현실의 초월, 초월의 현실성 : 신경숙 「기차는 7시에 떠나네」와 은희경 「마지막 춤은 나와 함께」에 대한 검토

신경숙 소설들의 특징을 '공동체적 관계의 회복 혹은 집의 재건과 따스함의 분위기'로 요약할 수 있다면, 은희경 소설들의 특징은, '삶의 이면에 대한 가차없는 시선과 냉소적 태도'로 요약할 수 있을 것이다. 표면적으로만 본다면, 전자가 '따스한 관계'의 가능성을 역설하는 반면 후자는 그러한 관계의 실현 불가능성을 역설하고 있다. 그러나 일견 서로 상반된 것을 추구하는 것처럼 보이는 신경숙과 은희경을 소설은 삶의 단자화가 극단으로 치닫고 있는 우리 시대에 '과연 타인과의 만남은 가능한가?' '그러한 경험은 지속될 수 있는가?'라는 질문으로부터 출발하고 있다. 다시 말하자면, 그들의 소설은 '지속성을 체험하려는 열망'을 드러내고 있다. 그들은 그러한 열망을 작품 속에서 실현시키기 위한 매개로 구체적인 감각, 특히 몸의 감각을 사용한다. 그 까닭은 그들이 구체적인 몸의 감각을 통해서만 지속성을 경험할 수 있다고 믿기 때문이다. 그들은 공통적으로 따뜻한 피가 흐르는 몸의 만남, 그리고 그 만남의 기억만이 우리를 살게 하며, 우리로 하여금 시간의 침식 작용에 저항할 수 있게 한다고 말한다. 여기서 문제는 몸과 몸의 만남, 온기의 전달 가능성, 섹스라는 구체적 감각을 통해 지속성을 체험하려는 그들의 열망이, 그 구체성에 머물러 있지 않고 보편적인 만남의 가능성으로 초월한다는 데 있다. 이렇게 해서 그들은 현실의 시름을 잠시 잊게 하는 '환상의 공간'을 불러들이게 된다. 신경숙의 소설에서 환상의 구성물이 인간 존재가 지닌 온기 즉 체온이라면, 은희경의 소설에서는 낭만을 걷어낸 사랑 즉 섹스이다. 지속성을 체험하려는 열망으로 인해 환상을 불러들이는 이러한 태도는 생에 대한 지극히 낭만적 태도이다. 그런데 몸의 기억만으로 만남의 지속성을 체험하고 유지하려는 태도는 삶에 대한 소극적 방어일 수 있다. 또한 두 작품 속에서 그 열망은 그 자체로서 생산적인 힘이 되지 못하고 결핍 혹은 상실의 형태로만 유지되고 있으며, 충족이 끝없이 지연되는 방식에 의해서만 그 열망이 증폭되고 있다. 물론 이것이 90년대 현실 속에서 실현 가능했던 지속성 체험의 방법일 수 있다. 그러나 정치 혹은 현실에 대한 정면 승부를 회피하고, 그 투쟁을 문학 내부로 끌어들일 때, 그러한 문학은 오히려 현실 정치를 내면화함으로써, 현실 자체를 승인하는 결과를 초래하게 된다. 그러한 문학은 궁극적으로 현실 보수화에 기여하게 되는 것이다. 신경숙과 은희경 소설에 드러나 있는 지속성을 체험하려는 열망은 현실과 정밀하게 만나지 못할 때, 현실을 바라보는 그들의 낭만적 태도로 인해 헛된 꿈이거나 망상이 되기 쉽다.

Abstract
Generally, Critics say that the perspective of 'the meeting with unrelated people' could be actualized in Shin Kyung-Sooks novels but it could not be in Un Hee-Kyungs those. At a glance, it seems that there is a opposed view of the world between Shin Kyung-Sooks and Un Hee-Kyungs novels. But both of them have the similar understanding of the 1990s reality and are based on 'romantic view point of the reality'. They have a same question such as 'how to meet with unrelated people' and 'how to retain such experience' in the world in which our life extremely has been fragmented. In other word, Shin and Un have expressed the desire of 'the meeting with unrelated people' and 'endurance of the experience'. They use the special techniques, which are 'making the fantastic space' and 'using the perception of body', in order to realize their desire in their novels. The component of the fantastic space means the temperature of the body in Shin's novels and does sex in Un's those. The reason why they use these techniques is that they comprehend the reality through the romantic viewpoint. These techniques are the solution that two of these novelist finally have accepted to meet reality. However, if novelists never concerned about politics or reality but only literature, it will cause to accept the problem of reality itself. The literature written by novelist such like that helps to conserve the problem of reality. Sometimes, the desire and romantic viewpoint of the reality, expressed by Shin and Un, may become illusion.
