Gendering of translated test and women’s modernity -Focused on Shin yeosung-New age women-

Abstract

This article with an aims to consider from the gender perspective the characteristics & strategy of foreign translation that can be found in the media <Shin yeosung-New age women> to determine the modernity of those translations published in <Shin yeosung> in 1920s & 1930s and analyzed that it was a certain strategic point to have given an influence in solidifying the criteria of identity of modern women specifically new generation women. This article identified gender characteristics appeared in the Hanguel translation text of its beginning and the translated text of its target language is to be determined and named this process as gendering in this translation study. This article examined what was the modern knowledge argument that was attempted for modernity then Korean women by the translated text of <Shin yeosung> based on style, genre & content,of the subject of translation, finally focused on the strategy appeared in such text, and how the merits and demerits can be evaluated from the perspective of feminist. From the feminist view point, the translation of <Shin yeosung>performed positive role in developing modernity to female gender but at the same time, indicated biased characteristics of gender as they were selected by male gender thus it also was a text of criticism and resistance that contains the limitation of the existence of the modern discipline and patriarchal order.
