems, and reference services, and then provides a summary of question taxonomy found in question answering services.
