Kuanki and Sampae in the early 20th century

Abstract

The Terminology the Kisaeng use to describe the female performers who play music and dance and prostitute. However the image of Kisaeng is different in every period, social situation, and etc. In this paper, I described two types of Kisang, Kuanki and Sampae from 1894 to 1916. There were 3 types of female performer in Choseon Dynasty. In the first 20 years in the 20th century two type of them alived. Actually this two type female performaer system was made by both Choseon and Japan. This system disappeared by Sampae's performing in theatre and Japanese new law.
